GTA IV Version Wars II: The Graphics

Since it's difficult to compare the specs of the PS3 and Xbox 360 directly, multiplatform games like GTA IV are commonly used to gauge the relative strengths of the two systems. The Exploding Barrel has spent a week with both versions of Rockstar's amazing new sandbox title, and has noticed a handful of graphical differences that may be of interest to discerning shoppers who want to know which version to buy… or fanboys who simply crave fodder for bashing rival hardware.

The article focuses on differences between how the Xbox 360 and PS3 handle aliasing, effects, textures, load times, and saturation.

You do know that EGM magazine picked the 360 over the PS3 right? They stated that the gfx difference is hardly noticable and would take the DLC.

1.4 - From a general interest point of view...
...I like comparisons as long as they are unbiased and genuinely informative. I mean, how many of us don't want to know the types of visuals a console can push out especially when each works so differently. Its the same with graphics cards for the PC - we are all (albeit maybe in a small way) interested to know what the latest PC graphics card brings to the table.

What I don't like is how people then use this as ammunition to try shoot down those that did not buy the same system or console they have. Fact of the matter is that some games will be better on one console and not the other and which console that is and for which games will depend on many different variables.

As a final note - I for one take my hat off to Take Two and Infinity Ward for releasing sublime versions of their system selling games on both consoles. This is genuinely a great time for gamers around the world!

Were the triggers broke on the 360 controller you used? Mine don't just give right away like you claim. The harder you press the faster you go, just like you claim for the ps3.

does it really matter????

The gameplay is the same on both and neither version features glitches or bugs that make it unplayable.

5 - This guy is clearly biased. It's clear to see he's an Xbox 360 fan by looking at his comments.
If you notice and look carefully, you will that he is desperately trying to discredit the opinions of gaming sites like IGN, who stated that the PS3 version looks slightly better than the 360 version.

I have GTA 4 for my PS3 and I play it on my Sony Bravia HD TV running at 720p - it looks amazing and well-detailed. The graphics and colors look very sharp and clear and from what I can see it has good anti-aliasing. Simply put, the PS3 version looks just how the game was meant to look - it looks very realistic and stunning. It's probably just his preference that he likes the 360 version. I dont need to listen to this guy's comparisons. Rockstar guys said they prefer the PS3 graphics. Most major gaming websites like IGN and Gamesradar have reviewed both versions and have said that the PS3 versions has slightly better graphics, anti-aliasing and realistic colours. It's already been reviwed and judged with both version comaprisons by credible gaming websites and I'll trust their words instead. These people need to to just give this all up damn.

"Simply put, the PS3 version looks just how the game was meant to look"

How do you know that?

If thas how its meant to look then why is it at a lower resolution and no AA compared to the other version?

Poor argument mate

OG!! from what you can see the PS3 has good AA. is that right!! you do know the PS3 version doesnt even have AA. but according to you it has good AA. very good chap!! lets just get over the fact that you can get more for less out of the 360 an its been proven time an time again. an dont forget sony sent their white coat developers to rockstar to help an 640p an no AA was the best they could get out of the PS3.

I need to play my PS3 more considering my 360 took a crap on me Sunday!!

Damn, I got to 50% on the Xbox360 version and I'm damn near 100% on my PS3 the differences are so god damn minimal (next to texture pop-in) that it does not make a difference, so for the love of god, STOP. We already know the PS3 has the best graphics, for this game, and console wise.

10 - @ #5 General...yep, because he didn't say ps3 is superior, right...
ha ha yet another comparison, yeah its getting old but as usual sony loyalists swear anybody who has an opinion not in favor of ps3 must be a 360 fanboy. Did you even read it?, there is a great gametrailers vid that also shows exactly what he's talking about. nah. but you would just rather label the guy an xbox fan and look for excuses to make yourself feel better. I read things before I comment and nothing he said makes him sound like he's pro-360. He actually said this in the last paragraph:

" While I have spent most of my time with the PS3 version, this has been largely do to the fact that I am slightly more fond of the Dual Shock 3 than the 360 controller. As with many of these comparisons, your opinions may be clouded by nostalgia and brand loyalty more than anything else."

hmmm, sounds more like a level headed ps3 fan to me, Yes some of them do still exist outside of this realm known as N4G.

11 - Played both
Been on both versions too, both suffer terrible AA and neither seem to have much aa in the game at all, look at the back of your car when driving, jaggie or what, still a great game, will be even better on pc when i can turn on the aa on my graphics card

12 - "the PS3 version has nice explosions...well"
looks like both versions get to take something home.

it's got a funny and awesome sound track, if you got a 7.1 or 5.1 the game really uses it.

cut scenes look a bit less then most games, but it changes when you start driving, IT IS THE BEST LOOKING GTA GAME OUT THERE, full of laughs and funny classic cut scenes,

my final opinion-

if you have a ps3 or 360 get this game, played the ps3 version bought the 360 version and noticed little differences, so thats a good thing for both console owners.

The person who wrote that article might just want to learn about the subjects that he's trying to speak about.

The picture where he attempts to compare "anti-aliasing" between the two versions of the game, he does so by pointing to the wire mesh on the trash can. If I'm not mistaken, the wire meshes are displayed using a transparency map and anti-aliasing has nothing to do with it.
Antialiasing is only used on the profile edges of polygons on an object. The edge of the rim on the garbage can would be a better place to point the arrow.

The second picture (comparing color) displays a scene in which the 360 version actually has color in it and is well lit, whereas the PS3 side of the picture displays the shaded area behind a building.

The third picture displays two different explosions. The PS3 explosion occurring much closer to the camera than the other. How are you supposed to compare the two when they're not even displayed in the same manner.

This won't cut it. I'm sick of all of these people trying to compare the game. Due to the variable times of day and variable weather, it will be almost impossible to get the exact same conditions for display in order to get a screen shot from both consoles to compare properly.

I've seen people show very drab screenshots from the 360 and say how muted the colors are. I can turn on my Xbox and boot up the game and when it's sunny out, I get just as good color on my system. I'm sure the opposite is true. In the pictures shown in this comparison none of the scenes are the same so it's pretty much a useless article.

18 - the 360 version is clearly better in my eyes
and its a good thing I got the 360 version. I just use my Ps3 as a bluray player and thats about it. Sony fanboys are only gonna stick to what they want to hear and read and there is no way to change tey're mind. But deep inside they're hurting when they see these type of articles.
