Why the Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 Map Pack Pricing Makes no Sense

"Both Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 are offering new maps to players, but are the convoluted pricing strategies in the best interests of the consumer?"

I prefer the halo 3 model. If they come out free, thats great for me, as I will get to play them. Those who want to play them early can pay...

yeah i've always held off on halo 3 maps. But i might buckle eventually on the cod4 ones, if they are never to go free.

3 - Free Maps
I have no interest in buying the Halo 3 maps since Circuit City is giving them away with a Ninja Gaiden II pre-order. Yay for being cheap!

... I pay for maps is if they offer more to me as a player. I like how Warhawk includes new vehicles for the new maps, as well as options to use the new vehicles in the old maps.

5 - demand
One thing I have learned is that digital distribution is still being figured out. (more like groping in the dark actually) As the consumers in this new game, we have the power to shape the future of DLC. Companies like Bungie, MS and Activision are all watching what we do with DLC. If a majority are happy to buy it as soon as it comes out, then they will continue with that model.

I personally waited for the Halo 3 map pack to come out for free, no need to rush.

yeah i can see people wanting additional functionality. i guess the question is how long can a map give you enjoyment for, and is that time worth 10 bucks?

console dev are being greedy about this, we pay more than pc player and have to pay to enjoy new content (free on pc) fuc* that!
meh i'll stick with the old ones until gta hits...
and i have like 20 ps2 games to finish...

The devs don't set the price. Bungie has said many times that MS set the price.

Look at Unreal Tourney III. Not only did they make new map packs for free on the PS3, but they also gave users an open interface to design their own maps, items and characters. If only more developers would take this stance, we might see some competition in the online market. There is nothing worse than paying for content, just to find out that few others did the same. Like Guitar Hero III. I have almost all the downloadables, and the majority of people I play don't. Not even the free ones.

I dunno. I am torn. I mean Epic has given away free UT3 maps and made it so players can mod their own... I guess it all depends though for me. If buying COD4 maps has interest in making the next game even better and gets invested in that then sounds good. Also the cut that Sony and MS get I hope goes towards better customer service and other stuff too. As long as it doesn't go to the uncle scrooge swimming pool I'm all about it and I feel that this is the main goal for where it all goes.

...you dont believe the money is going to better customer service, do you?

Uncle Scrooge is buying a house and some call girls with that money.

I'm not paying 10 dollars for 4 maps, 2 of which are already on the disc (Killhouse and Broadcast), and one of which is a remake of an old map. Especially since GTAIV will be coming out before the COD4 map pack for PS3.

No way I'm paying $10 for two remakes and a new map, I'll stick it out and wait till they're free.

I'm not all that keen on remakes of maps either, is making new stuff that hard? maybe its just thought to excusable for extra content rather than part of the retail game.

12.1 - I'd rather have remakes
then maps based on the campaign.

13 - FYI (for halo player)
for those of you h3 player that are waiting for the legendary maps to become free, they arent exactly planning on making them free.

you can see this on bungie.net on the weekly update

Bungie Weekly Update: 4/11/08
Legendary Map Pack Promotion
"Obviously this may not appeal to everyone out there but we’re happy to at least be able to offer this little bonus to those of you who choose to purchase the maps. For those of you who are still on the fence… please be aware that as we've previously stated, we are not currently aware of any plans to make these maps available for free."

They will become free... they just dont know about it yet. Around the time the next DLC gets released.

If not then...i live a drive away from Bungie studios...you might see me in the news one day (only if they dont become free)

Besides, that is probably to make people buy it on impulse after reading that. You don't want to shoot yourself in the foot by saying it will eventually become free right away.

15 - I can't imagine that at some point the Halo ledgendary maps won't be free,
and I won't be downloading them until they are. If the maps are original, not remakes of old maps or re-hashes of single player levels, and reasonably priced then maybe. There are too many games coming out these days for an older game to maintain it's staying power and making new maps meaningful.

If developers really need to make more money and think using DLC is they way, then how about charging more for your product and have all the maps available from the get go. I'd rather pay ten dollars more up front soo everyone has the same more extensive map packs, than have to deal with wating a few months only to find just a handful of people have downloaded the maps and then 4-6 months later they are free because the next map pack is out and then once again some people have your packs and other don't, screwing the MP rotation for ever.

So make the game complete, charge what you must and let the customer decide with his wallet.

I would be suprised if Bungie refused to make the map packs free, its usually their policy to make them free eventually.

the fact that they cost money wasn't really the point, just the methods in which they are sold.
