Ninja Gaiden 2 costumes - value or rip off?

Three costume packs are now available for 200 points a piece for Tecmo's action ninja game. Msxbox-World raises the issue that is this stuff good value or a rip off, considering in the past this content would be an in game unlock?

1.1 - Me: sucker
I got em, the "fiend" and the "shadow walker" pack.. I'm a bit ashamed to say so because i agree with most people commenting here, these costumes should be earned, not bought. Normally I wouldn't dream of paying for this kind of dlc as I absolutely hate what MS has done to dlc in general, but NG is one of my favourite games and Ruy one of my favourite video-game characters. As a true fan of the game and Ryu I felt this was one exception I was willing to make. TBH, the costumes are actually quite cool, if there is anyone out there with some points they know they're not going to spend on anything else (like I had) I can recommend it. Especially Fiend Hayabusa and shadow walker. Now if you'll excuse Fiend Hayabusa: Costume 3,4 & 5 and Shadow walker Hayabusa: Costume 1, 2 & 5 need to slice and dice.

2 - agreed
A part of me believes that there's developers working hard on new stuff for the love of their work. They would like to offer this for free so that more gamers can appreciate what they've accomplished. The other part of me feels that executive decisions turn this into a way the company can make some more money.

4.1 - 200 for each costume, dude
Yeah total frakin' RIP OFF. I mean they've been able to make this crap unlockable thru gameplay since the freakin' 80's... these should have been in the retail version.

5 - It's a rip off
Alternate costumes are rewards players get for beating the game or for completed a certain task within the game.

These costumes don't enhance the game by giving unlimited health, max weapon power/abilities or super jumping ability, so they are worthless. Here we go with the Horse Armor all over again.

6 - So called fan service?
These kind of extras are classed as fan service, yet with the added cost attached to them means that the fans are being milked, when it is those fans who support the game. That's really quite a poor way of treating your fans in my view.

i hate how xbox money isnt just real money. all this point stuff seems like its designed to purposely confuse the consumer so you dont know how much money you are spending. make the costumes an unlockable feature in the game u tight arses.

I mean, by loggin on, I don't wanna be in the "Carnival" atmosphere where I pay $1 for 5 tickets yet every ride takes 3 tickets so no matter what at the end of the night you're left with 2 tickets you paid for that are completely useless (ie having 18 Mpts left over)

what i hate is this new DLC age we're in where games on all platforms get gimped in favor of charging us for crap that should be in the game to begin with.

10.1 - and then what?
charge even more for this sort of content to cover the loss? Or worse, start charging for demos and other stuff that's free now. I think the Live cost is justified, but these additional costs are certainly not.

You can't even blame the game companies either: I read somewhere that game companies sometimes want to offer content for free but M$ makes them charge for it...

Yes Epic has had a few issues with Microsoft because they wanted their content to be free. However, others like EA milk us for every penny when stuff like this used to come in the game. Actually to think of it EA now puts it on the game disc and then charges you for it so technically you aren't even downloading new content!

It's a ripoff.

I think that downloadable content can be both good and it can be bad.

It can be good because developers can add new stuff in a game, but it can be bad because developers may intentionally leave out stuff in the game that should be just unlockables and just save it so that it can be downloaded so they can just make more money.

When games cost $59.99, developers should be packing as much into a game as possible. Extra costumes in a game should be unlockables, not downloadable content, I mean, in MGS4 you can unlock multiple FaceCamo's, the Altair costume, and tons of other costums while playing the game.

15 - i'm getting them.
probably every set of them... i'll be playing this game enough that i'll need some variety in there.

is it a ripoff?? i don't know... depends how much it took on the programmers part to create them, something we'll probably never know. but if you think it's a ripoff, don't buy it, simple as that.

2.50 just isn't that much money... i probably made that much just sitting here at work in the time it took me to write this post.

16 - I hate how people pitch a fit about DLC...
If you don't like it, and it in no way changes the game play or gives anybody an advantage against another player, then by all means, don't buy it if you think it is too high priced. It's simple, vote with your wallet.

16.1 - You
Miss the point entirely. This kind of content used to be free and in some games it is free (as one poster has already pointed out in MGS 4). People should be able to stand up and say "I'm not purchasing it out of principle".

I'll say it again, this content should be available as in game unlocks.

I believe Tecmo allowed gamers to purchase swimwear for DOA XVB 2, for those who couldn't be bothered or not had the time to unlock it via play. This raises other issues, but at least those who stuck with the game didn't have to pay. It seems the reverse here, where those fans who stick with the delightful game, get fleeced if they want new stuff to play with.

come on how are people suppost to get mad about this though..?
you wana buy them you pay 2 dollars, if you dont then fine.

however MGO character creator is complete BS!! you can only make 1 character per ps3!! wtf kinda BS is that about. thats something to seriously get outraged by. if you wana make a new one you gotta pay 6 dollars!!! now that pisses me of seriously.

While I agree that getting bent out of shape over some DLC is likely pointless, the same thing surely applies to MGO character creation. Limiting/charging users for more than one profile could be seen as a way of curbing immature behavior, defraying the cost of running servers for longer (after all, if more than one person is using the same ps3 then it stands to reason that more time will be spent on the MGO server, right?), and making the whole leveling up specific character skills actually mean something. I'm not necessarily happy they're doing it, but there are at least potentially plausible reasons for that decision. Charging $2.00 for a costume? Probably just about making some quick cash.

DO NOT WANT!

There are already costumes that are unlocked by beating the game on different difficulties. To me, those are worth more than ones that can be bought.

19.1 - This generation
That's also a valid point, and a testament to the way things are this generation. At least it shows that this kind of activity isn't strictly limited to Microsoft. Where is the justification here though? Last generation, content was free - maybe I'm ignorant, but I didn't hear loads of developers making complaints about how they should be charging for additional content.

Also you have to consider those fans of the game who aren't hooked up to Live with their Xbox 360 and that they miss out on stuff like this because it's not in the game they purchased.

It's $6 for 3 new characters slots, so that's instantly proof you're talking rubbish.

Also, bare in mind that MGO is going to be completely supported (the dedicated servers, for example) by DLC. If you never make another character, you don't have to pay. If you're serious about playing, you won't make a new character since you can switch skills and level up everything anyway and still maintain your ranking/stats and everything else. And it's better because of it. You have 1 character, that's it, make it work.

A friend comes over and wants to use their own character? They can log in with their Konami ID and have their character, including all their stats while at your house.

OH SWEET! New horse armor... I mean, costumes for Ryu! Seriously though, what kind of ninja wears a mustard colored outfit? I suppose it would be helpful if you have to assassinate somebody at the Heinz factory, but other than that where does it make sense?!

I have no problem with these companies wanting to make money, but there need to be a cap or a standard for what should be charged.
