Soul Calibur XBLA Based on Dreamcast Version

When the original Soul Calibur was announced as an upcoming Xbox Live Arcade title yesterday, it was not immediately clear whether the project would be ported from the excellent Dreamcast edition or the less-than-perfect arcade rendition.

Shacknews checked with Namco on the matter, and can now happily confirm that it is the former case.

hardly anything to do with what Fishy Fingers posted, unless Fishy Fingers in confusing Version (Arcade/Console) with Sequel (1,2,3)

didn't that game get 9's?

Somebody stole that game, when I had it.

The difference is I still liked the Dreamcast's D-Pad than the Xbox 360's. It's a fn shame they cannot make a regular fn D-PAD. that's the only thing that holds me back from purchasing "fighters" on the 360.

The one thing I can think of to improve the D-Pad on the 360 controller is to license some other company's design. It's not that Microsoft couldn't implement a better design themselves, it's that all the other companies own the patents and licenses to the better designs (case in point, Sony and Nintendo). The only real way that, in my honest opinion, that Microsoft could improve on their design is to license one of Sega's designs from them, or just plain go out and buy it from them. They are pretty much the only company out there that had decent and comfortable D-pads on their controllers. Only way to go, IMHO.

Cool game. You know though, since this is coming out on XBLA it might be fun to include a Microsoft character into the roster, just for sh(ts and giggles. Maybe not Master Chief (too obvious), but someone like the Arbiter with his energy sword could be cool. Again, just for fun, no real impact (or any impact, this is a fighting game after all) on the story.

Soul Calibur was one of my favourite Dreamcast games. 360 is the perfect place for a remake, the controller layout of should translate perfectly.
I dug out my DC and played this not so long ago. The graphics have help up suprisingly well for a game which was released in 1999. Should look awesome in HD.

This is certainly good news to see the preservation of an excellent Dreamcast game. However, Dark Sniper will not be satisfied until Shenmue is brought to XBLA and Shenmue II being brought to Xbox originals.

Buying an Xbox 360 was one of Dark Sniper's lifelong mistakes. If you look at his avatar, you can draw to an easy and accurate conclusion that he is an avid fan of the Shenmue series. On the Sega Dreamcast, gamers had the blessing to play the greatest game of all time which is the original Shenmue.

Due to the unfortunate demise of Dreamcast, Shenmue II did not see release of the sequel in Dark Sniper's current continent of North America. If any North American Shenmue fan wanted to continue the Shenmue storyline, it could only be done on Xbox. So Dark Sniper purchased an original Xbox to experience once again, the greatest sequel of all time.

For those who have played Shenmue II, you know that it ended on a very strong cliffhanger ending that has left millions of fans wondering what happened to Ryo to this day. Dark Sniper was aware of Microsoft acquiring exclusive rights to Shenmue so he automatically assumed that Shenmue III would see release on Xbox 360, so in 2005 he purchased one. But he was wrong.

Microsoft and Sega could easily have a guranteed million seller and improve the declining reputation of Xbox 360 easily by announcing Shenmue III. But Microsoft would rather use 50 million (which is more than enough to fund Shenmue III) to purchase downloadable content for a game that will inevitably sell more on PLAYSTATION® 3.
