RE5: No shooting while running

TalkPlayStation.com writes:"From what we've seen in the trailers and videos from E3, you can't shoot while running in Resident Evil 5. Resident Evil 4 has this same problem and quite a lot of people complained about it. The stop and shoot mechanic is back.

We contacted Capcom regarding this issue and they sent a quick response back"

1 - RE5: No shooting while running
Newsflash, this just in. There's been no option to run and shoot since Resident Evil 1, duh. Resident Evil has always been about being its own brand of survival horror, period. Even though the new implementations in RE4 gave the game a bit more of a Third Person Shooter feel, the idea of having to stop and shoot provides more suspense and maneuvering limitability for the player. This is why it remains in tact.

1.1 - Read the article
STARS, if you actually read the full article it states that every RE game has been like that.

"Every RE game has been like that."

1.2 - that is true
but maybe a bit more mobility with other aspects of the players movement should be updated. You're absolutely right about the fact you know your limited so that in fact adds to the tension. Give me devil may cry controls or onimusha and there would be no real fear at all. Its like damned if you you do, damned if you dont for capcom and a double edge for the gamers.

I did read the article, AmaziN. I realize they mentioned that. I just feel if Capcom implemented walk and shoot or run and shoot then Resident Evil would be completely out of its element. It's already evolved into more of a shooter anyways, and I loved Resident Evil 4, don't get me wrong.

Good! It would really take some of the suspense out of the game if it was like The Suffering.

Honestly I feel it became pretty much an action game in RE4 already. RE4 was not scary at all. The only time I felt some sense of fear was when the chainsaw people came at me, but it wasn't 'scary', it was more like 'oh crap, quick get the shotgun'.

RE4 was not scary at all and I do not see that happening with RE5 either. So in a way I actually would like to be able to move while shooting (though WALKING and NOT RUNNING, just because it makes it a bit slower paced and not another Gears Of War clone). On the other hand though, they've used the second analog stick to dodge (God Hand style) so I'm a bit interested in how it turns out. Either way I just hope they implement some puzzles again (which was basically non-existent in RE4).

Oh and btw, I'm sure that Shinji Mikami (RE4 director) would've implemented the ability to shoot while on the move, but was NOT able to as a result of designing it for the GameCube (which didn't have a real second analog stick).

Barom.. I have to agree with you on that. RE4 was not scary or creepy in the least.

But then again, games like Fatal Frame and Silent Hill have always had more of a "scare" factor than any Resident Evil game.

I remember being 15-16 and playing Resident Evil 2 for the first time and being scared once in a while during the game. but then I played Silent Hill for the first time... WOW. Creeped out the WHOLE time.

1.7 - couldn't agree more
RE is no longer Survival Horror. Silent Hill was the master, especially SH2, but now Condemned seems to be the new kid on the block.

To everyone out there that says just because the previous RE's made you stop and aim so should this game, that's just dumb. Games evolve. By your logic, it should still look and sound like a PS1 game then. The fear shouldn't come from your frustrating inability to control your character realistically (that's what we like to call CHEAP), but from legitimate circumstances within the game world around you that are legitimately scary.

I think what they mean is with all the advancement in gaming technology... why cant you move around and shoot?

In real life would you just stand there shooting while a mob of enemies marches toward you?

That is the main reason why I never really liked the RE games.

2 - I think they should add some
sort or shooting and running just for realism. They could make the aiming off drastically when moving while shooting. Even as much as decreasing your chances of a direct hit by 60%. Then you would have the option at least.?.?

Not that I think the games are bad (in fact, I love them), but it always annoyed the crap out of me that the games are made harder and more frightening by gimping your character. Strafing anyone? I'll buy it regardless, but I wish they could find a way to incorporate such mechanics as strafing and keep the same feel. Heck, I'd be happy if I could take a single step to either side to go around a corner while facing the correct way instead of slowly turning around the corner.

Good it adds to the fear and requires you to actually plan your attack rather then running wild and shooting anything that moves. They are still trying to make a horror survival game not an action game so you know.

Very true, but at least being able to walk while aiming would make a big difference. I think a lot of people would be happy with any movement while aiming.

I love that logic. Broken gamplay mechanic = adds to fear and tension. So going by what you said there shouldn't be a run option either since that would stop you from "running wild" too.

I'll be really disappointed if there isn't at the very least an option to walk while shooting. I'm not asking for a total run and gun ability like uncharted. Something more like gears, slowly walking while shooting would be good. But just any movement at all would be an improvement.

RE4 is a top ten all time game, and I say this as a huge fan of the series, who has played every single re game since the first on ps1. So I do love the series, it just needs to change that one element.

How is good challanging gameplay broken gameplay? Just because you do not like to play the way they want you to play it does not make it broken.

Keep on believing whatever excuses you want to throw out there. I don't see why you defend the game this much though when this is obviously a glaring gameplay flaw.

Like my earlier post said, I've been a re fan for over 10 years now, starting with the first one. I'll probably play and love re5 too, even if it doesn't have the option to walk while shooting. But I'm not letting my love of the series blind me (like some) and I'll be the first to say that not being able to move while shooting = broken, outdated gameplay mechanic. Its one thing if you get people whining about completely customize the game and make the character do whatever you want, but not having a relatively simple, realistic action that 99% of games in the genre incorporate is really inexcusable at this point, especially for devs of this high quality.

And sorry, not being able to move while shooting isn't excusable as an added challenge. If you're going to go that route then why not just go back to the old re view with the clunky controls and fixed camera, I'm sure that would add to the challenge too. Its all about admitting problems in gameplay, fixing them and evolving the game. If the devs had your additude then re4 would have been exactly like re2 or code veronica, and it wouldn't have progressed into the masterpiece that it was.

9 - Well...
...running and shooting just seems bogus for a RE game especially because of it's action horror roots. You either shoot or you run, not being able to do both stays true to the RE series.

I don't see much horror in screens and video of RE5 :/ I mean you take on hordes of people/things in every other game nowadays, the only difference is the game mechanics, Chris, and the t-virus makes this a RE game. Otherwise it's just another action game.

i don't like it. it put me off RE4. sure it adds to the feel or suspense if you like... by making the character seem unrealistic in that he is frozen to the spot just because he is holding his gun...

it adds fear, takes away the realness of the character. it was the same in dead rising.

i agree with the other guy, they should be able to move, but his shots become less accurate.

i am sure if they wanted they could find a way round it ... if they wanted.

Yeah, the frozen position really takes me out of the believability of the game. I think walking while aiming with a slight sway of the weapon while doing so would do wonders. I'd say keep the sway enough to make a difference but no so much that you can't still headshot, because obviously trained soldiers in real life can continue moving at a reasonable pace and still aim well in CQB. I doubt it would be too hard for them to make the sway just enough to make you stand still for longer-range shots.

Yeah, if you can run, it would be easy, but you've seen how fast the zombies move now. They'll still catch you if you can backpedal at a walking pace. Walking while aiming is a very viable option.

No leave it as it is. Even though it is a limitation... the system works according to gameplay. It's a video game.. not some glorified military simulation.

RE5 desperately needs subtitle option. Seriously.

duh Capcom struck gold when they released RE4 and it was a huge success..why would they change their formula? They are the least innovative developer in the industry and will milk a franchise dry before thinking of spicing it up. Just look like RE.. like 3 sequels and 10 spin offs later..they finally realize they can't keep spewing out the same crap and released RE4. Take a look at DMC..drove it to the ground and DMC4 is a major let down..Megaman? Same thing (and they're STILL trying to milk the series). The street fighter series? like 20 years later they finally decided to depart with the crappy low res sprites when other companies have produced high res sprites fighter for so long now like Guilty Gear.

20 - it looks like RE5 isn't a "survival horror" game anymore.
nothing wrong with that. but, adding the ability to shoot while running won't hurt this game. from the demo and trailer playing at E3, this seems to be more of an "action/shooter now. so why not give the ability to shoot on the run?
i don't know i like the direction RE5 is taking but i'm still buying it all the same.

Those of you who have said that "it's the way it has always been and they shouldn't change it" are full of crap. So, should RE5 go back to fixed camera angles? Zombies that only walk in a very slow manner? kenshin22up... you have conflicting arguments in your comment. It should stay the same but update because no one wants the same old crap... what? When you are updating a series like this, sometimes you don't get everything quite the way you would like it in just one game. All games evolve, they have to or they become stale. I for one agree that you should be able to at least walk and shoot. The game would become too easy? Oh my god! How would we fix this!? How about by making the enemies harder. Wow, problem solved.

Yoru disagree isnt from me btw, What I was saying is Capcom WOULDN'T want to change, since they are horrible devs imo, even though I think they SHOULD

But really when you axe talented studios like Clover..and go on to make like the 20th megaman battle network, I think there's a problem. In ways I think Capcom is worse than EA.
