Pachter: PS3 Outsold 360 in March

PlayStation 3 outsold Xbox 360 for the third month in a row, but the Nintendo Wii overshot the combined sales of its rivals, according to Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter.

Ahead of March's NPD Group sales data, due to release this Thursday, Pachter forecast PS3 sales of 365,000 units, edging out sales of 310,000 for Xbox 360.

In a Monday investor note, Pachter predicted that Nintendo will come out on top for yet another month, with Wii sales of 700,000 during March's five-week retail period.

Well i didn't have as much faith in my PS3. I was planning to sell it immediately after MGS4 which offcourse got delayed and now ps3 seems to be back untop. Anyway is anyone really surprised? PS3 blu ray continues to give it the edge over the 360 in the eyes of the avg consumer

Price cut. Nothing short of a price cut can turn the tide in their favor. Maybe now they will stop talking this and that about how all the best games are on 360 and bla bla. Maybe they will actually focus all their attention on getting exclusive games. PS3 already stung them with GT5 in EU, GT5 won't have as big an effect in NA but MGS4 will sting them a lot. One of the biggest games of the yr and they don't have it on their platform tisk tisk.

@brothernick. Pretty much everyone was underestimating the importance of that built in blu ray drive in the ps3. If ps3 drops to 300 this yr with the rest of the stand alones that are expected to drop, it could start selling like the wii

Software sales are estimated to be on the rise again this year which equals more software selections for all 3 =) It also shows that more people are buying games...my plan to turn every human soul on the planet into a gamer is finally coming together....muahahahahha!! so when do you think that sony will release another console? coz when you look at things, if microsoft release a new console in 2010, sony are gonna have to follow suit pretty soon!

imagine they gave microsoft a two year head start next-time, and it sold in exactly the same way the 360 did, and sony then started with an 18mil defecit? not only that, pretty much all the developers would then be geared to work solely on microsofts console. meaning that the undoutable suprerior hardware would just get even more ports than the ps3 gets now! sony will have no choice but to release a new machine soon after microsoft releases a new console.

anyway, back to the figures! thursdays not here yet. and although sony have started to outsell microsoft, it's still nowhere enough of a margin to begin to make up the numbers! microsoft still have a considerable lead over sony in NA, and 50 thousand more a month means microsoft will continue to keep that lead for quite awhile! sony need to satrt emulating the wii's monthly figures if they want to catch microsoft in NA within the next 18 months!!

If sony doesn't release a new console until 2014 or later and microsoft releases a new one in 2010. Then sony will be forcing microsoft to compete with the ps3 which will have a huge install base compared to the 720 and will be considerably cheaper. Then by the time They release the PS4 they will be competing with the Xbox after the 720, if microsoft is even in the console business by then.

If microsoft releases another console later than 2010, lets say they try to hold out closer to the release of the PS4, then they will be pushing hardware that's pretty much already topped out against the PS3 which is (according to many developers) just beginning to see a fraction of it's potential.

Either way, they lose. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the last xbox, if not, the next one certainly will be.

was 399.99 really the magic price point? You look at the 360 library and all the "AAA" games it has, the much heralded XBL, and yet here's PS3-a more expensive system that has yet to release its best games-is outselling it. MS must be pulling their hair out.

This coming Holiday season PS3 will have its bigs out, God of War III will be on the horizon, and I predict the 399 sku goes down to 349.

I still know a few casual gamers who purchased the 360 due to it being very cheap, on the other hand i know many more who have brought PS3's due to owning PS2s and knowing about their ps2 sequels coming out this year and next i guess this is teh case around the world. Of course the PS3 would outsell 360 its march the month where Gran Turismo 5:Prolouge came out and shipped many copies in Europe alone..

Well Pacther has always been pretty close when it comes to forcasts... b/c it is what he is paid to do for his investors.

He often shares his opinions on other game related issues which sometimes come true, and other times he flops. As an analyst, he just makes educated guesses... but when it comes to sales trends & forecasts, he has usually been right so far this gen.

The analysis gap keeps going up and down with Pachter and VG Chartz lol...it was the 360 edging out the PS3 by 1,000 the other day for VG Charts. 3 more days until the NPD, and the PS3 outselling by 50,000 in the US is quite a prediction, but we'll see.

Sorry Bladestar, but I have to disagree with you. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't February a 4-week period? And the March numbers are for a 5-week period?

February: 254.6K / 4 = 63,650 per week
March: 310K / 5 = 62,000 per week

So, if you look at it on a weekly basis, and not just total sales for the period, sales actually DROPPED 2.59% for the period.

If I'm wrong about the 4 week vs 5 week thing, then I apologize.

Edit: Using this same method, the PS3 went from 70.2K per week to 73K per week, an increase of 3.8%.

According to this prediction, the PS3 outsold the 360 by 55,000 units, and that's just in North America. At that rate, it's 660,000 a year. At which rate, it would catch up to the 360 in 10 years. However, that's just North America. The PS3 is outselling the 360 in Europe and Japan as well, so that gap is being closed faster than you think. So, all in all, +55,000 over the competition in just one region (by the way, the competitions' most successful region), is pretty good and deserves credit.

If you check out the VGChartz numbers, the PS3 is selling between 85 and 90% as much software as the 360 each week and has been for the last month (maybe longer, I only looked up the numbers for the past month). Since the PS3 only has about 65% as many consoles out there, that means that a greater percentage of PS3 owners are buying games compared to 360 owners. In other words, the PS3 attachment rate is growing faster than the 360's.

are getting a bit excited over nothing, yes it is true that the ps3 has sold more units than the xbox 360 for the third month in a row, but what about the previous 12-18 months prior? It works like this, the ps3 is newer than the xbox 360, therefore it is rational to think that alot of people have played and/or owned an xbox 360 and want to try something new, its a bit like a cell phone, you buy one, get to know it inside out, see what features you get then you get another for the "something new factor", if the ps3 had sold something like 100,000 more units then that is an achievement but 55,000, in the grand scheme of things its not realy that much, considering its still about 7 million units behind, this is my opinion, you can disagree im not expecting anything less but please no silly or childish replies, this is not a fan boy post

First of all, the worldwide gap is 6.5 million, not 7 million (half a million is 8% of 6.5 million, so to round that up to 7 is pretty significant and falsifies the numbers). Second of all, if you're going to use the worldwide lead that 360 has, then you need to use the worldwide difference for March sales, not the US difference.

The worldwide difference was 274,664 more PS3's than 360's, according to VGChartz (That's for the week beginning March 1 to the week ending April 5, which is 5 weeks, and the only way to get all of the data for March... note: The data for this Pachter prediction in the US is for the exact same period) At that rate, 5 weeks out of 52 weeks, you'd multiply that difference by 10.4 to see how many more PS3's would be sold MORE than 360's in a full year, at the exact same rate: that number is 2,856,505. At that rate, it would take the PS3 approximately 2 years and 3 months to equal the 360 in sales, worldwide. Slow and steady wins the race, eh?

EDIT: Funnily enough, I decided to see what the difference was between the two systems in America only, and the difference is 6.8 million. So almost the entirety of the 360's lead over PS3 is in North America. So even though it'll only take about 2 years for the PS3 to overtake the 360 worldwide, it would take nearly 10 years to overtake it in America, at this exact rate. But America is only a fraction of the industry. By 10 years, the PS3 will have such a huge worldwide lead over the 360 that it won't even matter if it's caught up to it in America.

LOL, thats some pretty fancy math you did there....except that you may have used a flawed formula.

Your thoery makes 2 key errors:
1) it assumes the 360 will keep selling at its current pace.
2) it assumes the PS3 won't continue to increase the margin.

Your theory should include:
1) the 360 sold less units in 2007 than it did in 2006
2) the PS3 sales are increasing & the big titles are yet to come

Simply put, you can't just assume that the margins you gave will stay the same, and multiply them to get your projections (because those margins won't remain the same)

Well, I see what you're saying. I never said that the 360 would continue to do exactly as it's doing likewise the PS3. I merely said "At that rate..." (a couple of times), so I was just doing the math for the current rate. That's all, and it's not what I actually believe will happen. I see the PS3 closing the gap even faster as time goes on (selling better while 360 sells either the same or not as well).

its in its 3rd year and yet being beaten, this should be its time to break records..remember waht ps2 did in its 3rd year it broke records sales..with 360 one year prior launch its just poor to c its progress....and the same pachter said tht GTA4 is definatly going to be shorter thn the other 3 just becouse of 360 9gb space....im very much sad to hear tht just because of this sick machine around we are yet to go next gen....and im very much sure either gears gonna be on 2 dvds and if one thn its gonna be shameless short like the first one......

point taken, but my post was referring to npd numbers not global, i think that microsoft would be more than happy to dominate the american market first and foremost, a massive factor why the european sales are not as good as they should be is the rrod syndrome, plus the fact that the 360 is an american product doesnt help too much, in europe american products dont have a reputation of been good quality like japanese products

Thanks for the clarification on NPD versus Global.
The reputation for quality of build will not get better any time soon considering the magnitude of the RROD and other issues the 360 has. I am Canadian and it has kept me from purchasing a 360.

I know that I miss out on quality games like Bioshock, Gears and Mass but I get to keep a little bit of my sanity by not mailing in a system repeatedly. I know I do not have the patience for a product built like that.

I get where you're going with the "look after the American market" thing, but I don't think thats what they've been doing. They've certainly TRIED to get the other markets ($50 for GTA4 DLC, marketing JRPGS like Eternal Sonata & Lost Odyssey).....its just not working.

Fact is, 7.5 million units of the 360's current total were sold in 2006 when it was competing against the PS2 and NGC. But since the Wii and PS3 arrived on the scene, the 360 has been the 3rd place unit.

The 360 blew its load in 2007 with Halo3, Bioshock, Mass Effect etc and was still outsold worldwide by the PS3....and that trend is only going to continue with "GT5", "FF13", "MGS4".......

It's surprising that Sony is outselling during these 3 short months especially when they literally have NO MUST HAVE GAMES yet. At this rate.. I don't see the 360 outselling the ps3 anytime soon again. Is GTA going to make people pick Microsoft over Sony? I don't think so.. At best things will stay the same. Now with other heavy hitters like MGS4 coming out a month or so after GTA4 i only see Sony narrowing the gap within the install base.

Microsoft seems to be losing with thier "must have games" right? Trust me, Call of Duty 4 is selling these systems right now. And PS3 has a better first party library (07' and 08') now with quality games releases like MLB 08': The Show, Hot Shots Golf, etc in March alone.... I never use the term "must have games" because everyone's taste is different. "Must have console" on the other hand is more relevant.

I know you mean well bro, I am just pointing out the fact that 360's library means NOTHING at the moment for many consumers. PS3, Wii, and 360 have their little niches, but consumers are not blind at these price points. They know what they want. And PS3 still costs the MOST. :)

I get what you're saying (that the PS3 has held its own despite not having its most highly coveted releases out yet) but I'm weary to say that it doesn't have any "must have games".
What is considered a "must have" game is subjective.

Oblivion, Uncharted, HL2:OrangeBox, Resistance FoM, Call of Duty 4, Ratchet & Clank FToD.....those are all "must haves" to me, and someone else might have a different list, like maybe "RockBand", "Assassins Creed", "Guitar Hero III" etc.

PS3 is the best console no doubt about it.
I love Sony to death.

I can go on people just want an all around multi-media machine and the PS3 is the best choice for the consumer.
