TGR: Race Driver: GRID Demo Impressions

Via TheGameReviews.com

"Race Driver: GRID is the latest racing game from Codemasters, developers of the critically acclaimed Colin McRae and TOCA Touring Car series. GRID is, in fact, based on the TOCA games, so it's easy to see the influence. Powered by Codemasters very own Ego engine, a modified version of the Neon engine behind Colin McRae: DIRT on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 last year, it promises superb graphics and physics that could be a likely contender to have the best visuals for any racing game to date."

Agreed. Definitly a must buy. I'm no fan of simulators but these guys made DiRT which I liked and plus, the game looks insane and I can never resist a racing game with big crashes.
Crashing here is deadly :( (Burnout FTW!) But still, the game looks seriously promising.

Codemasters are one of the most underacted Racing game developers. Have always pushed the envelope of the racing genre so many great racing titles have come from them in the last ten year and GRID is another great example of how well they do racing games. Loved the demo, can't wait to get the full game.

2 - Loved the demo..
I have never been so hooked to a 'demo'. The game is just truly amazing, crashes feel awesome. I just hope they fix major bugs(PS3 version) in online mode when final game comes out.

3 - For me, GRID is a crap!
I don't know what you like guys in this game. Steering sucks, and game have nothing in common with old TOCA's

I think this game should be called Destruction Derby rather that TOCA.

For me it's medicore game, 6/10 maybe 7/10.

Are you sure you are judging it as an arcade-sim racer which it's actually supposed to be?

3.2 - To be fair...
...car physics and handling could be tightened a little. Other than that, this game is the most fun I've had since playing Motorstorm.

Oh yes, at least it has real on-line play - unlike what they tried to do with DiRT.

i'm trying really hard to like GRID but realizing that it is an arcade racer (nothing can touch GT5P with my Logitech G25) but even when compared to Burnout Paradise, the steering seems a little off. It's either a touch oversensitive or under-sensitive and there's no feedback on the Dualshock 3. Hopefully, Codemaster will improve the handling and the physics before the release and provide those with PS3 a little bit more feedback on their DS3.

Quaz is already saying it's more complex and realistic on the PS3 version.

6 - Terrible preview!
Having spent time with the GRID demo and GT5 I can say from first hand that the graphics and control of this game are very weak. I can't believe that the reviewer actually thinks that GRID graphics are on par with GT5. Notice he never actually mentions GT5 but claims that GRID graphics are above the rest, blind reviewer. Get GT5 if you want a real race simulator with graphics that are better than anything on any system.

I am completely addicted to this demo.

For all of those that say the handling is too sensitive, just continue to play the game and you will get used to the sensitivity. That's when the game gets really fun. You are able to go balls-out, but you know that one wrong move will send you off the track.

Also, I only use the "hood" camera, it's the best looking view (IMO) and it makes it easier to drive.

Again, an awesome game when you get used to the handling!
Can't wait to buy the full version.

*Edit to add that I'm playing the Xbox 360 version.

I liked the PS3 trying to be PS2 type graphics but the steering finally made me turn it off.
The sensitivity was weird, like you're partially in control but not, depending on how the game felt.
Getting hit off line and then struggling to control the car back to normality.

Thumbs down so far but if they sorted the steering out I'd be interested in it, I want to like it.

I am a huge sim driving fan, Forza and GT are the main reason for owning a console but i don`t mind a bit of arcade racer every now and then, with PGR4 being the king of arcades. But arcade racers must have satisfactory car physics and Grid is missing that big time and for that reason i won`t get this. I`ll see what Ferrari Challenge has to offer, and if it does`t live up to my standards then i`ll keep on playing Prologue and Forza2 until GT5 or Forza3 comes out.

12 - It was okay..
I like Grid for the crash physics AND the replay that let's you see the crash happen in slow motion and from many angles. Other than that, Gran Tursimo 5 prologue has made life very very hard for other raceing game developers. The graphics in Grid are no match for GT5. Less detailed cars, hazy filtered look to the game with hazy backgrounds. Very different from the super detailed cars and crystal clear backgrounds in GT5:P. The biggest gripe is that the handling is a lot more NFS and the realism in GT5:P. It actually made me appreciate GT5:P even more! I might get GRID but it will depend on what other features the game has and what the car line-up is. I'll probably spend the most time enjoying the crashes :-)

Once again the cars have no sense of weight.

very poor handling, graphics are ok, crashes are cool (except for the stupid flashback feature)

14 - Why
Every time we talk about any racing game everybody say GT5 GT5 GT5 GT5
who said GRID is a simulator.

14.1 - GT5:P has set the bar
The only reason a lot of people talk about GT5:P as soon as any other racing game is mentioned is because GT5:P has set a new very high benchmark standard. While GT5 may be simulation versus GRID's arcade, you just notice that the graphics aren't as good, car's aren't as detailed, etc. However, this doesn't mean you won't have fun playing it. I just might get GRID if there are enough interesting cars and tracks in it. If anything just to see that awesome damage replay.

15 - Reasonable
Although GRID has some supurb visuals, i don't believe them to be as good as GT5P. Although some scenery visuals do look amazing. Car models don't come close to GT5.

The cars handling is rather interesting and didnt take long to master after a few races. I tried it with no assists, manual transmission and it still felt arcade like (which i know its supposed to be) and too easy to race around. I was expecting, like GT5P, a wide variety of handling differences from arcade to solid simulation.

Despite the arcade racing feeling, its still a reasonable game to play. Learn to adjust to GRIDs handling and you do have some decent races. Online (only tried 360 at the mo) is ok, although i have had some bumper car type races with rough players. The full vehicle damage is impressive, effecting many areas of the vehicle.
Simple drive head on at 100mph into a wall, you are wrecked, better than Burnout Style vehicle damage physics making it very believable.

Ive never been a fan of drifting, but theres also a points based event based on drifting.

I think Codemasters are concentrating too much on simple handling. I miss the golden Colin Mcrae Rally 2/3/2007 games, top handling, its all seem to have vanished in their current gen games.

GRID almost feels it could be compared with PGR4 based on car handling, which fails to better Bizarres game.
