IGN: PS3's Project 8 Inferior to 360's Version

According to IGN, the PS3 version of Tony Hawk's Project 8 suffers from two key problems. First, as previously announced, the PS3 version lacks an online mode. However, more suprisingly, the PS3's Project 8 frequently grinds to halt. The game chugs and the framerate frequently drops to an unplayable 15 FPS.

To sum it up, IGN says "It's certainly disappointing that the PlayStation 3 is so far behind the Xbox 360 game. Framerate issues are apparent at every other turn, and the lack of online play really hurts. Project 8 is a worthy game to pick up, just preferably not on this system."

i doubt a bad ps3 is the case. it is that they didn't get the info to the developer in time to make the game as good as the 360 version and the developer is on a schedule to release both at the same time so some things must suffer in the ps3 version.

Repeat of the last generation power vs power wise. Sony added some plugs and a DVD player to counter the Inferior hardware. 6 - this is the kind of comparison I have been waiting for....

Now that the PS3 is here we can finally start getting REAL comparisons of power, graphics, etc... I am not saying 360 is way better, just that I think the truth is going to surface from honest reviewing now...and Sony Fanboys are going to eat some crow as they realize that their system is not the "All Mighty" that Sony has claimed it to be. They still are going to get good games but its not the great leap they had all been wet dreaming about for months now.

I could care less about this game because the majority of the genre is repetitive and boring (unless grouped with good friends) but let me ask a favor of you.

Could you please get in-depth detail about when the people developing this game for the XBox 360 started on a final dev kit and then do the same for the PS3. Then, program the game yourself to a complete version and tell me which was easier to program for and why. Then tell TheMART all of the final specs of the RSX chip so he'll quit whining about that and prove us all wrong! I double-dog dare you. =)

Until then, your opinion and everyoe's opinion on that means jack. You provided no physical evidence in your post so it is an assumption and cannot be reliable. How you even pulled that comparison out of your butt is beyond me, but it was good for a chuckle or two.

You do realize that the couple of games that look slightlty better on PS3 is due to the fact of HDMI and having months of extra dev time because of the late launch. #9 I'm sure dev's have learned everything theres to know about dev-ing on the 360. hehe. see i can chuckle with pity too.

i think this trend will continue for maybe a year. i do hate sony and laugh at all their decisions, but i dont think this is sony's fault and i would have to assume that in a years time when the "new" effect of the system is over both consoles will release the same quality in the games they both carry.

And we don't lose 264mb of hard drive space to make the game load faster, they said even though they did the cache the 360 still loaded faster. I have played THPS8 for about an hour last night on my 360, it does have some framerate issues, barely noticeable and all coming from a DVD and a $400 360, who would have thought the 360 would outshine the PS3 so early.

why some people,Sonyfans, always came with the escuse that ps3 dev´s have less time on the final dev kits for the games looks worst than Xbox 360 games. For me all the ps3 launch games are 3rd gen games and are all weak. They have the same or more time with the dev kits as the Xbox 360 dev´s and one entire year to improve because ps3 was suposed to sell in end 2005? First gen games.
That wasn´t suposed to sell spring 2006?
second gen games.
Now end 2006 ps3 ?will sell?

You obviously don't understand how the generations of games are determined. It is by dev kit time, always has been. The fact is that the ps3 dev kits weren't finished until August, so that's 3 months time with them. Gears had an extra year of time with the final dev kits, hence it being a second gen game.

By your logic and reasoning, Duke Nukem Forever could be released tomorrow for the ps2 and be a first generation game. That makes absolutely no sense.

Oops my bad, I must have misread the IGN article I was referencing. But still, the ps3 games had much less time on the final dev kits than 360 games. Plus this is the second 360 Tony Hawk, and the first ps3 Tony Hawk.

#17, I've been reading your post some more, and it appears obvious to me that you're some sort of fanboy, as evidenced by your fanboy logic (or illogic). Gears is first gen because it started being developed 2 years ago, however, all ps3 games are 3rd gen because they started being developed 2 years ago. There's not really much about THP:8 that "pushes" either one of these powerful consoles, so if this game is having framerate issues its most likely the dev's fault.....360 fanboys can't honestly believe that the graphic's in this game is too demanding for the PS3, but at the same time PS3 fans have got to stop making excuses like "its because they didn't have dev kits until late", you do know that majority of work can be done long before a dev gets the final dev kits, dev kits just allow the dev to tweak and fine tune and make the game better suited to the final hardware specs....if they put the effort in along time ago, then the game wouldn't have these issues or they should wait until its ready and passes strict QC inspections. If this game does have terrible framerate issues, then I think the bottom is this particular dev. dropped the ball on the PS3 version.

Well it could also mean that the 360 is just easier to develop than the ps3. This is not the first time something like this has happend. Call of Duty 3 is better on the 360. 30frames vs 60 frames. Games are being Delayed and cancelled. Makes me wonder whats really going on. Oh well, Going back to GOW :)

Developers are fleeing from the PS3 because it's so hard to develop for! Can't seem to find any published reports of droves of developers quitting their PS3 projects, but I totally believe you anyway! No matter if developers have had a year and half with Xbox360 hardware and only 3~5 months with final PS3 hardware. That's Sony's fault. They've should've rushed their hardware out like any respectable console maker and just patched that it up later on. ^_^

Everyone stop defending the consoles and just let everything take its course.

To the people laughing at TH8 performance - dont, its pointless - the devs more than likely messed it up and it should never have been released. They didnt have to release both at once.

To the ones saying 'oh look at resistance - its the best blah blah' - NO it isnt! Have you played it from start to finish? have you played it online? quit typing about some demo you might have played or some video footage that would more than likely have been doctored up to give sony props.

End result is, the PS3 is going to be very nice system and it is worth the money, hell you can even pop a linux cd in it and use it as a linux machinne. It's a good machine.

The xbox360 (i have two of them) is a rocking machine also, its well designed, runs great and has some dammed good games for it, and coming for it. It might not have a browser and might not boot linux but it has everything i want

I can't believe people are still claiming "PS3 devs have had more time than 360 devs" when final 360 hardware was released 15 months ago, and final PS3 hardware was FIRST released about 5 months ago. Apparently Neversoft didn't even have enough time with the final hardware/software to even implement online multiplayer. It's obvious that they rushed out the PS3 version since there is no online mode and there's some huge framerate problems. I think people forget that PS3 dev kits have Blu-ray burners, and what have we had shortages of? Blu-ray diodes. Sony's been struggling to get final SKUs and software to devs.

This has nothing to do with hardware capabilities. It just shows what happens when software is rushed out the door, and it's regretful that Neversoft did this.

This happened before on Dead or Alive for the PS2 verses the Dreamcast version. The Dreamcast version was superior but we all Know what happened in the end. Its just a result of not enough time for them to understand PS3's unique architecture. As for those who question the GPU performance where was those questions on Fight Night Round 3 for PS3 vs 360's. Time is what made the difference there and its the same thing here. Even if they were developed at the same time (which I'm not so sure about) developers have already expressed how difficult it is to learn the cell processor so they need more time to learn it as opposed to the 360 which has architecture that is more familiar. even the easy to develop for 360 had a few games with frame rate issues because they needed more time to learn it(360's oblivion frame rates aren't as solid as the PC version) but does that mean the system or the GPU is weak? Oh well, I guess it still is a good cheap shot for 360 fans.

What I don't get is that the PS3 was suppose to be released in spring 06, but it was pulled at the last minute. So exactly what games was suppose to be released at that time assuming that final devs were out 5 months ago? The excuse was that there wasn't enough diodes or hardware parts for the PS3... never once stating any problems about software development.

actually stated that they only had 9 months to build the PS3 engine from scratch, which makes sense considering that only 1/9th of the Cell architecture shares anything with the 360's CPU. A straight up port wouldn't have worked.
