Game consoles will be dead by 2020

WildTangent Chief Executive Alex St. John, who has built WildTangent into the one of the biggest online gaming networks over the past 10 years, made the bold prediction that video game consoles will be "extinct" by 2020.

He started his talk with an image of Moses on the screen and this rapid-fire comment:

"I am going to make some outrageous claims today. And then I will attempt to substantiate them. Feel free to disagree with me. Just remember, that I am right."

they'll surely try to move towards downloadable distribution. As they currently are. Less cost for them to distribute while they still charge the same price... In that sense yes, consoles how we know them might not exist. Although saying that they won't exist is a pretty idiotic comment imo...

But consoles will never be dead. You still need the hardware to sell the software. No matter which way you look at you're going to need the hardware. Be it a console, a PC w/ the proper components to run the software, or a tv w/ the components in it. And I don't really some PC or TV taking over consoles. With consoles being made more and more like PCs we could see the true merger of console and PC by 2020 but the fact remains, you still need the hardware and surely they'll still be called/considered consoles...

I'm still waiting for the Sega channel to be revamped. In such a day in age w/ internet readily available where is this generations Sega Channel? That was one of the best things about gaming on the Genesis back day. Maybe not even a Sega Channel but downloadable rentals. Downloadable gamefly rentals anyone? Cut the cost of shipping, cut having to buy the games, and get rid of the wait...

Oh no, that servered games sh*t again?

Man, we already got over centralized processing like 10 years a go, get over it. And anyway it would not be cheap hardware and bandwitch to use such a think! You´ll have to buy your machine in the future too, I know, it suckus, but you´ll still have to work in the future if you want to game.

Sorry to ruin your dreams.

Well the way the game industry is growing and the amount of money it is bringing in I can't see this happening. Now of course if he means the way games are brought into the house hold then of course. There is always something bigger and better out there. I guess we will all have to wait and see.

I think, before making assumptions like this, the next-gen consoles should be looked at, don't you think? (PS4, Xbox 3, Wii 2)

I don't think it's that simple. Making serious money with a console nowadays is really hard.

The more important factor, I think, is showing presence. And getting people acquainted to a company at a very young age. Gaming and consoles are everywhere, so that's were an electronics company would want to be.

When people get a blast out of a Sony console at a very young age, the brand Sony manifests into their brains and that might affect their purchasing decisions during their whole life.

9 - Quote from the article
..."Also, kids will increasingly have laptops at school and they will want to use them for games."

Yup, in 2020 everyone will have a computer; unlike now. Of course kids with laptops will be allowed to play games instead of doing school work, it only makes sense. Of course all of us would rather play on WildTangent than play on our PS3s, 360s and Wiis. And of course Sony, MS, and Nintendo will not pay attention to gaming trends and just let their billion dollar gaming business dry up and blow away. As far as investors are concerned, unless the dividend checks stop coming, they aren't going to do a damn thing.

This article is crap; they will not die because Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft and the customers won't let them die.

Although with some of the game installs they really aren’t too much different from the common computer.

Actually, if you calculate based on population growth that is out of controle since the industrial revolution, you´ll come to something more like more 40 years before the demand for basic things like food will be bigger than possible production (considering improvements on food suply growth).

When don´t matter anymore how much you work, your money can´t be changed for food, people will try hard and harder to go to places where there is still some resources, which shall be the first world since this governments shall have invested to save their people f*cking someone in Africa or whatever (for sure, it´s good business, people will have to sell their houses and mom to buy food), things will get warm by the time, but sooner or later, first world will also run out of resources, than this people will try and go into the third world (remember that guy on Africa? yes, he´ll not like to see you there), and this people from first world are the one with the real big guns governments for them to stand behind. Not cool when one guy with a big gun is fighting with some other guy with a big gun for the little bit of sand that is owned by a third one that only have a stick...

For sure, things will get pretty f*cked up here in South Hemisphere even before all that, but there in North, I think you guys we´ll not see thinks that much crashed on 2020.

But for sure, I´m not counting in armageddon by water, oil, politics differences, religion differences, ethynical differences, bowser, war economy, umbrella´s experiments on the flee, aliens, someone finally making it to angry some other guy that have a nuke and a big red button on a beautiful desk nor many other things that can ruin everything before this population growth, in fact, could stop it (if you get what I mean).

And just to let you guys know, no, there is nothing more to do about the population growth, the last time I see anyone going through the crazy maths on this, looks like the break point was left behind like in 1980´s, 1960´s or even before.

This article is BS he said that this will be the last generation of game consoles. WTF is this dude smoking. Nintendo is making too much money to end their gaming domination this generation. I also serioiusly doubt Sony or Microsoft will leave the gaming business either. They both have too much invested in it.

It's the opposite of what this guy is saying what's gonna happen. It's getting away from PC gaming!

C'mon, who wants to play on their freaking desk, it's a minority which is getting smaller and smaller. The future is in the living room.

From the industry side, PC games sales suffer from pirating, so it's not attractive for the industry. Original PC franchises like Battlefield coming to consoles exclusively.

Seems like this guy wrote the article not based on facts, but based on how he would like it.

14.1 - "Seems like this guy wrote the article not based on facts, but based on how he would like it. "
- Unfortunately, this happens all to often.

Good post, BTW. Apparently console gaming is one of the only tech sectors still unscathed by the economic downturn, and as you say: PC gaming is riddled with piracy (as well as the ubiquitous configuration nightmare).

Added to that, people like to buy boxes to plug in to their TV. Sony could release a TV that has PS3 inside it but why bother? They'd only be cutting their own profits. Branding and sales demand that consoles continue to be developed, even if they do become more and more like a desktop PC on the inside.

15.2 - LOL you aint far off
The Mayans' calendar ceases in 2012 I think, we'll all be dead by then.

On topic, consoles were responsible for 86% of the industry's sales this past year. Analysts have estimated the industry is targeted for 48.7 billion this year. Now, PC often looses as much as 50% of its sales via DD, which isn't reflected in sales. So I actually doubled the PC (from 6.86 billion to 13.72) and overall included the unreported revenue in the total (48.7 to 55.56). Consoles are still generating 61% of the money, and NO WAY does MS, Sony, and Nintendo walk away from 41 billion in sales. The way in which consoles generate income will be very similar to PCs by 2020 but that's all.

I agree on two points, first, I have the right to disagree with your assumptions and secondly, these are outrageous claims.

However, I completely disagree on two points. First, that this is the last generation, and second, that you're right.

This is a very likely possibility. In the future I see a subscription based system, with Wii like games and advertisement support. Madden 09 presented by "some beer company". Sadly I think people who got gaming to where it is will be left in the dust.

Do aliens invade or something? Console sales are doing absolutely great for all 3 companies. Games sales are high. I really dont see them going anywhere. If anything they might be the main electronic in your living room or bedroom.

Does the guy realise that even in a recession the only entertainment medium that keeps at a healthy profit is the video games one.

Even with high gas prices and food prices soaring gamers are so hardcore that they still but software.

If the industry did move to completely pc based gaming im not sure that would be profitable with the ease of which piracy can be achieved.

If gaming does more towards downloadable games then a mass majority of the planet would have to have real fast broadband - how long would it take to download MGS4 for instance on a 20meg download speed.Games in 10 years will probably be bigger than this..

Also the central server will have to be unbeleivably powerful and effiecient to cope with the demands of hundreds of thousands of gamers all downloading and playing stuff in what? - ultra hd (3840*2160) at 120fps.

Possibile i suppose but doubtful..........

One of the most stupidest and unsubstantiated pieces of rubbish I've ever heard. I bet this guy is mates with Brucey boy....

Software sales for PC's are going down. Software sales for consoles are ever invreasing. The value of the games buisness is rising year on year. We're already nearly %50 up on last year and ny far the most profitable and largest growing media section. Every single factual figure you can find shows you that this guy has not got a clue.

When the infrastructure becomes fast enough and avialbale to all households worldwide, then we may see a switch to digital distribution only, but theres an extremely long way to go before we get there. In all other respects, people will wish to immerse themselves in a game experience as they do now, in the comfort of their living room through a huge High def TV.

27 - Rubbish indeed
I have been a PC gamer for years and got sick and tired of upgrading constantly just to play games at the minimum requirements.

I'll be damned if I spend 300-500 dollars on a video card when I can spend that once on a console and have years of fun.

The problem with PC gaming is that developers are so concerned with graphics and visuals that is becomes detrimental to the industry it self. (it is like putting a big muffler on a Honda Civic, all noise no substance). As a result , games suffer from poor gameplay, design, creativity, and most importantly....FUN.

Console games on the other hand seem to place more emphasis on entertainment supported by nice visuals and audio.

I have had more enjoyment out of my PS3 in one year than I had out of my PC in 3 years.

Ha! Same thing was said since the videogame crash of the 80's...now look at them! Even in this recession we're going through, videogames still continue to excell in the entertainment industry. As long as there are males with a competivie spirit and a small amount of childhood nostalgia, I seriously doubt the videogame industry is in any kind of peril.
