Too Human: UE3 Transition Was Fantastic

The transition to its own engine after ditching Epic's "inadequate" Unreal Engine 3 has been "fantastic", says Too Human mastermind Dennis Dyack.

"We completely threw out the Unreal Engine and focused on something that would work for what we're doing, and it's been fantastic," said Dyack, speaking to CVG at Microsoft's spring showcase last week.

"...and focused on something that would work for what we're doing..."

That's what you are supposed to do. You are a developer, your job is to make code run on hardware. Nothing to brag about, imho.
Anyway, I hope the game is going to be really good. I have high hopes for it.

Insomniac uses their own engines and their games don't stay on development for that long! And their games are always great!

Silicon Knights may even be proud of their engine, but they should talk bad about UE3 just because they didn't know how to work with it.

2.3 - @ Bladestar:
Actually, I did some programming in my life. I am by no means a professional nor would I (or others for that matter ^^) call myself that. Yes, I know how hard programming is. You learn the syntax, the language itself, you write some pseudocode, try it, you make a mistake, you spend hours trying to find the error. Thousands, millions or even billions of lines. I know the feeling of relief, joy and a bit of proudness when your baby is up and running and performs as you wish, it's great. About that licensing and engine stuff you wrote: Yes, again, I know.
Yes, I bragged about stuff in my life, I do and i will continue to. Which doesn't mean that it's very important.
I adore those people, they spent their time to entertain us if nothing else. I even consider some games art, because nobody can tell me what Hideo Kojima or the guys behind Final Fantasy do is just fancy paperwork.
My point was that Silicon Knights had about 10 years to make this game. I don't even want to think about how many engines they had for that game. The thing is, I am quite sure they have a team dedicated to create this engine. My thought was: Why didn't they do this earlier? If they feel that the Unreal Engine 3 - or any other for that matter - doesn't deliver, why not take the time (come on, 10 years were enough) to make their own before the lawsuits and all that? That's why I quoted that bit, because I found it funny. Imagine them having meetings for 10 years and they are like:
"Is there any good engine yet for Too Human? - you know, we wait since six years..."
"Nope, sorry Bob."
Plus, personally I don't want to read news everytime a developer managed to get their games running.
But do I feel tiny yet? Sometimes I do, but I feel that with 180cm I am just average, so no problem there.

Now let me ask you something: Is it just my imagination or do you use those mysterious "..." a lot more often since the dead of the HD-DVD?
P.S.: If you don't mind, send me your answer (If you'd like to talk about that further, that is) in a PM because that way we don't take all the space for us and this is no forum.

2.4 - The point is
They licensed the UE3 engine without expecting to have to make their own engine. There's also the fact that they have a fair bit less as far as employees and resources go than insomniac

I'd be pretty damn proud if I was 1/2 done with a game, decided the engine I was using had poor support, and ended up making my own engine still in time for launch too.

well deserved. I wonder if they'll go back to UE3 or maybe idtech for the sequel or keep on their own engine. I just imagine the big engines would be better for resource use than anything else.

3 - thats
good for them, cause we have too many ue3 games as it is, graphics look pretty good, but the gameplay i seen in videos didnt seem to have a lot of variety to it, but you cant judge a game off of videos though

4 - "UE3 Transition Was Fantastic"
so what about that time you sued EPIC because you tought they where keeping tools from you?

and the four player Co-OP they was scrapth.

and the lame previews for the game.

No offence to SiliconKnights but this game has been in development for near 10 years and in all that tine I dont think it ever been seen as a amazing game by the press oor by most "gamers"

5.2 - I agree nickel
The game has had a troubled past, but it shows Silicon Knights commitment to quality that half way through development they realised that the Unreal Engine would not fulfill their vision as promised, so instead of shipping out a half baked game, they went through the arduous task of building their own engine from scratch to ensure their original vision.

Silicon Knights have a right to pat themselves on the back for that. And if having their own engine now means we'll see a Too Human trilogy much more quickly, as well as Eternal Darkness 2, then I'm all for it.

9 - Being in development for 10 years...
I would imagine that this isn't the first time the game has been moved to a different engine. Who made the engine it was on before UE3 was created???

I hope this new engine helps this games progress and makes it better than I had anticipated, but I remain skeptical.

10 - If someone would actually
investigate, the game has NOT been in development for 10 years. The idea was there and there had been some pre-production done on the PSone. They then became a Nintendo second part dev and had to work on other titles and this kept getting put to the back burner. Each time they wanted to work on it, other projects came up like Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear Twin Snakes.

Eternal Darkness even began life on the N64 but was moved over to the Gamecube because Nintendo wanted it there, to help sales of the new system.

Every game from PS3 that you cited has exceeded in something:

Killzone - amazing graphics/physics
HAZE - great story that separates it from other FPS
RFOM 2 - 60 multiplayer never seen on consoles
SOCOM - community multiplayer

Too Human so far only exceeded in its production time...

12.3 - O_o
Well, I don't think that Haze was ever advertised as being 1080p and running at 120fpm and I really don't think that you can honestly think that RFOM2 looks like "RFOM 1.00001b" or whatever. I understand that your kinda ticked that people are just trying to lynch Too human just because it's on the 360 instead of the PS3 but there is no reason for you to make up false insults just to try and get back at them.

As for bringing up Killzone 2 and its delays? Kinda like the pot calling the kettle black since Alan Wake was ALSO revealed in 2005 and it looks like it's being pushed back in to 2009 as well. At least Killzone has been getting updates lately....Alan Wake can't even claim that.

As for me? Too Human looks pretty good. All I've seen are videos and while I hold the opinion that it "could be better" thats only MY opinion and its an opinion only gathered from random videos on the net. Until I see the game in action I can't, nor should I, make a final decision.

In case you included me when you wrote haters:
I don't hate games, that would be silly, they don't do anything to me. Additionally, the chance of me playing this games are quite high. Because either it will be published by Microsoft for PC someday (don't know about that, though) or I will play it on an actual XBox360 since I intend to buy one as soon as I have enough money to spare (plus I NEED to play DOAX2, thats the only game I want to see go multiplatform).

12.5 - I don't care what console this is for but you have to admit
Taking 10 f***ing years to make a video game is ridiculous. Quit defending something just cause it for your console of choice.

As far as i'm concerned. Until i play it, color me unimpressed. They need to quit making damn excuses and make the fuking thing. Blaming Epic is just plain dumb when a RPG like Lost Oddessy using the Unreal engine looked way better than this oft delayed game.

Bottom line is they need to put up and shut up cause they have no room to talk.

First of this is a discussion about Too Human, and it would be fine to bring up other games if they were in the same genre, but i can`t see than any of the games you mentioned is.

And for the record, Too Human has missed several release dates, Killzone as not missed one, since GG or Sony has never said when it was going to be out.

Do Haze need to run at 120fps and 1080p ? Did Free Radical claim it would ?

RFOM2 looks like the first one ? See added video and read up on the game, because nothing of it seem like a "cheap" sequel.

Last i checked, the last SOCOM games was very good. It`s a new developer for this one, so we`ll wait and see, but it looks good.

I do agree with you on that people should leave Too Human alone, but why do you bash other games at the same time which dosn`t deserve it ?

i think the main problem with this game is the time that it took to develop, i mean 9 years in the making, across 3 different platforms. take this comment as u wish but the track record for these games that took soooooooo long to develop isn't exactly impressive.

Too Human is just what I need.
I kinda feel like it will be a breath of fresh air for me.
A different style of Gameplay than I am use to and with a very intriguing story line.

But as always to each their own.

yes, can't wait to see how they slaughter norse mythology. I've actually read Eddan, lol. Maybe It'll even be in the same category as God of War (awesome game, but it murdered greek mythology, in a great way tho).

The original game was starting development 10 years ago. This is a game/trilogy based off the same universe.

The original game was canceled twice. This is not the same game. Stop being ignorant.

Seems so simple to understand.

I wonder how many games you play today were pitched or thought up many years before they were ever made. Maybe even someone started on the code but the game just never got around to being made, or no one else would buy into the idea until that one day when someone did invest in it and it was made. The only difference between those games and this game is that people were actually interested in this story when the game was originally pitched but the dev (and the various publisher) never felt he could quite make it work (for one reason or another) until now. When the dev and their current publisher finially decided it was time for the game to be made they started it from scratch. AND THEN half way through the dev had to switch game engines, so for something that big I think a 3-4 year dev time is not so bad.

Although I still am of the opinion that SK is still using some UE3 code in their code and that was the reason for the lawsuite. A pre-emptive strike against Epic. Epic renegged on their support contract as far as SK is concerned... SK will be "stealing" "sections" of code as far as Epic is concerned. I would assume that SKs hope is that a deal is worked out between them.

I agree. People need to stop trashing games and consoles because they are following a general hatred for MS. People nowdays have no personal ideas and follow others blindly, like david koresh and michael travessar. I like the Xbox because it tailors to what I do and need. No sense to try to change my mind or flame me because I like a particular brand. Like some of the above posters, go cry over in the ps3 side and leave the 360 to those with 360's.
