Sixaxis "not sensitive enough" for FPS aiming - Resi 5 producer

Eurogamer writes: "Jun Takeuchi has said that the PlayStation 3's Sixaxis controller wasn't a viable option for aiming in Resident Evil 5.

Responding to an inquiry from a European journalist, who raised the prospect of a PS3 control system similar to Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, Takeuchi said Sony's much-maligned motion-sensing controller "was not quite sensitive enough for that".

Takeuchi expressed his fondness for the PS3, though, calling it "a great system". "We're really pleased with it, and certainly as with other developers we did have problems getting to grips with it at first, but now understanding how it works it allows us to do a lot of things we couldn't do before," he said through a translator at Capcom's Captivate 08 event in Las Vegas."

1 - It`s true.
The 6axis is better used for "smaller" features.

1.1 - Yeah its a bonus feature not meant to be
the main gameplay mechanic. Its pretty responsive though

@condy

Yeah i think that would be awesome, it a natural reflex too. It would be perfect to get those blood suckers off my neck.

1.2 - Agreed ^
I wonder if they'll be using the SixAxis for other stuff, such as being able to shake away a dude with a Chainsaw coming down your neck etc

"dude with a Chainsaw coming down your neck " Chainsaw aside, that just sounds all wrong.

I coudl ahve told you this.

It's good for balancing though, and shaking. I love shaking enemies off in Resistance, it's so much fun.

But in GTA4, I use it only for the reloading and mini-games. It's not responsive enoguh for helicopter or bike.

I would like to see it used in Mirrors edge, to keep balance or momentum by titling it forwards, but also literally to lean INTO corners when running, so you can keep momentum.

Either way, there are tons of 1st party Sony developers who are evry clever, and will no doubt incorporate it.

Yea please don't use it for aiming or driving but like someone mention above use it for the small features, that's when it works best. I can really see them using it to shack off zombies in the game.

1.8 - its real good for flying
I've not experienced anything like that yet anywhere else (warhawk)

but unless its implemented in the right way ala HV bowling it will be sh*tted on by some. Ill admit that it seems devs are finding the use of the sixaxis's motion control hard to justify or implement but this is year 2 and I'm sure bigger things are to come. People should see motion control as an extra feature like rumble just better. Combine the two and extra game mechanics can be unlocked. I bet you any money that all three, plus any other new entrants to the console market, will have some form of motion control. Its free and people should not be complaining unless we're forced to use it for stupid reasons.

I completely agree that it's best suited for smaller, less constant jobs. If anything I would say it's too sensitive when used to control movement... The more sensitive the more difficult to control precisely.

Sixaxis just feels its inclinations and pushing directions (basic accelerometer), we don't have, on sixaxis, anything pointer-like or scanning its position on the space. It's a very different (simpler) motion capture tech than that on Wiimote (which is a motion dedicated product).

Sixaxis is not made to use as a Wiimote, this "european journalist" should know it if he is game specialized... Maybe he does know and is just trying to be an @ss.

Honestly, did anyone ever think it would be capable of such advanced positioning?

It only has "basic" tilt sensitivity.

2.1 - Wha?
What are you talking about? "Basic." What's your definition of basic? I personally hate most six axis functions in games, even the ones that work perfectly as in flOw for instance, but six axes of orientation detection is anything but basic; all axes supported is as good as it can get and the controls can be as sensitive as developers need, but I do agree motion controls would be misused if applied to aiming as the developer suggested. No hard feelings friend :)

None of my business, but he just told you why he disagreed, that was what the whole comment was about. Sixaxis isn't just basic tilt it works on every axis etc.

The ps3's controller has so much unlocked potential. Think about all the uses you could use it for in the puzzles, the reloading, the dropping and picking up of items. Anything with a direct line to the console and your screen. It'd be perfect for so many things that these devs aren't using it for.

Uhhhh I'm not sure how you could even use the Sixaxis' motion-sensing capabilities in a similar way to the Wiimote's pointing abilities. No one has EVER mentioned an existing shooters inability to utilise the motion-sensing for gunplay. Why now all of a sudden?

And on top of that, why would you want to? Games based off motion-sensing are GAYYYY.

they should probably just stop the sixaxis BS, everyone knows that was just a gimmick Sony cooked up because they did not have rumble at the time and they needed some kind of feature for the controller since 360 and wii had something.

You can drop the con now Sony, no one cares about the joke that was sixaxis, quit ruining games buy trying to shoe horn that crap into them. You have rumble now, just go with that.

It's a "gimmick" I actually enjoy when used correctly or in an interesting way. Flow, I still play to this day, a game built around the sixaxis.

As long as it's optional like GTA for example I don't see why you'd have a problem with it, turn it off.

8.2 - No no
if it is otional that is fine, but then I worry about how much time and resources a developer is wasting by programming it into a game when no one is going to use it. I would rather they skip that and use the energy making the game better, or completing the game sooner.

Sixaxis is cool. You just hate Sony. Get a grip on life mr.marbles.

Sixaxis is good for warhawk flying, reload in a couple games, free throws in live, HVBowling just to name a few. I agree it doesnt need to be a full function to play, but the small things it can do just enhance gameplay and give you more options with your button config. I LOVE it for reload.

I loved the aftertouch in Heavenly Sword and would gladly accept features like that in games. It also worked well with balancing in Uncharted. Shaking stuff off in Resistance is pretty cool too. Did you know you could shake off fire in Multiplayer? There are plenty of places where it is implemented impressively. It's not time to scrap Sixaxis yet.

The games coming out for xbox and ps3.. I am weak just thinking about'em.... so is my wallet.

Jun's been around since day 1 of the Resident Evil series. I hope he will blow me away for the 3rd time, though.

see, but that's the beauty of SIXAXIS, you don't have to use it if it doesn't fit. Unlike the Wiimote. IMO, Nintendo should have packaged in a Classic Controller with the Wii so devs wouldn't be forced to use the Wiimote.

Add another one.
But in reality it really won't matter because both versions have to be the same.

No one can honestly say that the 360 is NOT holding the PS3 back.

14 - its good when 1 axis is required at a time
eg Motorstorm uses 2 axis, 1 for steering, 1 for tilting vehicle when in the air - 1 axis the majority of the time

Uncharted did something very well. Throwing a grenade requires the use of a single axis, - 1 axis to adjust the height of your throw, and of cours balancing

Warhawk however is a nightmare for me only when flying. When tilting with more than 1 axis (steering AND diving), I lose control. im sure others have mastered it

a PS3 who would in their right mind would want to use the sixaxis as a aiming for a gun. Keep the joysticks, leave the aiming crap for the Wii. I like it the way it is.
