Rare on Banjo: "We're not competing with LittleBigPlanet"

VG247: Salvatore Fileccia, lead programmer of Rare's Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, has said his game isn't in direct competition with Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet, despite the two platformers sharing a passion for furthering the genre.

"I don't think we're a competitor," he said. "I think, obviously, we compete in a completely different dimension; we're 3D, they're 2D. I mean, I don't know the complete details of LittleBigPlanet, obviously, but I'm pretty sure the two games are going to be pretty different."

Personally, I don't see anything competing with LBP. In terms of user generated content and freedom of expression it's in a league of it's own.

If anything is "competing" with LBP, this is the closest you'll get =)

I have Crayon Physics, it's fun, but it's no LBP. Incredible physics engine for such a small app though.

"Phun" is also another nice little PC app if you wanna play around with physics. http://www.vrlab.umu.se/res...

2D?

Well I think it's stil pretty much 3D. Maybe Sidescrolling, may have been said... but it's hardly 2D.

LBP is a 2D platformer because you can only move in two dimensions (x and y).

Banjo is a 3D platformer because you can move in three dimensions (x,y and z).

This just further illustrates how different these titles actually are.

Watch more videos. LittleBigPlanet is more 2.5D, you can move in more than just the x & y axes. There is a z axes of depth as well, but it's not very prominent. Watch some of the videos where you see things being placed in front of and behind other things, and the sackboys going behind or in front of various objects.

Itd be dumb if they were, no offense to the Banjo series but seeing the vehicle emphasis it now has with this game and the layers of depth :BP haas it would be a very dumb thing to do.they have similar texture styles and its good that Rare has straightened this out.

Anyone wanna help me out here? Use whichever you guys pick and just copy paste

1) Well I find no value in your comment

2) If sackboy could be killed within a first person view that would be totally acceptable right.

3)You have no creativity therefore you dont count.

Personal Opinion (you dont get to copy paste this one!)

LBP has nothing to do with exclusivity, therefore your theory is incorrect, I would be equally as interested in LBP if it were for 360 (but you know thats not gonna happen b/c of how closed MS is with 360) because of its depth and expression, its just a totally different genre. No its not mario sorry.

Why would you waste your time by coming in here and just hating on a game when everyone else was being pretty positive. Sounds pretty sad to me. However, your opinion means nothing to everyone in here, so I'll just keep being excited about the new innovative IP that is LittleBigPlanet, and you can keep waiting for another Mario gamecube game.

the jumping is too floaty? so are you saying you want real world physics in lbp?

you see no value in lbp and apparently banjo? are you saying they are not valuable to you? you say that later but most people with some sense can look at an app and say "well it isn't my cuppa tea but i understand the attraction."

Ok. Have you seen any preview of the game? I mean, all previewer; even Kotaku (aka Sony haters) say that it's a hell of fun. And innovative. I remember seen a preview of LBP on X-play and they were saying that they notice that everyone that was playing the demo, always had a smile on their faces. Yo, no even Mario makes me smile anymore while i'm playing it, and if a game can do that. I'm going to f*cking buying. (Like i did with R&C:ToD)

That a game isn't fun to you, don't mean that it isn't to millions.

I don't agree with Presentist at all. I think LBP is going to shock many people.

On another note I just want to show the other side of something.

I'm shocked to see so many "gamers" in denial about how awesome (insert any 360 title)is going to be just because its on the 360.

Don't act like people are only critical of the PS3 and it's games.

5.9 - Dude u mustve been hiding under a rock too long if u think LBP has no value..
For those looking for an amazing platform game expirience plus user creativity at its best, LBP will have both the best worlds of those and will keep u busy and having alot of fun enjoying this game for many months and beyond.

Banjo on the other hand is said to be 80% about vehicles, so that automatically makes me know this will be more of a create your vehicle to use against others but takes away alot of the platforming aspects which has made this franchise so big. I still think banjo will be a good game, im just not sure or it will deliver as much as we want it to in the platforming side.

11 - The only gamers who compare are Fanboys of one Creed/Console on like every game possible
It is ridiculous LBP comes up when you think Banjo. Not in the same league. "LBP is old-school side scroller with user mods." Nothing revolutionary but pretty much the first on a console to do so.

What is there to compare?...not much to flaim about, so some can feel better about their console of choice.

Why do people automatcially assume that Banjo cant "compete" with LBP?
Until both games are released and playtested by the majority then to make such assumptions is rather arrogant and blind, how would you feel if LBP got a score of 7 and Banjo got a 9? pretty silly one would think, you cant judge a book by its cover, lair and haze springs to mind
Shut this user up Let user speak
butterfinger - 575 days 11 hours ago
13.1 - I agree in part...
that to assume one game is going to be better than the other is just plain ignorant (come on, we all know what ASSuME means lol), but I must say if LittleBigPlanet received a 7 and Banjo an 8, not only would I be incredibly shocked (since alot of people who have been amazed by LBP in previews will also be reviewing it) but it would not change the fact that in order to determine which game is better you have to play it for yourself. Like you said, you can't judge a book by its cover, Perfect Dark Zero springs to mind.

You guys both make good points and I like the cheeky tit for tat without it getting nasty... NGII springs to mind on 360 (I'll buy it anyway) as does Madden 08 on PS3.

Now back on topic the two games are different products.

Banjo is a 3D open world platformer where the platform skills are determined by a user's imagination (eg. the vehicles) but the world itself is pre-designed and follows a largely linear narrative.

LBP is a 2D closed world platformer where there is no narrative, and whilst there is a relatively brief single player mode the focus is squarely on user generated levels (as opposed to user generated abilities) and online community sharing.

The confusion comes in that they are both pushing user generated content and platforming, but they are doing such in so vastly different ways that comparing them seems futile.

At the end of the day what's truly exciting is that both consoles are seeing game developers pushing the boundaries beyond the staples of shooters and sports and into far more interesting game design ideas.

Both titles are very high on my most wanted list radar! :)

EDIT:

@from the beach - exactly right. They both feature user generated content but Banjo's is focused on player abilities whilst LBP is focused on level design.

I agree one hundred percent! It is always nice to see new IPs or anything other than shooters dropping on next-gen consoles. Sometimes it seems as though Sony and Microsoft have failed to notice that Nintendo has done quite well this generation, and their most popular games are definitely not shooters. However, I absolutely loved Resident Evil 4 on the Wii:P

@ukilnme - cheers mate, I pay the same compliment to your posts! :)

@butterfinger - yeah it's nice to see Sony and MS starting to more openly encourage developers to innovate more. Some of the stuff on Nintendo is very cool, non shooters like Galaxy, Boom Blox and even the more basic Wii Fit have impressed me immensely with their fresh ideas. But even the shooters, particularly RE4 and Metroid3, have innovated the control schemes and gameplay in their genre.

Bubbles for intelligent discussion. :)

Uh...What? I did not miss anything. Your post clearly states that Banjo fans are comparing the two. My response stated that LBP fans made the comparisons two or three weeks ago. I know I'm a caveman but I can read.

Who said anything about fanboys? Being a fan of Banjo does not make one a fanboy. Same goes for LBP fans.

I don't really understand the comparisons between these two games. I mean both involve building things but that's really about it, seems like what you're building and how it affects gameplay are completely different in each.

I don't agree that there are no similarities between these two games. They both utilise user created content mechanics, they both appeal to a more casual audience, they both push community sharing and they're both platformers.

The thing is, Banjo stops at making contraptions to help you traverse these platforms whereas Little Big Planet goes further and allows you to create said platforms as well as creating things to help you traverse them. There are definite similarities, but one pushes the boundaries a bit further and in that respect, I would say Little Big Planet has a distinct edge.

Banjo is above being compared to other games in that it is individual and stands apart form the rest. There's nothing like it, as with LittleBigPlanet and many more games on all consoles. Especially Nintendo with their crazy, hallucinogenic ideas.

LBP doesn`t have competition from any game on consoles right now because is way too different to other platformers out there.
Rare while with nintendo was one if not my favorite developers since they were the creators of the donkey kong country(my favorite adventure games)and dk64 series,my favorite 2d fighting games killer instinct 1&2 and i also liked the look of banjo-kazooie 64.
