Sliders, Avatars and Netflix Make Xbox Live Worth the Price?

Despite being only about $50 a year, you have to wonder if Xbox Live is really worth the price. Jereme Puik from GamePlasma certainly thinks that this will not even be a question with the new updates for Xbox Live.

For some of the younger or casual gamers, $50 a year might seem like a lot. These are just additional selling points for them.

It was worth $5 a month BEFORE Netflix. Now xbl is adding features...

BTW, for the last 2 years Ive gotten my xbl subscription for $39.99. So that's less than $4.00 a month, Cant even get a cheeseburger combo for that nowadays.

Ck Amazon, Pricegrabber & Dealtime for best pricing.

$5 a month. To be fair, that's like asking people to buy a ps3 when it was $600. Oh it will last you 10 years. So you're only paying $60 a year. $5 a month. And yet people still complained at how expensive it is. I know this isn't a direct comparison but it's true.

"So that's less than $4.00 a month, Cant even get a cheeseburger combo for that nowadays."

Yeah that pisses me off. But Burger King King Deals are $4.00 :D

But online gaming has ALWAYS been free on EVERYTHING ever made before XBL and after. Like CPU gaming and PSN, for example.

Think about it from the perspective of someone who ONLY wants to play with their friends every once and a while.

I agree completely. Onling gaming has always been free, except for MMOs (which require funding validly) and Microsoft.

Don't think for a second that Microsoft needs that $50 a year from you; they don't. But they know you'll pay it anyways like a sucker. I can afford $50 a year but the principle of paying to play online is wrong.

I will stick with free PSN.

Now that I am playing my PS3 online.. Yes, the Live system is nice and more put together. But I DONT CARE about netflix or avatars (what are we, 10?) and compared to the online gaming experience - the PS3 offers the same thing for no charge.

So in my (new and improved) opinion - yes it is too much. Unless you just really care about avatars or netflix.

I'm a Netflix customer and I'll just say that their online features suck. Only a select number of movies can be watched online and the quality is crap. Unless they add more movies to their online library and improve the video quality, I suspect a lot of 360 users will be disappointed.

It was easy to do it before they announced it. Besides I prefer a low power media pc to do all of my streaming to my tv.

3 - I hate the Avatar thing, but everything else is spectacular!
The addition of netflix, ability to install the full games to the hdd, etc, just totally made my day! My only beef with the update to LIVE is the stupid avatar system, looks so dumb, childish really, we were perfectly fine without it. Still, LIVE was already well worth the the price, now they're just giving us more bang for the buck, LIVE is still the best online service out there.

but still, if ppl have the options to put in elements from their favorite games, thats cool, maybe I'll be putting in elements from Gears of War, I'm a hardcore fan of that game, maybe I will like the system after all, we'll see. I'm just basing my opinion off of what they've shown us, which is CURRENTLY too much like the stupid ones from the wii.

It will always be wrong and no amount of fluff added will make it right. It doesn't matter how much make-up and clothes you slap on a dog. At the end of the day its still a f-ing dog.

5.1 - why? i have netfix and watch the "intstant play" movies on my tv right now without the 360. and i'm not paying an extra 50$ to do it.
the only way the netflix(or blockbuster) deal is sensational is if you can download as a rent-ANY MOVIE they have. but this isn't the case. they are offering what any netflix subscriber can already get without the 360.

7.2 - Agreed, 50$ a yr is nothing, and for a service that actually goes to extremes to combat hackers...
LIVE is completely worth the money as it guaruntees security and fund the providers with the means to keep it up and running and bring us more features to further reward us. LIVE is the only place where I've had no issues with hackers and will gladly pay to keep it that way. However, I have heard of there being some hackers OCCASIONALLY, but a bit more on psn and a LOT more on PC.

To put it simple, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Each console has its different combination of strengths and weaknesses, and different ways to distribute the costs and features. When you do the math and actually give both the 360 and ps3 a clean chance without any feelings of bias, you'll find that you can win either way, they're just different, and that's how we choose the console of preference-by which one is best suited for your personality, game preferences and tech-obsession.

Something that I just found out about the Netflix service on the 360 that I didn't previously know after listening to a podcast is that in order to use Netflix on the 360, you have to be subscribed to Netflix first, so basically that's an additional cost on top of Xbox Live.

I think that Xbox Live is coming closer to being worth $50 bucks a year, but it's not quite there yet. In my opinion, Xbox Live would be worth $50 bucks a year if there was no additional cost for Netflix on the Xbox 360. The way that I see it, the Netflix service on the 360 should be free for Xbox Live Gold Subscribers.

11 - No, Live is not worth the money.
No matter how many frills you add, it is not worth the cash. I play online and could care less about the frills. That is why the PC and PSN are so good, they are free and offer up what I want, online play.

My question to the authors of these types of articles is this... If adding avatars and netflix to the service makes like worth the yearly fee, then what was live prior to the additions? Not worth it? Exactly...

i think all those features will make xbox live worth $50 but i think by the time those features are implemented xbox live wont be worth it because home will be right around the corner and they will basically be equal with psn being a little more superior for 2 reasons...number 1 psn is free and number 2 home is waaaay more complex than any avatar or mii

You all do realize that you have to purchase a Netflix account to be able to use it on Xbox Live right? That's a purchase on top of a purchase for XBL usage.

So, let see here....basic netflix plan is 4.99 a month, so let me add this up...

XBL = $50 per year
Netflix = $60 per year.

So, for only the low low cost of around $110 a year Microsoft is giving you unparalleld online service! Not to mention the $50 a month you already pay for your INTERNET SERVICE. Woo, that's only $710 dollars a year! (assuming that your internet service is cable and no DSL or whatever).

What's that? My PS3 allows me to play online using my already paid for monthly cable service? It also allows me the option to rent/buy movies and TV shows for low set prices while not forcing me to pay a membership fee for either the movie or online service in case I decide not to use them that month?

Oh...that's much better then.

19 - Depends on if you have a gaming PC or not.
It may be worth it. It's a great feature but it all depends on the person if the 360 is worth buying. If you have a PC that is fast enough to game on I wouldn't buy a 360 since all the biggest game like Gears, Lost Planet, Bioshock, and Mass Effect ends up on the PC. I would get a PS3 because there Exclusives stay on the PS3 and don't come to PC. You can download movies on your PC already also via several movie services. Even the PS3 has a movie service now.

20 - $50 subscription then you can afford a PS3 right?
To all the people who tried to justify the $50/yr or 4.16/month need to see beyond this price. I know i can afford it...but not everybody can pay (kids, students, no job) or needs to pay if the customer/gamer can play online for free when they purchase a PS3/PC.

When XBOX 360 came out, you all xbox fanboys said...XBOX 360 is cheap, blah blah blah, PS3 is expensive. If its cheap then you guys should have purchase the PS3 in the first place because you knew that you can save more in the long run. So that excuse is non-sense.

edit:

Wow disagree already! Just a gamer's advise, you guys should demand that XBL should be free, don't allow them to rip you off. And another dilema, what will you guys do once the 3 yrs warranty is over? Pray and ponder it...think beyond. PEACE!

$200 difference before and now its $100, i think the $50/yr XBL justification won't be applicable now. XBOX 360 is turning 3 yrs and you guys have spent $150 already, while PS3/PC didn't spent any centavo playing online. Now if you add up every thing.

XBOX 5 yrs = $250
XBOX 360 = $150 (3 yrs)
XBOX 720 = ?

PS2 = $0
PS3 = $0
PS4 = $0

So who is the cheapest next gen console now? No lag playing exclusive games, updated firmware, XMB, HOME, in-game chat soon. What can you ask for as a potential PS3 buyer.

Personally I could care less as long as the online is fun......

but...

you put up a point about not everyone can afford it such as kids etc and thats the whole point on of the biggest reasons I like xbox live is the fact that not everyone can afford it especially kids which helps keep a lot of kids from being online and ruining it....the online is already filled with retards that pay a fee....can you imagine if it was for free????? then it would just be totally filled with morons and screaming kids

You don't care? Then why promote gamers to pay $50 then if you really care? I care because i want them to experience online game w/o limitations.

Are you trying to discriminate kids or people who doesn't have a job? Why? you're a kid once so stop discriminating people! And if you really hate listening to them then turn off you head set or play with your fellow claN members only...easy solution right? 5 yrs from now, this kids that you are talking about will be the potential buyer of next gen console, either you like it or not they will have a place in the gaming community as they are the reason and driving force that makes the videogames industry alive.

22 - No, no its not.
When PSN is free, and has virtually everything Live does (Netflix is extra, people), including not less lagged servers owned by multiple devs, it makes me wonder, why pay for something that you get can get for free? And the cost of Live on the 360 for wifi is even more expensive than a PS3. A bluetooth mic is cheaper than a 360 mic. Wifi comes with the PS3, but is an extra $100 on MS's system. I ended up paying $650 in order to pay for everything Xbox 360 offers that the PS3 already has. And that's NOT including LIVE. LIVE is $50 a year, which means that I've officially now spent $750 on a console that was supposed to be the cheapest. And that's not even including the games. Actually, PS3 has only costed me $630, because I bought it at launch, and Verizon Fios gives away HDMIs and Digital Optical cords for free if you need them (if you have their Cable Service).
So really, if I had bought PS3 last year, I would have spent $530 on it. Instead of $630. But you actually save money buying a PS3. Sadly, Microsoft doesn't want you to know that.

if your running a Fios internet for your games I question why you would be using wireless in the first place.......since it would be a smarter choice to be using a wired connection with that internet so you can host etc....but whatevs.... its true tho they both get expensive with extras you may need
