To me it sounds like he is implying that Microsoft will only sell the Xbox 360 for another year and if thats the case yeah they might sell more in Microsoft's 360 life cycle but not in PS3's life cycle. He also points out that maybe Microsoft just told on themselves and will stop selling Xbox 360's soon and bring out a new console in 2010. I really think the 360 is toward the end of its life cycle. Especially after hearing them make statements like that.

PS3 will have a larger install base by the end of next year. I doubt Microsoft Gaming Studios will bring the next xbox next year because 1. They are too confident right now with the 360 2. They always touted about lowering the 360 to $200. It will take them more than a year to get to that price point.

And it's gonna be interesting to see what happens when the next xbox comes out.

By then PS3 will have the court for a while attracting new games with large customer base while new xbox will have the most gorgeous games. It comes down to the customer if it's worth another purchase to get the latest thing. And it comes down to Microsoft on how much they dare spend $$$ to push the new games to attract new customers.

Very interesting to see what happens.

Xbox 360 is selling more then xbox was last gen. But ps3 is selling just as well as ps2 last gen. There's no reason ps3 won't smash the 100 million sold mark again. Especially when it hits a good price, because the things ps3 can do smash the competition. People already realise that because even though ps3 has always been more expensive then 360, it outsells it continously. Hirai stated a while ago, they have a target of 150 million total ps3's sold. They seem confident enough. I somehow doubt 360 will get to the 100 million mark, i severely doubt that

remember the E3 '05 press conference from microsoft? J. Allard and Peter Moore said (at that conference)360 will have 1 billion gamers on live during 360s lifetime. that's more outrageous. one billion? i saw geoff keighly, morgan webb,adam sessler making fun of ms for that.
and i do think that's way more outrageous than hirais' commments. although kaz should have considered the 150 mil. an aspiration rather than a guarantee.

O_o....really? It was looking "dated" after 5 years? You do realize that most of the games that the PS2 was famous for (and still lauded today as pretty damn high achievements in gameplay and graphics) didn't come out until 5 years in to the console's lifespan.

The PS2 was released in 2000.

Shadow of the Colossus: 10/18/05

Remember Kingdom Hearts? Yeah, that didn't land in the US until almost 2.5 years after the console was released (9/16/02). However, look at how much better Kingdom Hearts 2 looked than the first KH and it was released, imagine that, 5 years after the console was first released (3/28/06 in the US 12/22/05 in JP).

Soul Calibur III? 5 years in the consoles life cycle: 10/25/05
God of War 2? 7 years in to the console cycle! 3/13/07
Final Fantasy XII? 6 years in to the console cycle: 10/31/06
Okami? 6 years in to the cycle: 9/19/06
Star Ocean 3? 4 years in to the cycle. 08/31/04

Most of the top selling games for the PS2 didn't show up until well in to the console's life cycle. I can remember that for YEARS all I pretty much had was Soul Reaver 2, FFX, Silent Hill 2, and Soul Calibur 2 and that was pretty much IT for the PS2 as far as blockbusters (as far as I can remember). Well, ICO was awesome, but it wasn't a blockbuster at the time. However, as the games continued to come -after- those first initial releases they only got better and better as time went on.

Soul Calibur 3 looks much better than SC2. God of War 2 crushed GoW1 in terms of graphics, and FFXII (like it or love it) pretty much crushed FFX in the graphics department.

To say that the PS2 looked "dated" when it was actually hitting its stride isn't just wrong it's stupid. As far as the Xbox 360 is concerned I can remember when all it was getting was "HD" versions of PS2 games -and- was still being outsold in terms of software. Oh, and that was during the PS2's "dated" looking games too.

I'm not disputing the fact that great games were released 5 years or after on PS2, what I am disputing is that graphically they were all nothing special, yes they pushed the boundaries of the PS2 because developers were maxing out the PS2 hardware by then so obviously sequels were looking better but graphically compared to PC they did look dated because DX8 and the DX9 pissed all over them with advanced pixel shading.
I owned a PS2 and enjoyed most of those games you mentioned but graphically the PS2 was in my opinion dated, even compared to the xbox games at that time. Look at the multi plat realeases at the time,
you mentioned Soul Calibur 3; graphically much better on xbox, Colin Mcrae 4 again the shading and frame rate was better on xbox, and I wouldn't even say the xbox was graphically brilliant for the time compared to PC.
I am simply saying that 10 years life-cycle for a console, graphically is too much as the games will look dated. Not to say that there still wouldn't be great games released, graphics are not everything.

1st, they have to create a console that actually works, don't rush anything this time. Secondly, they have to have a price tag that won't put them in the same place Sony was with the Ps3. If that console is priced too high, it won't sell that well, especially if it is flawed like the 360 was. Gates, heres a fair warning, if you put out another rushed console you will indeed fail again in the next generation. Everyone always says the third time is the charm, lets hope so Bill!!!!!!! Sony's ps3 is in the drivers seat, right now. The 360 is pretty much tapped out.
