Grand Theft Auto IV On Xbox 360 Outsells PS3 Version Since UK Release

Gamers have voted with their wallets, and the results are in. The Xbox 360 version of "Grand Theft Auto IV" has sold more than 100,000 copies, or 20%, more than the PLAYSTATION 3 version in the UK since the game's release last Tuesday, 29th April. The groundbreaking latest instalment in the Grand Theft Auto franchise from Rockstar Games offers seamless multiplayer enhanced by Xbox LIVE plus exclusive downloadable episodes coming this Autumn, making Xbox 360 the best way to experience this historic milestone in gaming.

Data released by ELSPA/Chart-Track shows Xbox 360 Week One sales at 514,000 copies sold in the UK. PLAYSTATION 3 version of the game sold only 413,000 copies, clearly demonstrating that gamers prefer the Xbox 360 version. Xbox 360 console sales jumped 125% reflecting the popularity of this franchise on the platform. Initial feedback from retail in other European countries reflects this great performance across the region.

What this article and MS ignore is the fact that in the UK 1 in 4 Xbox 360 owners bought GTAIV. But 1 in 3 PS3 owners bought GTAIV. MS should be ashamed. The PS3 buy rate is higher.

Why should they be ashame of making 6 million dollars more money by selling 100,000 more copies. You guys don't get it, it's about the money, not some stupid 1 in 3 vs 1 in 4 ratio.

If that's they case you should NEVER speak of the PS2 doing anything ever again. Because look at the ratio it has have and the headstart.

additionally, look at Japan. The PS3's install base is about 2.1 million and the 360s is 600K. Yet they have sold 115,441 copies of rainbow 6 vegas on the ps3 and 80,092 on the 360. Now, should Sony be ashamed of this? especially in it home territory? Does that not make the 360 buy rate for this title EXTREMELY higher? And if that's so important, why is it being ignored? NO Sony should not be ashamed, because it means nothing. It's all about the cash.

The ratios are just marketing tools to keep the fanboys arguing.

uxo22, let me see if I understand your brilliant math. Microsoft made 6 million more dollars after spending 50 million on DLC to boost sales. Let's examine the smarts involved in that brilliant marketing move.

I think it's time for Microsoft to get rid of the advertising and strategy firm of Howard, Fine, and Howard.

And by the way, fewer copies of R6 sold because most PS3 owners know that game wasn't worth the plastic on which it is recorded.

It is pretty obvious that when more people per console ratio bought GTAIV, there is loyalty there. The biggest jump will come between now and June 12th as PS2 owners begin their switch to PS3. It will be interesting to see the Sony figures since Sony counts consoles sold and not consoles shipped in the manner of MS.

EDIT: I also picked it up for the PS3. Every dual console owner I know personally did likewise. Of course they are all like me - well past their 1st 360.

I have to agree. Who gives a rats A!! about which console is selling more copies. The game has sold phenomenal, is a GREAT title... I'm just happy to see games get bought!! Too many games don't sell nearly as many copies as they should. Enough with this crap about sales figures. And to boot we had to see an article disputing GTA IV sales as the dominate entertainment seller because Halo 3 sold more copies than the 360 version of GTA IV so it should still hold the crown? No I am not talking smack. If MS doesn't see a boost in sales now it won't happen later. Come September/October time frame, no one that doesn't already have GTAIV is going to give 2 flips about DLC. SO for it to be a benefit, MS had to see a huge boost now. If it didn't come in the first week, it isn't coming. Now MS is going to have to charge for the DLC to make money back later this year. Ha, it just shows how desperate they're getting when they crow about a 100K lead in software.

I said before it even when on sale and I stick by it, with all the money they threw at R*, all the advertising Blitzes, all the mud they flung and as much as they talked up GTA on XB and talked down GTA on PS3 if they didn't sell at least 2:1 minimum with their precious superior userbase, online service and DLC, then it would be a slap in the face for M$ and seen as a failure of Epic proportions.

Sorry but PS3 has done really well and the area that actually matters, HARDWARE, PS3 is kicking serious arse. Who cares who sold more copies? Yeah its money but this is about who'se gonna be the dominate console for the next 5 years, and for PS3 growing the userbase. For course everyone with an Xbox and a PS3 is gonna get GTA and that means more for M$, but its the people without consoles that are buying a PS3 to play GTA and MGS4 around the corner that are going to be the decider's. Dont believe me? Its already happening, and all M$ can do is crow about 100K games, while Sony crows about 100K consoles.

Why do you think GTA4 is smaller than San Andreas with no Planes, less vehicles, no jet pack. Why do they even need DLC unless they couldn't fit it on the disc. How come PS3 has some texures pop in (like every GTA game, as well as every Unreal game on Xbox) while XBox has whole buildings and trees popping in.

Bottomline, why is R* CHOOSING PS3 for future products so as not to be restricted by shortsighted hardware limitations which were only done to saved a couple bucks 2 year and a half years ago but are just a nuisance now, much like yourself.

Don't forget about the small minority of people who bought both versions like me. I had to buy the 360 one to play with my brother online because he has a 360, but I bought a PS3 special edition because I wanted to play the superior version completely through. Screw achievements, they just make me angry because I am a perfectionist. I will probably check out the DLC for 360, but I will definitely get it for PS3. At the end of the day, PS3 will sell more copies of GTA4.

*I Just saw a GTA4 commercial on Adult Swim and the funny part about it was that it only said "playstation 3" at the bottom of the screen. No mention of it being available for 360. MS better step up to the plate, or they are gonna lose a lot of sales just because of advertising.

that doesnt make sense.

Xbox 360 is already doomed in Japan and struggling in Europe.
Sony doing brilliantly with PSP, PS2 and PS3.

Sony doesnt have to rely on GTA4 to save a day. They have MGS4, Killzone 2, LBP, Haze, HOME etc etc etc.

Microsoft got GTA4 and .... nothing exciting coming up.
Maybe Midtown Madness is the answer.

You do know this game was infact ported from 360 to ps3. I've already spoken to a few ppl in the know about this and they confirmed it.

So then i spoke to them about KIllZONE 2.

They all agreed it's the best looking game they've ever seen on console or pc. Now that's some feat.

I then asked about killzone 2's res aa af etc.

Its pushing. 1280x720p, x4aa 8xaf.

and using soft shadows.
