Kotaku Too Human Online Co-op Impressions

Michael McWhertor from Kotaku writes:

"Stephen Totilo from MTV Multiplayer and I tag-teamed a Troll today. Multiple Trolls, actually, and dozens of Goblins, as we tackled Too Human's online multiplayer co-op mode. Having completed the core single player campaign last night - it took me about 11 hours and change, for the record - and whipping through the first chapter again with my Champion class Baldur, I was a pretty good candidate for a Totilo power-leveler."

I thought you stopped reading because the Header and the story description did not immediately show what you wanted to see or was looking for.

Now I will read the hands-on.

2.1 - Well unless I am wrong, but
COD4 doesn't have a co-op story mode and R6V 2 has co-op for only two people, too.

This game is more along the divisive lines of Assassins Creed. There's repetitive gameplay and a short story but people will either love it or hate it. I'll even bet it hits a Metacritic of about 80 just like Assassins 81. :)

I don't want to pass judgment till i actually play it myself. I seriously doubt i would play it though. The concept of coop is intriguing and all but this game just has fail written over it. I'll wait for a couple of SK loyalists and general "buy every exclusive" type gamers to purchase and will be relying on others to tell me if this game is good or not.

I get where your coming from and whilst I think Too Human will be an enjoyable 8/10 game, it doesn't appear to be the killer IP (aka Eternal Darkness) that some, including myself, have been hoping for. Further it appears that the hype and development time may really hurt it come review time - 10hrs of story for 10years of conception?, etc.

Then again, there's always the sequel "Two Human" :/

4 - omg!
kotaku is so ant-360! they the suxxors!

all jokes aside, I still might buy this game just for the leveling and looting. I like to collect stuff.

One last thing, everybody loves to criticize the camera in games (Ninja Gaiden 2, Too Human) but very few mentioned the camera is pretty lousy in GTA 4. GTA 4 got a free pass on quite a few things.

4.1 - dude...
The camera in NG2 does suck balls. It's not just inconvenient, it makes some things downright stupidly hard, and completely defeats the purpose of some of the mechanics.

EXAMPLE:

Enemy Attacks>>>>DODGE!! !>>>>Ryu prays the enemy doesn't attack him while I try to point the camera back in the general direction of the enemy so I can counter attack>>>>Camera thinks it knows what I want and immediately points at corner with nothing in it>>>>DEATH!

UBERFAIL.

Cameras are much more critical in a game that requires close quarters evasion and combat.

I don't disagree with the GTAIV criticisms, although I don't ever remember it significantly hindering gameplay - largely thanks to the cleverly implemented auto aim feature that kept the action front and centre.

But in regards to NG2. I love the gameplay immensely and believe the combat engine to be unrivalled in the industry. BUT... the camera is awful and whilst I have some control over it, I often don't have time to move it when in such fast and furious combat, and as such it detracts from otherwise brilliant gameplay.

I'd suggest that Too Human's camera appears somewhere in the middle of the above examples. But we won't know for sure until we have those gold copies in our hands. :)

I think everyone getting upset with Too Human was just expecting too much from it from the beginning.

Personally, all I wanted out of the game was a hack n slash/dungeon crawler with moderate replayability. I haven't heard anything from anyone that goes against that.

The story is short; I don't care, I wasn't looking for the story to be any good in the first place.

You can beat it quickly; Still don't care because there is co-op, and you can replay levels that scale to your player level for added difficulty.

The combat is repetitive; I have never played a hack n slash that wasn't either a button masher or repetitive after a while. At least Too Human has classes that play differently for later on.

5.1 - yeah, it is kind of strange.
diablo 2 was praised as one of the best games ever by many people. what do you do mostly? kill repetitive enemies over and over and collect loot. is it's story anything spectacular? no. it's just fun as hell to level up, kill repetitive demons, collect loot, and trade with your friends.

what is the guy who wrote this preview of Too Human complaining about, you ask: leveling up, collecting loot, killing repetitive enemies, and trading with your friends. what is bad about this?

But, yeah, i'm sure this game is no diablo 2 but I think the guy who wrote this article is a little over-critical and may not even be a fan of the rpg/hack n slash dungeon crawl genre to begin with.

5.2 - One thing that will bug me is this...
When someone pauses, EVERYONE PAUSES. They should have just made it so the character is stuck in one spot doing nothing while he levels up so I can go kill stuff while he does it.

That would seriously make 4 player co-op suck if they kept it the way it is.

5.3 - @Lazy
My understanding is that when one player pauses the other player can continue playing... which is all well and good except for the fact that I can still die whilst I'm in the pause menu.

As quoted from MTV which played the co-op game with the Kotaku author above:

"The pause doesn’t interrupt the action, which is why I was killed while I was upgrading. That keeps the other player from waiting."

You can find it here: http://multiplayerblog.mtv....

Otherwise I think you're spot on. This will be the best looting, levelling and grinding dungeon crawler for consoles this year. But as for a mind-blowing IP, well the reviews speak for themselves. :)

But I'm still buying it, on the basis of the story concept, the cyber-Norse art, Diablo memories, and most importantly the need to make my own mind up. :)

6 - 11 hours of gameplay?
Great news. They just saved me 60 bucks. This is a definite rental. It looks pretty good but in no way would I spend 60 bucks for an 11 hour RPG.

6.2 - it's an approx 11 hour campaign
however, you can rerun through the various dungeons and levels at different levels of difficulty with better qualities of loot.
