Banjo 3 is 80% vehicles

Rare's head of design Gregg Mayles has revealed that approximately 80% of game time in Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts will be spent with vehicles.

"I would say around 80% vehicles, but just a rough guess. Banjo gets in and out of the vehicles all the time, but the travelling is done in the vehicles. A lot of the tasks require Banjo to get out and either do something to the vehicles, put something in the vehicles and so on," explained Mayles.

I guess your right, I shouldnt presume anything, I'll have to wait for some more hand-on/reviews.

I'm not actually a Banjo fan, but I'll buy this for my younger bro who enjoyed the previous ones (hence why I hope it doesn't change to much).

I loved the original Banjo on N64 and having seen the vehicles in Nuts & Bolts i was abit sceptical like you.But after reading all the previews i have no doubt in my mind that this game is going to be stellar.it is simply a breath of fresh air.

1.8 - I think everyone's missing the point.
Rare and all the previews have gushed about the potential of the user generated platforming.

Imagine Mario where you invented his powers (vehicles) instead of just picking up a feather and turning into a raccoon or a flower to get fireballs. All Banjo is doing is saying we're not going to decide the powers for you (flying, fireballs, etc) instead we're going to give you the tools (vehicle bits and pieces) and let you decide and create the powers (vehicles), so that you can progress through the game.

They're letting player creativity, rather than a designer's rigid rules, dominate the platforming. Or in other words 80% vehicles = 80% platforming.

To me that's close to genius.

the 360 doesn't have one good platform game, a missed opportunity just like perfect dark zero it will be a good game that could have been great.
what next rare killer instinct without combo's to make it feel fresh and new instead of what people want.

5.1 - The problem is the past banjo games were based more on platforming.....
This may be cool features for the game but 80% is alot of vehicle time spent instead of sticking to the platforming aspects which made this franchise big. For example it would be like mario galaxy but instead of putting all your effort to the whole single player expirience of just platforming elements, nintendo decided to add mario kart into the game and focus 80% on just building your vehicle, that would be a big bummer in my opinion. I think this is going to be a fun game but if your looking for a true platforming game, I think this isnt going to be the banjo alot of people expected from the past banjo games.

21 - Why is that vehicles =/= platforming? They aren't mutually exclusive!
Just because vehicles are involved doesn't mean the game isn't a platformer. What is the difference in walking around a world and driving there? A platformer has places to go, obstacles to overcome, tasks to complete, puzzles to solve, bad guys to pummel, etc. Why does the introduction of vehicles negate that it can be all platform. If Mario, for instance, in Mario World on the 64 (3D platform) had moved around on a device like Professor Xavier's little "hover craft" instead of on foot, would it have changed the overall game from being a platformer to a hovercraft game? Of course not. Yes, jumping mechanics would change but everything else would more or less be the same... Give the game a chance. I hate pure platformers so this looks like a fresh start for the series. I'll definitely be checking this one out...

I completely disagree with you.

A platformer, by its very definition involves being on foot and having to jump, grapple or climb to reach inaccessible places (platforms actually) and most usually involves the physics of jumping or grappling to deal with enemies.

Getting in a vehicle is not platforming AT ALL.

That doesn't mean it can't still be a good game, and indeed have many of the same quests and objectives you can find in a platformer. But it does mean that the underlying game mechanic and structure of the level is NOT a platformer - apart obviously from those bits of the level designed for access on foot.

I've worked with several high profile designers who could write entire papers on such a discussion point! but I'll limit myself to simply quoting the definition of a platformer from Wiki:

"Platform game, or platformer, is a video game genre characterized by jumping to and from suspended platforms or over obstacles. It must be possible to control these jumps and to fall from platforms or miss jumps. The most common unifying element to these games is a jump button; other jump mechanics include swinging from extendable arms, as in Ristar or Bionic Commando, or bouncing from springboards or trampolines, as in Alpha Waves. Games where jumping is automated completely, such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, fall outside of the genre."

End quote.

80% of Banjo is not a platformer - it involves no jumping..

It's really interesting reading your argument and observing the wtf reactions of many as it explains the Banjo conundrum perfectly.

Banjo does not appear to be a traditional platformer, and many seem to think it's not at all, but it actually fits the wiki definition you quoted. The vehicles are merely user created powerups, instead of designer enforced powerups like mushrooms and feathers in Mario. Banjo without a vehicle is just like Mario without a powerup, you can platform like that or you can go get a mushroom (vehicle) to make things easier or solve a particular platforming level.

If any of your high profile designer associates have played Banjo Kazooie 3 I'd be interested in their thoughts, because if you deconstruct BK3's design philosophy the only difference from previous installments is that the player determines the composition of the platforming powerups rather than the designer.

21.5 - @Superfragilistic
I can see the thrust of your argument but its simply does not work.

If the vehicles were used to 'jump to and from suspended platforms or over obstacles' then there would be some merit in your argument.
But they are not - the gameplay clips have shown this is the case.

Banjo is a vehicle based adventure game with some platform elements.

If the ratio were any different, say 80% platforming and 20% vehicles, then you could indeed use the power up analogy, but I've never played a platform game where the over riding game mechanic was over ridden for 80% of the game by power up with totally different gameplay mechanics.

There is absolutely no question that this is not a platform game - in the same way that many games that were originally platform games became adventures with platform elements.

I'm sure it will be fun no matter what 'genre' we want to call it, but the fact remains, that I like games where the main game mechanic is jumping and grabbing to reach new levels and platforms. I simply enjoy that and would have been happy to see something allot more like the earlier iterations of this franchise.
I'm sure what they have done will be excellent fun to - but I'll have to look elsewhere to feed my platform needs.
Doesn't mean it won't be fun, and I'm happy to

I guess we're in a stalemate then! lol

I see Banjo as an evolution of platforming as a genre.

You see it simply as an adventure, with some platforming elements.

I'll agree to disagree... until we get a much closer look at it ourselves.

Thanks for such a thoughtful and stimulating discussion, like N4G of old! Bubbles for you my friend. :)

I'll have to play this first hand to see if I'll like it... previews are looking and sounding good but I'm not too sure if I'll enjoy this game if it's 80% vehicles (for me personally)... if the choice is yours whether u choose to drive to your destination or walk and only need to create vehicles to reach and get by certain obstacles than that can change my opinion completely.

Graphically, the game looks good though =)

Personally I was looking forward to this game, but 80% and by reading the previews one can assume that this game is currently lacking dept. The whole vehicle creation and customization concept sounds pretty cool. Unfortunately people are going to compare this game with Ratchet and LBP and from what has been shown this game does lack in depth not to mention graphics.
