Xbox '540' coming in 2009?

TSMC plans to begin producing the Valhalla chip, which will be the foundation of the mid-cycle refresh of the Xbox 360, thus called 'Xbox 2.5' or simply 'Xbox 540' (360+180), in fall of 2009. We learned that this new chip is apparently much more than a die-shrink and end up as a system-on-a-chip design. This change is likely to enable to redesign the Xbox 360 casing and go towards a slim-design, much like what Sony did with the Gen1 and Gen2 PS2. TG Daily believes that TSMC will use a 45 nm process for this Multi-Chip-Module package (CPU+GPU+eDRAM).

Headline is rather misleading. Basically its a rumour that the smaller die sets will allow them to change the case design. Perhaps to a slimmer model.

Very misleading. I am once again baffled by the logic here though. Instead of worrying about making it more compact they need to worry about the failure rates; once again they have taken their eyes off the ball.

A little fun fact about N4G I always noticed - you can easily spot a misleading headline by articles that are hot (ie, viewed a lot) but have few-to-no comments.

People see the article and go "OH! Interesting" then click on it and realize it's not at all what the headline implied, then sadly go "Oh..." and move on without commenting.

A 45nm process will not only make the processor smaller, but also cooler. Hopefully this will fix any failures due to overheating.

I could care less about system failure, I just wish the damn thing would stop scratching my disks so I can't sell them.

If they make the case smaller and still have a huge power brick I will mock them without mercy!

Seriously, it would be better if they kept it the same size and integrated the power supply, but - if they are doing this - I would imagine they would rather just reduce the case for marketing reasons.

1.7 - If the smaller die does make it cooler...
...I may consider buying the 360. Then again it should have been 'cooler' (non-RROD) from the start.

It makes me wonder if to just wait for the next Xbox (720).

2.1 - Jasper
Is all you need - the reduction to the 65 nm feature size for both the CPU and GPU (along with the reduced heat) will permanently solve heating problems. I am waiting to pick up a second 360 until that happens (I also want a price cut and a quieter DVD drive). The whole bluray drive thing is interesting - would easily make an Elite module truly elite - but I don't see that happening as MS seems more interested in downloading. Still, if a add-on ever comes out I may pick it up as I still need to get a bluray and I refuse to pay more than $200 for a player - especially when the movies are priced at $25-35.

2.2 - Probably not this gen
I think we may see some interesting future tech on the next gen platforms, but it may be possible to really shrink these suckers down into a tight space using Thermal Acoustic Piezo Energy Conversion for cooling and better energy efficiency even on this gen equipment.

4.1 - ok
1) Changing the chipsets to a cooler unit IS working towards fixing the RROD issue.

2) sony didn't patent slim redesigns. most electronics get smaller as time goes to be more cost effective.

why just look at televisions.

seriously. stop with the fanboy dribble.

Uh Microsoft do NOT make a slimmer 360, lol you can't even make a large one not overheat, your best bet is to NOT change the design.

Actually, changing the design would probably be for the best, reliability wise - *IF* they actually properly test it this time to make sure it doesn't IMPLODE after 6 months.

8 - The hardware is already reliable
Go buy a 360 now and it will have a Falcon i.e. 65nm CPU, I have had only 1 rrod that was on my launch console within the first few months after that I have NEVER had any issues with rrod or disc scratching or anything.
Like people say those that have no issues are not going to come up and say 'Hey I have a perfect one!'

Its a known fact and logic that people will say something when there is an issue, since the rrod issue has died away I think people should now move on an stop flogging a dead donkey.

I had a PS3 and it had a problem and I took it back but you dont see me or others coming on here whining on their PS3 problems.

Elite Falcon....It's not like all the consoles have issues. I could understand the early one from a certain date...

Anyhow this will only make people wait for the new ones which come out just in time for Gears of War 2 and holiday push.

Falcon was 65nm CPU but still has 90nm GPU. The boards this summer are 65nm CPU and GPU. The Valhalla boards will be 45nm on a single chip enabling them to theoretically shrink the case with a new cooling solution.

11.1 - I was thinking the same thing
One of the major problems in the original launch units was improper ventilation for the GPU, and also it's placement under the CD drive.

Chances are with the die shrink and new placement on the board it wold keep failures within the expected ranges.

Why would Microsoft do a redesign and keep the architecture the same way that would end up costing them even more money for repairs? It doesn't take an engineer to realize the obvious.

Working towards what they can't achieve. 2/3s of more of the Xbox's out there already have the infamous 33% failure rate. Recent statistics brought us to believe that more recent model with the Falcon mobo's those failure rates are around 16% Even with the implementation of Jasper it is too late. At least 1/3 of all Xbox 360's are destined to fail. Even 8, 9 or 10% failure rate is too high. There's no way you can spin this. Microsofts hardware Q&A is a technical nightmare. I'm not hating on the Games Xbox 360 has, but the hardware is below standard.

You could argue all day that they got cut off the problem at the source, that doesn't make it fact.

I dont think a redesign for a slimline model is underway:

1) They will have to somehow rethink their precise cut-Harddrive which are formed to fit original model... unless they keep that the same (although that might look fugly).

2) Faceplates... how on earth would a slim-line work with these things if its half the width.

3) Xbox 360 is already slim enough... It certainly is no PStwo, but it is a far cry from an original Xbox. The width isnt really that big, and its not taking up much room.

12.2 - Yea
I definetly dont think they are going to make a slimmer 360 when they cant even get the 1s out to shut up. I thought my friend had on his air conditioner in the winter while he was playing his 360. They also cant get them to stop overheating if you cant even put your console on the carpet then there is something wrong.

12.3 - re: hitman
It is the darn DVD drive - way too loud. I think that is probably the biggest reason the XBOX 360 hasn't sold well in Japan (the RROD issues didn't help either). If you live in a small apartment place and your console is making a lot of noise then you might just go crazy. My solution is to use headphones - I can crank the volume without waking up the kids and I don't hear the DVD drive.

12.4 - Design change.....
Most likely a slim model using upgradeable flash drive technology for storage. Perhaps MS will keep the current external hard drives at the same embarrassing high price and then phase in the flash drives at the current price, thus making it look like a good deal?

12.5 - @ Hard drive too big
If they redesign a slim 360, they'd probably redesign the hard drive. Maybe switch it to a solid state, or some sort of vertical drive. They might start producing 2 kinds of hard drives, or they might just release an adapter to plug in new hard drives to old 360s, or design the new 360 with the old hard drive in mind.

There's plenty of ways to work around the hard drive, and they have a whole year to get there.

13 - Guys please
There are no issues now, go get a 360 and enjoy its getting really old now.
In all the time people have slagged off the 360 they have missed out on some pretty awesome games. Play.com have premiums with GTA 4 for only £199.99 bargain if you ask me.

With the newer chip set 360's its inevitable, look at the PS1 and PS2 they got smaller because technology stands around for no one.

I am sure like me there are many 360 gamers out there that will probably buy a PS3 in the future, and if there are PS3 gamers out there that are looking to get a 360 later on then great stuff.
The only people that lose out are fanboys, too buys slating and slagging off a product when they could just be enjoying what these products are supposed to do and that is to provide entertainment.

14 - AGREE...
...that shrinking the CPU and then the GPU and eventually shrinking both further together on the same chip is much more cooling and efficient, therefore reducing greatly RRoD. This really isn't a fanboy issue, although it's fair to question MS hardware after RRoD. Still, if this works out, it goes a long way towards continued MS profit on the 360, as well as cheaper, more efficient (slimmer?) consoles to keep the 360 around and relevant a lot longer. Well, at least until 2011 or 2012. Question is, will all of these lowered production costs pave the way for a Blu-ray enabled 360? You make the call....

An appearance change would be a welcome advantage from a consumer psychological viewpoint. The 360 is paired with the RROD from all but the most casual and uninformed buyers. Just changing internal chips may be helpful, but may not sway people into believing it. Plus, it isn't trivial for someone to know if they have the newer chipset if the outside looks the same. A new redesign would go a long way to giving consumers confidence that the RROD is behind them. That is of course if the problems do go away with the changes. If the problems still persist with a new design after MS has had 3 years to fix it, you could probably start shoveling dirt on that corpse.

15.1 - exactly
a new redesign would bring a new boost to microsoft's image.

it would make people think "hey this is a new thing" and promote new players to try the xbox brand that were previously skepticle.

it might even cause a small stir in japan, where anything redesigned gets a huge boost in sales for a while.

nothing world breaking, but it might give 360 sales a rather nice initiative in HW sales charts.

That title is misleading as HELL, and why in the world would a redesigned 360 be called a Xbox 540? That's just STUPID. If the Xbox doesn't have built in Blu-Ray ( it won't have it) then there is no need for a new name.

The Xbox 360 Blu-ray rumors are just funny because there is no way Microsoft is going to start using Blu-Ray DVD discs for Xbox games because it's too late for that. Unless Microsoft plans on shipping out Free 360's with built in Blu-Ray, there's no way that a 360 with built in Blu-ray will work. The PS3 will be the only game console this generation with built in Blu-Ray, sorry Microsoft, you dropped the ball when it came to the disc format.
