Next Gen Games: To HD or not to HD?

Is 720p really all it's cracked up to be? Many big budget titles say no.

As long as they look good and play well I'm happy...

1.1 - Still, I prefer 720p or 1080p.
Frame rate is key and it must be smooth, but a lower res is a disappointment. Halo 3 and COD4 look great but there is some aliasing issues that would be resolved if they ran at 720p natively.

1.2 - well if they look well, play smooth, framerate is fixed..
why not to have a higher res crisper picture...i mean

do the basics then go for the advance, not the other way around

Yeah for all the high def games out there is hardly a handful that are actually running in high def. I just get fed up of all the resolution talk. If it plays great and gets you hooked in why bother with the resolution.

before I spent $1200 on an HDTV.

That's part of the problem people are having.

There was a lot of talk of 1080p gaming before this generation started & it seems some games are struggling to reach 720p.

There is no denying that some of these games look great, and of course I would sacrifice resolution for a stable frame-rate.

It's just that people's high def TV's are not being used fully, and this ‘gen’ may not be the high-def era it was touted, at least not till the end of this 'gen' or even the next.

I thought the joy of consoles were they allowed you to pop the disc in and play, no need to play with settings or resolutions to try and get the optimum performance vs visuals your hardware can handle like on the PC.

This is what the developers have done for you, they have optimized the settings for their game to try and provide you with the best performance to visuals the current build can support.

Example, reducing the res slightly to allow for better AA is a smart move, you can instantly see with the human eye the lack on AA on screen, but these "small" resolution difference are not recognizable, you need to be TOLD about them.

If the drop was 1080 --> 576 or 600 or 640 or whatever, Id understand the drama, but they're not. At the end of the day it boils down to people wanting something to moan/brag over.

5.1 - Fishy, you came across something that has really been bothering me.....
I play console games because they are simple and fun. You put in a disk and go. I don't have to worry about checking resolution. I don't need to turn on different color schemes. I don't need to check my white balance to see if the developer produced the game with white balancing. I don't have to install part of the game to my hard drive. I just put my game disk in and go. I love it!

How do people like you get in the Gamerzone? It has happened with Halo and other 360 titles as well...

It’s happened more recently on the PS3, that’s for sure, but remember the most famous case is till Halo 3.

Halo 3? COD4?

It has nothing to do with which console, it all comes down to choices made by the developers.
Actually it come more down to "gamers" being fussy enough to care about this sort of rubbish.
The fact remains you had to be TOLD about the res difference in all these games.

Dont remember anyone saying "wow, the resolution seems a little low" do you?

The 360 and PS3 are capable of doing 720 and 1080, although at that resolution I wouldn't expect too much to be happening on the screen at any one moment.
The problem is the companies making the games have time tables and budgets to stick to, and there is no real benefit to upgrading the resolution when it comes to sales.
Imagine buying a house and then investing massive amounts of time and money putting in gold taps and hand rails only to find it has not raised the value of the house at all.
A good game will sell. No one was expecting GTA4 to be running at the highest resolution, and yet its one of the biggest selling games ever.

I think we should give HD some time to develope itself.

HD is fairly young, and in it's infancy when it comes to gaming. You can not expect to get the highest possible( 1080p) right out of the gate. Things like this take time.

Personaly, I think all this busness with HD resolution and X Pixals > X - 1 pixals = A good game. What happened to when a games reputation was based off of how fun it was?

Just remember that you can have just as much fun with wooden chess set as a diamond and golden one.

7.1 - Absolutely agree with you, Swiftfox!
People jump all over companies when a new technology comes out because they feel it should be used to its fullest potential right out of the gate (I blame this on the "instant gratification syndrome" everyone seems to suffer from in this day and age). Simply put, tech takes time. Anyone who thought every games on PS3 and Xbox360 would be running in full HD should have their head examined. It is not practical or even possible with most games as the space is best used to create a better experience, not just pretty backgrounds.

Another factor I think people don't take into account is that a lot of people don't own 1080p capable televisions yet. If, say, 15-20% of PS3 owners have a 1080p TV, is it really worth the effort on the part of a game developer to focus man power on creating something that only that small percentage of gamers can truly take advantage of? I think they have already answered with a big "No!".

I think you will see more high resolution games as these systems age and more people can make use of that tech, but until the install base of HDTVs becomes the standard, I wouldn't expect to see many that run at that high resolution.

8.1 - I care
If you've played COD4 on a PC running at 1920x1080 native with full AF and AA it blows the doors off the 360&PS3 versions upscaled to 1080p. Just the texture detail alone makes a big difference. I will admit that COD4 and Halo wouldn't looks that much different at native 720P. However, I think they need to drop the HD crap if they can't even meet the lowest HD spec.

well, this is interesting because i am waiting to hear from all the ps3 guys who were ripping 360 owners when it was revealed that the 360-exclusive Halo3 was running at sub 720p...now a ps3 exclusive is revealed to be running sub 720p and the comments are coming in as "well, as long as the game plays well, that's all i really care about".....

i think of all the games, Call of Duty 4 proved that numbers don't mean jack when it comes to developing games for either platform. it runs sub 720p, and is one of the best looking and best playing games out right now.

and what is the point to all of this? nothing, just like all those comments from the past that now look absolutely foolish from both sides when talking about console superiority based on what a game developer decided to set teh resolution at.....

There's no excuse for any game to not be running in HD this gen. That includes you, Wii.

If Polyphony Digital can squeeze 1080i out of the PS2 with Gran Turismo 4 and Tourist Trophy, people should be hitting 720p every time.

11 - Whats Bad Is
There are quite a few of these so called critics are crying about what a game is running at and this and that and dont even own Hd tvs and dont have an elite 360 and are using freakn component cables and crap.... give me a break you know who you are so shut up please. If the games look as good as do and run smoothly as cod4 and gears thats great news for the bulk of us. So kill the specification bull and enjoy!!!

When it comes to game resolution, I think that it really depends on the developer itself.

Uncharted Drakes Fortune runs at 720p on the Playstation 3, and any PS3 owner that has Uncharted will tell you that Uncharted's graphics totally blow away Grand Theft Auto 4's 720p graphics easily.

When you look at games like Killzone 2, Uncharted, GT5 Prologue, Resistance 2, etc... it's easy to see which developers are truly pushing the envelope when it comes to PS3 game development and game development in general. I think that a lot of 3rd party developers are getting a little lazy, but you've got to give kudos Infinity Ward for COD4 because they really stepped up to the plate when it comes to 3rd party development.

The only reason why a lot of previous 3rd party games on the PS3 suffered from the 360 versios is because those games were mostly just 360 ports. You cannot judge the PS3's potential by 3rd party Multiplatform games. You judge the PS3's potential by games like GT5 Prologue, Killzone 2, and Uncharted Drakes Fortune.

Uncharted BLOWS away GTA IV.

No comparison.

Except for the animation.

They're both using procedural animation, and that's one thing I love about both games.

how much more detail do you people want? I was scared enough with the amount of detail I have seen in GTA IV and now, I cant possibly imagine what detail everyone will be looking for in the next title other then much more realistic human figures

18 - Hd is just a gimmick
Just another way of drawing people in so they can steal even more money from people thinking it's special, and these so called high end systems can't even handle their own games at that level.

19 - No true HD yet but there is HD
what the guy that wrote the article did not realise is that 720P is better than 1080I so yeah we have high definition gaming but not crystal clear true High definition yet and even when games come out in 1080P native Im pretty sure that there will be better HD by then but you have remember that Grand turismo 5 will be native 1080P and I think it will run at 60 FPS and look better than the majority of games in the market so developers in my opinion use the we pull less than 720P to make it run better is just a copout(that they gave up) and if they really wanted they could spend more time on the game throgh PSN or Xbox Live and allow you to download it in real 1080P if they really wanted to but you know how it is they got it out on the market and made there dollar bills of it time for something else.
