Epic Steals a User-Created Map for their next release?

"I'm sure many of you already seen the new UT3 360 trailer, but what most of you don't know is that one of the maps shown there ( DM-ArcticShipment ) is actually a user created map done by a member that goes by EpicJon on the Epic Forums.

The map, while not being exactly the same, is a blatant rip off, it's a cargo boat, in the middle of the Artic ocean, with snow falling and with icebergs on the background. When EpicJon posted about his discontent in the Epic Forums he got banned and his thread deleted..."

This is a tough call lawsuit wise.

Epic did provide the tools for him to make the mod...

I am wondering if in the small print it is stated that they can collect mods....

On the other hand, if they aren't allowed to use it with out permission.
Can he still sue? I also wonder if that comes up, will Epic just use a loophole and distribute the map via a "FREE" DLC on Xbox Live?

Really interesting. I know that one guy didn't get in trouble for the master chief mod....

EDIT: Epic never gave a damn about the PS3 user community. Sure we have mods, but it took over 5 months for a "litte" patch and EPIC shipped the game without all the promised features on the back of package. The mods are nice, but having to install them 1 by 1 having to use a outside storage device is ridiculous. Its a shame Cliffy B was working on Gears of War 2, because I am sure he wouldn't let Mark Rein ship a 90% complete product even though that is his boss.

And when is the last time they changed the in game community page?
O it never got updated, and the common person still does not know how to get mods.

Hey guys these maps take a while to create and test out.

I know I would be pist off if someone took my 2-3 weeks worth of work and packed in a game and sold it without giving me a dime.

Basically if the story is true...EPIC not only committed an act of thievery but of communism as well.

If Epic committed such an act, of just taking this guys work, it is a really sad thing for us up and coming creators. Hopefully this isn't case but nothing has come out on Epic's side about this yet...if it ever will.

The maps are NOTHING alike except the setting, the layout is completely different the only thing remotely similar is that they're both set in the arctic by an iceberg on a ship.... by that meaning I guess Infinity Ward stole his map as well for Shipment.

I think it is worse that Epic banned the user and deleted his thread. He created the map and he should get credit for it. The recognition is important. Compensation...he should get something. I'm angry that a developer, big in the mod community would stoop to such lows.

10 - If the pack is free, its alright.

If they sell it and he doesnt get a small cut, then its time for a big lawsuit that any lawyer would jump on. When he bought the game he bought the tools to build custom maps. Epic cant just steal what he built with it and sell it without compensation.

Epic didn't steal this guys mod. The concept behind them both are the same. (a Ship in the artic)
Line 242 show both the creator's map first and then Epic's map.

They would have been very aware of ArticShipment, it's been page 1 of the release forums for a long time. They may not have stolen the map but they certainly were heavily influenced by it.

Epic are dirty with the UT3 era, they've been so with this, their moderation of the forums (which is the worst I've ever encountered), Mark rein and his endless spin of pre release fantasy features, failure to adequetly finish a released game, slow and pathetic after release support.

Epic used to rock, but since all the licensing they've gained from the UT2/2.5 engine they seem to have totally forgotten why they are where they are.

As for the poster spamming, I doubt it. He would have been banned because he brought up a touchy subject. They wouldn't want the bad press, simple as that. Bring back Cliffy B to UT and throw the politician Mark Rein out to go work on web based games or something.

They are just angry because ut3 hasn't sold sh^t.

Fancy Graphics for a sh^t game. Reminds me of GOW. Great graphics, poor gameplay, boring. nothing to see, please move along.

But tbh, i wouldn't miss epic and would not miss the unreal engine either. I'd much prefer devs to make their own engines. I like a diff look to things.

This is not lame, everything you make/mod/create with Unreal Tournament 3 or pretty much any company that allows you to create stuff with their engines belongs to THEM. Read the End User License Agreement. This is not news, just some retard who doesn't know jack shi* about jack shi* and wants to make a post about it.

Edit: And also, his thread on the site was probably deleted because of flaming or breaking forum guidelines, they are extremely strict on their site. (I was banned after a day for whining about some crap on GoW last year).
