Mark Rein confirms mods will be coming to Unreal Tournament 3 on 360

Talking to OXM at the Midway Gamers Day in Las Vegas, Epic president Mark Rein confirmed that the best mods will be available to players of the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3, although details are still being worked out. "We know some of these great mods are going to play a role on Xbox 360, even if we have to get some people and bring them over ourselves," he said. "We'll figure it out."

1.1 - err firstly i got vf5 brilliant game. Playing online is immense .
so smooth just like doa4 only a few occasions have i experience lag when playing people in japan. I hope tekken 6 will be as good exp online.

Secondly this is great news i was so hoping that mods would be announced. Well done epic for coming up with a solution and not forsaking your fans that own 360's.

Split screen and mods who would have thought it? sweet.

1.2 - Probably not full-blown open mod support like PS3...
I kinda wonder what will be the extent of the selection mods that will be distributed through XBL. Could just be a couple of the major mods that don't violate any copyright regulations. I guess it would be a no-go and a big no-no to Microsoft/Epic to being able to play as Solid Snake or MC or any other unnofficial game character in the 360 version, or whatever mods that contain copyrighted stuff.

Not probably statix. No mod support period. Their plan is to track down the best mods and make it available thru xbox live. I wonder if they will charge for them i truly hope not. Anyways the mods won't be as much as ps3 since it is not real mod support but it is better than nothing.

Sorry to sound so negative guys but this still isn't mod support but great job on epics part though for making those mods available. Already have it on ps3 so this news doesn't really affect me. Great job on epics part though. Lets just wait and see how much mod support 360 version will get

Anyone that has ever played UT knows that this series has always been about user mods, maps, and mutators and now the major feature of UT history will not be freely moving onto the 360 and that called getting shafted.

Mark is using the 360 fanboys to help sell his game.

Pulling their little strings with comments like....it's gonna look a little better, we promise. Now it's, ummm...yeah, were going to try to put mods up...somehow. Even though it impossible to keep up with the scene considering all the red tape (ie certification and such) they have to go through for any type of addon pack.

He'll saying anything to get them worked up and its sad that allot of them will fall for it.

Just look at morons like Jason360...eating it up! hahahaha.

People just do not get it. The 360 won't get most of the mods at all. Mark says they are coming but they are still trying to work the issue with MS. They haven't had a lot of luck there.

Remember when CliffyB said he wanted the Gears map pack to be free. Was it? Yes...after what, 6 months or so. You paid to get it when it mattered. If I were people I would save this page so you can remember some of the comments certain people here were stupid enough to make. It is going to come back and bite them in their dumb ass.

I read a comment by theMart, er, I mean Jason360 that said he could make mods and upload them to his 360. NO YOU CAN'T.

We read the article. You just do not know how mod support works. You can't upload mods to your 360 from your PC. You are going to have to get them over Live. MS isn't going to allow you to do what PS3 and PC owners can do. What part of that simple equation can you not grasp? Mod support isn't truly in the 360 version. What you are getting is no different than anything else you download as an add on for a 360 title...like Horse Armor.

Mod support is about free architecture and the 360 isn't getting that.

Well, these mods won't come with the game. Becuase then you'd be paying for it. And that would be illegal.

It sounds like they are actually goign to hire soem of the mod creators to help them, becuase then he says "even if we have to get some people and bring them over ourselves".

I wonder which ones they'll be getting. There are tons of great mods and maps.

Snarf pack? Tiberium? Odysseus? Sharlow Street? Tokay Towers? Campgrounds 2k8? Siege Reactor? ...I could go on all day.

the fact that Epic are using this as a solution is commendable. I am cynical as well as to how they will manage to update this regularly as the mod scene progresses. I suppose we will see how it goes

Only problem is with ninja gaiden 2,Mgs4 and gta4 round the corner i wonder if gamers will pick this up?

I can make a mod and distribute on Live, no matter how the process is done, I can still get my mod on Live. That would be called "mod support" no matter how you try and spin, if I can get my mod on Live then thats what it is.

No one knows the extent of the "mod support" in the 360 version, but I highly doubt it will be the same as the open architecture and system as the PS3 version, where anyone can download and install any mod they want. The mods have to be officially approved, sanctioned, and processed/reprogrammed by both Epic AND Microsoft's certification process before they can be distributed through XBL, which means you can say goodbye to playing with copyrighted assets/alternate game characters, or goodbye to some of the smaller, more obscure mods.

This is definitely not full-blown mod support like the PS3, for sure. This is more like Epic doing a favor to the disadvantaged 360 fans by porting a couple of the more major, popular mods that exist out there.

EDIT: And don't phantom-disagree with me just because I actually read the article, put up an informed, corroborated argument, and proved you wrong. You know who you are.

Seriously, the inconsistency is ridiculous. I could quote that UTIII "sucks" or "we'll be playing gears 2 instead" back when it first came out on the PS3. But now it comes out on the 360 all I see is "Yay, we have mods, splitscreen, and better graphics!"

I thought no one cared about UT III? I thought mods didn't matter? I thought all that was wanted was "5 official epic made" maps?"

So it took them 8 months to get the feature...and whats your point again? Mark Rein is just trying give 360 owners a reason to buy a game PS3 owners have enjoyed months ago.

5 - On the Mod issue, I wrote earlier
Now I understand Unreal with Mod support has been sweet because
of the "open" architecture of the PC and now the PS3, but sheesh, when you look at it, every "shooter" could implement Mod support if they wanted to, but we still buy other shooters, that have "limited Maps", as well as "DLC maps" so "not worth buying" is ludicrous. You can still enjoy the game, just as any other shooter.

Does that mean if it had Mod support, PS3 fans would be praising it? Knowing it will look more polished + Mods? I doubt it, there would be some other sh^t to whine about or downplay.

So why does it matter, really, PS3 fans already have and played this game. Well I heard, hardly anyone playing it much online though.

I hear it all the time, if this game was to debut on the 360 first and the PC, we would of heard the "I'm getting it for PC, as it will be the best version". I rarely see 360 fans that said, "I'm getting it on the PC instead", when it came out for the PS3 and PC platform. There is always a reason why one would pick the PS3 version of a multi-plat game, even if the 360 version was superior in any way.

Perfect Example: Vip3r 2.3 - But no keyboard and mouse support. :)

Personally, I've taken a break from shooters. Been playing XBL + PSN games and RPG's. Waiting for fighters and probably NG2.

Thing is, at is core UT is really a pretty shallow game experience. It's the mods that give it longevity and life. I'm not sure what you guys think are capable with mods, its not just maps or new cheats. It really is limitless, in theory, if you were good enough (say as good as Epic o_O), you could create Gears of War from the SDK.

main fault with your argument is: hardly any "exclusive" games for the PS3 release on PC, ever.

Compared to most of the Xbox360 "exclusives" like Gears of war and Halo or Bioshock which released on PC shortly after their console debut or at the same time so far... That reduces the incentive to buy the system cause you can get the games on the PC you already have anyways.

Compared to the way exclusives are KEPT exclusive to the Playstation you will just have to buy the PS3 to play these games. You won't get FinalFantasy 13 on PC, you won't get MetalGearSolid4 on PC, you did not get Singstar on the PC, neither Resistance or Ratchet and Clank or Uncharted.

PS3 exclusives are real exclusive, you have to buy the system to get them, not only 'first' but at all.

And the typical fanboy point following that would be: but but but they are "timed exclusive" or "console exclusive" while both are laughable at best. Something is either EXCLUSIVE, or it is not. And if its on PC and xbox or PC and PS3 its not exclusive, its multiplatform :p There is no "little bit exclusive" like there is no "a little bit pregnant"

PS: that does not say that multiplatform games can't be good, quite contrary Gears of War was pretty good as was prolly Halo2 and Mass Effect (have not played either so i won't make any judgments here but people say they are good and reviews do, too). Its just that these fail as "system sellers" cause you don't need the system to play them ;)

And i wouldn't say people would buy the PC version over the console version if they own the console, but if they don't they neither need to buy the system to play, thats the point ...

GTA is probably trying to be as realistic as possible. So stuff like low gravity or space weapons shouldn't exist... not even in mods.

GTA already has.. what was it? 16? different multiplayer modes. I don't think it's fair to ask more from R*.

I'm not gonna analyze every situation and every game. The PS3 doe snot share the same Architecture as the PC and Sony is not pushing Games for Windows Live initiative. We know this.

I guess this is one of the Exceptions, where it hits the PC and PS3, so thats that.

That's probably a difficult answer. Common sense says yes, from past experience with Gears maps Epic wanted to make free. They started at a Fee, but went free later. If MS could force the hand and make us pay for a map pack that Epic made, would Sony follow suit? Or would Epic say "Well, they have to pay for it, so you do too PSN"? Then the PC would be the only choice for free mods from Epic.

6.2 - I see what you're saying but...
At the moment, the PSN offers an open network where user created mods are free just as they are on the PC and due to MS's closed network, they have the power to force developers to charge for DLC. It seems to be a way for MS to make the buck even if the developer keeps the price low and refuses a profit at the expense of their fan base. I do wonder if it is the closed network that forces this and that we see how the open network of the PSN allows for more generous devs to keep the extra content free. In reality, the PSN doesn't have much to do with the mods for the PS3 version as they are all able to be downloaded on your PC then uploaded to your PS3 circumventing the network all together. No need to download them through the Sony PSN so no work on Sony's part thus they are free.

I guess what I was referring to was the downloaded pack released 3 weeks ago (or so). Epic remade some of their old maps and released them free on PSN. If they do this on Live, would it be free there too? If not, would Epic start to charge for their own content, not the user generated content.
