5 Reasons Why Trophies Are Better Than Achievements

"With the launch of PS3 firmware update 2.40 on July 2, Sony has officially launched their own gamer reward system to compete with Microsoft's well entrenched Achievement system. Microsoft was the first the out of the gate, and has had two and a half years to refine and improve their product. With this experience under their belt, is Microsoft's Achievement offering better than their rival's Trophy system? Or has the extra time allowed Sony to develop a superior reward system?

Trophies seem like a better idea than achievements to me. A good way for Microsoft to counter and 1 up Sony's trophies is to allow gamers to use achievements to purchase stuff off of live.

wow we need to stop these dumb stories. PS3 fanboys are trying to come up with the most absurd reasons for trophies being better than achievements. ACHIEVEMENTS ARE BETTER THAN TROPHYS PEOPLE. Think about it. With achievements, you can have 987 points. With trophies, you either have 4 or 5 or 6. Achievements are a lot more specific. Besides, on the 360, people actually take achievements seriously. Its a tried and true system.

Well I am having lots of fun with the Warhawk and Stardust HD Trophies, I take it you do not own them games. One thing I have noticed is that in my friends list no one has any trophies. All of my friends list have been waiting for Months for the trophy support to come out and then they dont even bother with it. Lots of people moan about things then actually never end up using it imo.

I think as gamers we need to be able to intelligently dissect and debate issues regardless of the game console platform(s) in question. First off if the article was to "compare and contrast the two reward systems" it wouldn't be titles "5 Reasons Why Trophies Are Better Than Achievements".

Second, it really doesn't give pros for the achievement system only for the trophy system. With that being said, it is clearly a bias article aimed to start a flame war. See it how you may, but it is what it is.

I have both systems, and I don't agree with the article. For me the trophy system still feels a bit bolted on and not truly integrated. Perhaps that's because all games don't support it. I still like the achievement system better. Perhaps that's because I don't have any trophies...lol

Thanks for the reply and bubble up. I actually strongly believe that both Achievements and Trophies are amazing reward systems and each have their own unique advantages. While their are differences between the two, ultimately they both serve to create added value to gamers and extend the life of the games we play. I'm really excited to see how Achievements and Trophies evolve over time.

ok so i have owned a ps3 basically from its launch and i have been just as excited for this firmware as anybody else but the lack of games that support trophies have really lessened my enthusiasm in a few months when more of my games support trophies i'm sure that i will have almost completely forgotten this feeling but as of right now trophies were kind of an interesting sidenote to in game XMB but nothing more.

I personally prefer the trophy system to acheivements (eg level system, platinum trophies) but would admit it's severely lacking support currently.

Here's my list of 5 reasons why the source site and this article is flamebait

5. his points are all speculation as trophies haven't even taken off yet.

4. he has no actual facts to support his claims for this article or the other article saying achievements are better than trophies.

3. he has no credibility as a game journalist since he works from a freaking blog.

2. he plays on the mind of loyal console fans to generate traffic to his site.

1. he's only using you guys to get you to go to his site and possibly hit a ad or two to generate ad revenue from google. It's the old bait and hook tactic. At least 1 out of 5 people probably clicked a link on his site and some point and time. Achievements and Trophies are both amazing reward systems and each have their own unique advantages - I thought it would be interesting to discuss their pros and cons. I'm very shocked that you accuse me of writing simply to get Google ad revenue (there aren't even any Google ads on the page). That really couldn't be further from the truth. Which stems from the original problem that Sony fixed, which is that it didn't even exist until a few weeks ago. It really is asking a lot for developers who finished up titles anywhere from a few months to over a year ago to patch in the trophy system for their games.

To me, Trophies accomplish the exact same thing as Achievements, so there's no need to argue over 'which is better'. The gamercard concept is far more important. And Sony is making Trophy support mandatory from September onward; they needed to give developers a grace period.

But achievements have one HUGE advantage over the trophies and that is that every single game supports them.

Who cares about trophies they dont mean anything. Will it ever reflect the hours i put into RFOM? Sigma? Madden 07, Heavenly Sword, Fight Night Round 3, Unreal Tournament 3, Rainbow Six Vegas, heck even Metal Gear Solid 4..

So although I like the overall system of trophies it will never be accurate. And for that reason alone the 360 wins in my mind.

Who cares how many trophies you have ive been playing since launch and what do I have to prove that? Someone could buy the console right now beat Super Stardust and be labeled a better gamer than me because they have more trophies... LAME!
