Rumor: Microsoft May Debut New Xbox 360 Motion Controller Next Week

Rumors about Microsoft entering the waggle market with a specialized, Wii Remote concept swiping controller have been popping up for the better part of a year. Talk of a partnership with Gyration, speculation that Bungie had quashed a proposal for a motion controller tied to Halo 3 and murmurs that Rare was now tasked with leading the waggle wand brigade have been bubbling up rather consistently.

2 - Why on Earth
Are Microsoft bothering with this tech this late into their consoles life?

If they REALLY think Nintendo's success with the Wii is primarily due to the Wiimote, then they are truly in for a surprise

Are you kidding? If MS brings Newton to market, it will be a 2nd, almost as large (and more eager to buy 3rd party titles) audience to 3rd party Wii developers.

Anything that can run on Wii can easily run on Xbox 360. No one thinks that serious games (AAA hardcore titles) can be controlled by Newton/Wiimote (it just doesnt work without buttons and sticks..)

Im thinking we're going to see it soon - and its going to deliver a massive shift in the marketplace. Only the Xbox 360 is going to compete with PS3 and Wii. But Wii will not compete with PS3 and vice-versa.

2.2 - No,I'm not
Tell me something: Do you HONESTLY believe that Microsoft can shed the Xbox 360s hardcore image due to the introduction of a new controller, almost 3 years into it's life?If you do,then you're not looking at this issue from a consumers standpoint.

Let me state this as clear as possible:The number of people who buy the Xbox 360 for games such as Viva Pinata absolutely PALES in comparison to the number of people who buy the console for games such as Halo and Gears of War.Look at the numbers:What are the top 3 selling Xbox 360 games?Halo 3,Gears of War,and Cod 4.Notice anything similar between this titles? All Shooters, all geared toward hardcore gamers, and all known to be THE games to own if you're going to be playing on Xbox Live. What are the top 3 selling Wii games?Wii Sports,Wii Play, and Mario Galaxy.Notice how neither of these games have Guns in them.

You can not dispute this fact:The Xbox 360 has NEVER been known as a Casual gamers console, nor has it been known as 'that console you switch on when you and your family get together to play a game'.It is simply NOT a console that promotes family gaming, even though Microsoft have indeed tried to push the 'family' image, and to little success at that.Don't believe me?Look at Scene It's sales, then look at Gears Of War's sales. It's equivalent to Night and Day.

To claim the introduction of this new Motion Controller will magically put it in direct competition with the Wii and shift the market,is absolutely ridiculous.

2.3 - Appearantly you are one of those ppl...
That doesnt make up their own mind. Someone has to tell you thata system is casual or family based. All those terms are decoy terms to stop ppl from using their own judgement. You say 360 cant shed its image as a hardcore console. Image is nothing taste is everything or in video games place feeling is everthing. I'm not talking love and saddness i'm talkin physical touch. If MS delivers a Wii style controller that does what the Wii does equal or better what ppl think wont come to matter. You will have Wii boxing and Hi def internet enabled boxing leagues accross the 360 with realistic graphics and voice chat. It speaks for itself.

"Image is nothing"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

The moment you understand why Corporations invest hundreds of Millions of Dollars into Marketing,is the same moment you'll realize why it is too late for Microsoft to shed it's hardcore image associated with it's Xbox brand. And you'll also realize why it is too late to attract an entirely new market due to 1 peripheral that is NOT even THE standard form of Input for it's video game console, that ironically, has less than 5% of games for the target audience of the 'newton' motion controller.

"You will have Wii boxing and Hi def internet enabled boxing leagues accross the 360 with realistic graphics and voice chat."

So you think a 40-something year old mother and her 6 year old daughter care about playing Boxing matches with the best graphics available in Hi-Def?Signing up for Tournaments and keeping track of their stats?

2.6 - I don't know about image but
price and games matter. If you can get the waggle controller along with some cool game for a reasonable price then it will probably sell halfway decently (several million at least). Golf fans would flock to it (the Wii graphics looks so child-like - cannot see how anyone can stand it). How hard would it be to allow use of the waggle for some arcade games?

I think it is a decent idea - look at the success of Rock Band and Guitar Hero. All you need is the right game and you are business. And a RTS might be more fun if you have a waggle controller - it would be more mouse like when you try to select units. Could be a major deal. But even if it only sells a couple million that would be a success. And I know I would pick something like that over the Wii any day (mutters about overpriced gamecube)...

If you think the wii popularity is not from the wiimote then you are sadly mistaken. Do you think for 1 sec that if the wii didn't come with that controller that it would have sold half as much, NO WAY. Show me a wii with a normal controller and i would have said gamecube and it would have probably flopped worse than the gamecube just cause of the fact. In order to create buzz or getting people excited about your product is by showing them what you are bringing to the table and it would have been nothing if it wasn't for the wii remote.

Unless you are a Flash and Silverlight developer, then I really doubt you know what you are talking about.

Mac OS > Vista
Okay, I'll give you Vista can be a headache. Throw in XP up there and then switch your arrow the other way. Plus, Mac OS is fine, but nothing super duper awesome. I'd call this one even.

It looks very promising. I hope MS does bring this Newton to market.

3rd Party Motion-control developers are going to *love* having another market to deliver its games. As a result, motion-control games will get more investment.

Its not like motion-control games are going to replace proper button-and-sticks controlled games (it just doesnt work because of physiology)...

If MS delivers the Newton, its a win-win for everyone.

The day this site returns to its roots and abandons this fanboy crap the better.

This decision to go motion controlled is purely business based, not game based like so many would like to believe. The strongest selling point for the 360 up to this moment has been it's huge software range (now nearing 1000 titles), you rightly point out that motion control capabilities would immediately open up an avenue for third parties to publish on more than one platform, which in turn will see an even greater software range and diversity on MS system. EA, THQ and Ubisoft have all shown a renewed interest in this section of the market and would strongly back the move.

What would be interesting is if the attach rates of these titles on the 360 outstrip the Wii we may see the ironic development of motion focused developers moving towards the 360 as the lead platform and porting or abandoning the Wii. Currently this seems unlikely, but it is within the realm of possibility.

But the key driver to all this is as evidenced by the strongly aligned voices in these forums, the hardcore are already locked up. They either have a PS3 or a 360 and believe in that system alone (although occasionally they have both). Meanwhile the Wii has the casual market all to itself, and that is growing at a rate that greatly outstrips both systems.

Microsoft and Sony would be crazy to ignore the casual market... and that's why increasingly they're not. All we're seeing is different market strategies to capture part of this market. Microsoft appears to believe in developing motion control peripherals, Sony is clearly more interested in pushing casual software titles like Buzz and Singstar.

Neither method has been proven in this generation, but Sony's push in casual software is certainly the far less risky option. Microsoft are taking a large but calculated risk, that will either succeed beyond everyone's expectations and ride the waggle euphoria of the casual masses or will fail miserably but leave their share of the hardcore intact. Only time will tell.

8 - If you think that by coping the Wii and it's contoller,
you'll suddenly be marketable to the casual market; well I think you'll find yourself mistaken. The Wii sells for more reasons than just a funny controller. How about you worry about reducing costs and making games. 360 is not perceived as a casual console and wasting money a waggle controller won't change that.

Oh, and leave Rare alone, let them make games and not have them worring about pushing useless concept controller crap.

That is pretty silly.

Some games will be waggle. The games that are *meant* to be Newton controlled will-be. The market has room for both.

Unfortunatley, my comment above has been nuked by the sony-loyal; but what is going to happen here? 3rd Party Wii developers are going to *FLOCK* to this Newton. Without a doubt. All those low-attach rate wii owners are going to get the Xbox 360 owners supporting the quality of their games.

It would be interesting if Banjo Kazooie did this to drop a nuke on Wii this Saturnalia.

I'm just loyal to intelligence. Take that as you will. But why bother wasting time and money developing a 360 game when you can spend a quarter of the money on a PS2 port to the Wii and shoehorn in motion controls?

How many 3rd party games for the Wii do you really want to see on the 360. I just can't see 3rd party developers wanting to spend money and waste time porting game to the 360 just because some new controller is out. Companies have the right to do what they want, but this is one that MS should just stay out of.

It's true...

The thing is...consumers are idiots. I see it every single day at Gamestop. People buy Iron Man. People buy Wii Fit. People bought Gamecubes...(see my point?)

I try to warn them as much as possible.

This dude wanted to get LOST: Via Domus the other day...so, I told him it was rather disappointing...especially if you're a fan of the show. He got Uncharted instead. Yeah, that was a close one. I'm glad he'll be enjoying his life now though.

Consumers never put ANY time into what they're going to buy unless they're highly intellectual human beings. There aren't many of them these days. You know, the British are quite intellectual. The British also buy PS3's. Is there a pattern there? I think so.

Look how well the Wii sold. Consumers don't even KNOW that they won't play it after the first week. They buy it without thinking.

Trust me...they'll buy anything that's marketed well enough. If the name Mario is attached to something...it will sell.

its funny because mostly everyone who has posted thinks that a motion controller from MS is a bad idea....but why is it?

Most likely when the next gen does come around dont you think MS should have an idea about implementing motion controllers?? Personally I think they should have both the motion sensing controllers and the normal 360 controllers based on the type of games people want to play.

But anyway back to the topic...with more powerful machines they could actually make motion sensing games that are more intense and may appeal to a large crowd of people as well as possibly the Wii market....even tho it may be to late this gen....2 or 3 years down the road it could be the perfect idea to add as a feature with their next system.....so its more of a look into the future instead of so called act of desperation some may say.....

Think of it kinda like the ps3 with the six axis...stupid idea and now they know....but it wont be their last attempt at using motion controls either....just a stepping stone into the future of gaming

The problem with MS trying to release this kind of motion control for they're system, is because it was never part of the core experience from the 360 to begin with. When people hear "Video game system with motion controls" they are going to automatically think Wii.

Now I'm not saying that this will be or not be a success on MS's end, but they sure don't have an identity of what they're console is doing for the consumers anymore. The 360 was known as the hardcore gamer's machine, and guess what. It attracted a lot of hardcore gamers. But it's going to stoop down to "Hardcore gamer's machine, but with motion controls for the casuals."

18.1 - My problem with six axis is that it is a poor representation of what motion controls should be.
The wii mote/nun chuk work well accurate and precise enough to not inhibit gameplay.

The six axis on the other hand is pretty poor to use for anything but shaking fire off in resistance. to imprecise which is why the lair controls got slated.

Thats what happens when you try to tack some thing on in at the last moment.
