Console war: How Sony lost exclusives
20
Newsweek's N'Gai Croal describes the battle of the HD consoles with an emphasis on Microsoft, detailing the company's expectation to sell 10 million Xbox 360s before the PS3 launch. Microsoft revised the goal to 10 million units sold by the end of this year, and Croal isn't sure that'll even happen. The second and third parts of this three-part series consider why 360 software sales haven't yet boosted demands for the hardware and how Microsoft courted many titles away from PS3-exclusive status.
Croal says that Sony was too focused on Japanese developers and its national launch of the PS3 that its American and European divisions couldn't get developer negotiation approval from the Japanese mothership. Microsoft maintained contact with Rockstar and others through this Sony silence, scaring up Xbox 360 versions of third-party PlayStation mainstays. Apparently, Ubisoft wanted Assassin's Creed to be a PS3 exclusive but couldn't steal Sony's focus from the initial Japanese launch.

1 - that and money!!!!
Sony probably won't have 1 mil units in any respective country till march or summer. Publishers are going to take the safe bet and go with the xbox 360 to pull out a profit.

Man all those casual gamers sitting on the sidelines. Those third party game developers are going to have a lot of power.

5 - Developers matter most
So this confirms that Sony was more interested in the Japanese launch than any other country and it has seriously hurt them. That is just the stupidest reason for losing exclusive licenses because it is the easiest to prevent.

"We really feel like we're well positioned to contribute platform-defining games from a first-party standpoint, and we're not dependent on third-party community to the degree that a Microsoft would be."
Ok? Forza 2, mass effect, bioshock, GOW, next splinter cell, fable 2, etc etc what is this moron talking about, Microsoft has excellent first party games, what an idiot what he said was a blatant stab at Microsoft and it wasn't even accurate

6.1 - Kinda sad that Microsoft bought the splinter cell franchise.
There's no telling how great it could've been. And aren't Mass Effect and Bioshock third-party titles?

Actually, Bioshock, GOW and Splinter Cell are 360 exclusives - they're not first party titles.
GOW may be an exception since MS helped produce the game, although Epic is an independent game studio.
Viva Pinata, Too Human, Mass Effect, Forza 2, Crackdown, and Fable 2 - those are first party titles from MS.
Im not sure what first party title Sony is so proud of. Crash Bandicoot? Jax and Dexter? Ratchet and Clank? The Playstation was built on Final Fantasy, Metal Gear and Grand Theft Auto - all 3rd party titles.

has always been better on xbox. i barely had to try to beat chaos theory on the ps2 and gamecube. it sells better on xbox because most sony fans jock metal gear. makes perfect sense for ubi to do it.

Yeah good point ernande, Sony was build by 3rd party titles...most notably; Grand Theft Auto! They do have alot of kiddie games that has done well. But games like Killzone, Socom, and a few others...have been less than impressive.
Like I said before, Sony has a huge fanbase and Sony is banking on this. They know there fans will come crawling no matter what. And thats why they're not worried about keeping or getting exclusives. On the other hand, Microsoft knew they had some work to do to gain market share and grabbed the exclusives. The smart gamer will choose the 360 for the better games and exclusives. Its good to see Microsoft is doing whatever they can to improve on their console and their customers... while others just release games that are just "underdeveloped" or unimpressive!

7.1 - I can see what you mean
Instead of buying up 3rd party titles like Microsoft, Sony's too busy establishing relationships with developers and expanding their internal studios. Sure they push the creation of new IPs, but they've grown so large that their ability to cater to the needs of every 3rd party developer is becoming harder and harder. 3rd party Devs still want to develop for Sony's platform, but with development costs rising there's more risk when one stays platform exclusive unless Sony offers them some kind of greater incentive.
Square, Konami, Factor 5, Level-5 (lot of 5's), Insomniac, and other companies are an example of Sony's strategy of creating trust instead of legal contracts. Whether this strategy will continue to work with upcoming generations has yet to be seen, especially when Microsoft prefers to pay cash for exclusivity.

7.2 - Yes DJ
but those companies you named are also allowed to develop for there competition when you don't make legal contracts. Im sure sony would have loved to have seen Final Fantasy 3 on there psp, but instead it was developed for its only competitor the ds.

8 - Resistance is the only good exclusive ps3 currently has available...
the rest of the launch titles were crap, so many multiplatform games running better on the 360...
Developers may have only had 6 months with final ps3 dev kits...but many developers, especially ones that make sony's exclusives have been working on the games for well over a year before the 360 launched, and they already knew the hardware capabilities they were going to have at their disposal in the ps3, and therefore had the right amount of time to take advantage of that power, and look at the results...
pathetic

11 - How many consoles to write a game for!
When microsoft launched the 360 they did so with 3x the stock that Sony have launched with, if Sony are struggling at this point with the poor numbers of units to sell, when are they going to ever catch up. To spend 20 million on a games development to sell to a smaller base ( seeing as how the PS3 is reputedly harder to code on therefore pushing up development costs as opposed to the 360 alledgedly being easier to code for than a PC) it is hard to see how they can succeed. Is it any wonder that it is losing all these 'Exclusives' Developers write games to make money, it's a business. It seem's that as a business,Sony have dropped the ball, check out how their share prices have fared recently , no wonder developers are looking elsewere.Sony's future is looking bleaker by the day. The PS3 is the new Dreamcast!

They will catch up on supply soon. And they will sell more than the 360 very soon after they do. An installed fanbase is the best thing anyone can have going for them at this point, and I have a feeling it will be the deciding factor in this generation of consoles. Nintendo has some installed fanbase, Microsoft has a little more, but Sony has millions upon millions of people who are willing to buy their hardware just because of eleven shiny silver letters. They had a hugely successful product with the PS2, and that name carries a lot of weight with these consumers. It's going to take a lot of work to break that sort of fanbase down, and it probably won't be until the next next-gen race, and only if Sony doesn't deliver this time around, until they lose any part of this installed market share.
It's not pretty, and it doesn't make any sense to me, but that's the way I see it going.

12 - This was a great article.
One problem , Microsoft needs to have a press release on the actual number of 360's sold. 5.5 million seems to be the media fall back number when they do thier story research. If you read news stories it has been at 5.5 million since the end of May - Beginning of June '06. It is actually closer to 7 million worlwide. A few articles actually have the updated number.
It bothers me for the simple reason that they are using the 5 million number for like 5 or 6 months , in every article.
