Portal Was Offered to XBLA, but Rejected

GamesIndustry.biz has learned that Valve asked Microsoft if it was possible to place its award-winning Orange Box title, Portal, on Xbox Live Arcade for download, but that it was rejected.

"We'd love to do that. Right now it's something we'd love to do. I'd love to sell Portal on Xbox live," said Doug Lombardi, marketing director at Valve. "[But] the platform holders aren't doing that right now. There's a size limit and all kinds of other things.

PSN will probably take it :)

I still don't understand MS standing on this, they allow demos of any size but limit the downloadable games to just 150mb.

1.1 - Its because of the size of the memory modules.
If MS had put a standard HDD in the 360 this console war would have been won 2 years ago.
They got the HDD issue so very wrong.

1.2 - I hope it comes to PSN....
I didn`t care for the Orange Box, but i LOVED Portal..... I`d buy it day one, if it made it to the PSN.

That`s a great idea, to sell Portal as a D/L title.

Thats really good politics for those that say that DLC is here now! Way to go, MS!

Valve doesn't like the PS3 so they probably wont care if portal is on the PSN. It's a really cool game though.

2 - I think
that Microsoft limits the download size of games because some people lack a hard drive. I think that the old download size limit used to be 50mb, but they increased it when Symphony of the Night was released. Also at the same time a larger memory card was released.

It really doesn't make sense bc they could have much bigger games on XBLA. If the Core users wanted to purchase them just buy the hard drive.

Irregardless that's still a huge hurdle to have and is going to end up doing more damage than anything else.

What good is saying you have a huge distribution network when you can't actually distribute items of heft and value.

They really should of stayed with HDD standard. There is afew things MS did wrong this Gen, but not at the size of not haven a HDD standard! They could have gotten away pretty easy with everything else. Yet without a standard HDD its really holding everything else back.

Maybe they were worried about the size of it.

Did you read the article? or even the caption?

"the platform holders aren't doing that right now. There's a size limit and all kinds of other things."

The size is the exact reason it isn't happening.

5 - I think that it is easy to see the obvious here.
The obvious mistake MS made by not having an HDD as standard across all versions of the 360. If they would have done so they would not have had articles like this posted about them and their online DLC option. They did it right last gen, why did they mess it up this gen?

5.1 - They were afraid people wouldn't spend more than $300 on a console.
And unfortunately proved themselves wrong. Sadly, they still think it's a great idea to have systems without Hard Drives, which boggles my mind since my Xbox came standard with one. Core SKU and Arcade SKU were definitely huge mistakes.

This would be a great if they could figure out a way to make it work! It's good to see developers like Valve on board with the 360 and trying to make things happen!

they are increasing the size limit for SF2 HD, so why not this? I already have it but it would make a good addition to the marketplace.

- They made the 360 hard drive optional so they could get the arcade console to a price point. I do think its good that there are option for people who dont want a hard drive or WiFi or wireless pads etc... Some people just get a 360 so their kids can play the Simpsons game.

They shouldnt let this effect future releases though. If an arcade owners wants the larger XBLA titles, buy a hard drive.

Street fighter HD is probably around 300mb's, Portal would be several gig's.

"I think MS did the right thing with not putting a bunch of crap on the 360 that people dont need or want."

Believe it or not, not having a HDD is affecting those that have one and its not fair IMO. Without a set standard across all SKU's, we will bound to come across more caps and limitations on gameplay, performance, and quality. I believe the 360 would have a lot of potential in the marketplace and in its games if every SKU had equipped an HDD as standard.

8 - I hated Orange Box
But Portal was BOMB. Definitely one of the best games I've ever played (except for the lack of a true checkpoint system). Microsoft should just allow them to release this on Xbox Live. I'm sure Sony wouldn't have a problem with it. Then again, the guy in charge of Valve hates Playstation for some odd reason so I doubt we'll ever see it on PSN (unless EA pushes for it).

Dude, TF2, HL2:EP2 and Portal were fantastic, such great games espically if you get them on the PC.

Do they hate the PS3 that much? Sony would have Portal up in one week! Valve.... you disappoint me! Portal is a great game though.

I mean if Live and marketplace are so great how can they turn down such a great offer. Sony would have that up instantly if given the opportunity and would be front page on the PSN.

But Valve HATES the Playstation 3. Gabe Newell has always worked very closely with Microsoft. It's like a son turning against his evil dad...

Not gonna happen.
