Kotaku: Resident Evil 5 Not Redesigned After Race Criticism, Says Producer

Kotaku writes: "When Capcom first showed Resident Evil 5 at E3 2007, there was a collective sense that what we'd just seen was going to stir the pot, as a big brawny white guy had just done his share of laying waste to an angry mob of Africans. Sure enough, Capcom of Japan received more than its share of criticism from those inside and outside of the gaming press. The first to lobby a notable complaint was blog Black Looks, writing that RE5 was "problematic on so many levels, including the depiction of Black people as inhuman savages."

Newsweek's general editor of tech N'Gai Croal later levied a similar but more measured assessment, saying that much of what was shown in the initial trailer "dovetailed with classic racist imagery," leaving him with the impression that "Clearly no one black worked on this game.""

1 - uh, really?
In that new trailer I seemed to notice there actually being white zombies as opposed to the initial previews that showed no white zombies. I think they're just doing a little damage control if you ask me.

But really, if you'll excuse my ignorance, the game just seems ackward now. It's like, what's that random white guy doing in a crowd of indigenous african people. And why is he wearing that tribal head dress? Is he supposed to be an albino african or something? I keed, I keed, just mayka little joke...QUICK Somebody call the Rev. Jesse Jackson!

1.1 - yeah I would of gone the opposite way
and try to stir up more controversy. Like oh you didn't like the first trailer? well check this one out! But then I don't work for a publicly traded company... Capcom did what they had to do in this case I guess.

1.2 - heh
Yah, a random white guy doing in a crowd of indigenous african people is a little off. Though I do think it would throw some people off as they question how the hell he got there. In the end, all the people crying racism will make killing all the indigenous people that much sweeter >:)
