N'Gai Croal comments on RE5 trailer, but all we see is another Capcom hit

During a recent interview with MTV Multiplayer (concerning the depiction of blacks in games), N'Gai Croal of Newsweek gave an enlightening talk about the controversy behind the Resident Evil 5 trailer, and how Capcom could have done things to avoid the unnecessary fuss.

According to Croal, it was just a few moments in, when he realized that there were some things about the trailer that had the potential to inflame members of the black community, however unintentional it might have been. While the majority of us were fawning over the detailed images and dynamic lighting -- not to mention getting all antsy about the debut of a new Resident Evil game on next-generation hardware since RE4 righted the series again -- others were seeing something starkly different. To them the trailer contained just over three minutes of classic racist imagery that many Caucasians (including myself) never even noticed:

More on this, after the jump:

"There was stuff like even before the point in the trailer where the crowd turned into zombies. There sort of being, in sort of post-modern parlance, they're sort of "othered." They're hidden in shadows, you can barely see their eyes, and the perspective of the trailer is not even someone who's coming to help the people. It's like they're all dangerous; they all need to be killed. It's not even like one cute African - or Haitian or Caribbean - child could be saved. They're all dangerous men, women and children. They all have to be killed."

Croal then goes on to touch upon Resident Evil 4, and that even though the zombies (yes, I know they were supposedly not zombies in that game) were obviously non-white, a fair comparison cannot be made, considering the historical American race relations of the past...

What does a game about killing zombies have anything to do with race?

Its seems if you're an angry, oversensitive black person, with a chip on his/her shoulder, then everything is about race.

Thankfully thats just a minority group with in a minority group. Most black gamers wouldn't have a problem with this I would think.

3.1 - Agreed.
I'm black too, and I feel that if you look hard enough, you can find racism anywhere if it meets your private agenda.

People seriously need to let things like this go. Hell, if there were no black people in the game at all, someone could call racism. You just can't win . . . there's just no pleasing some people.

F the race card

I like how it's usually those who're pointing fingers and calling something racist are actually the one's who are being racist and closed minded

I love how discriminate and segregated this world still is

6.1 - Was just about to say the same thing. This is a Japanese developed game.
Anyway, one has to wonder how many white people this fool has shot in video games without a second thought. I hope Capcom makes a zombie model look just like N'Gai Croal. hahaha

so, if a white person is shown as dangerous(zombies RE1,2,3, code veronica....) this is ok, but if blacks are shown in the same way- it's a crime? hogwash.

and on the slavery issue and not understanding if we aren't that color. i guess you forgot all of the millions of whites who were slaves at diff. points in history. newsflash, slavery didn't start with black people. and also, many countries with a "black only" population continue to enslave, mutilate, and torture each other. where is the outrage to this stuff that ACTUALLY HAPPENS FOR REAL!!!!!

so is croal saying it's ok to kill white zombies?. please,.......... the RE history has had white zombies. there might be a point to his views if EVERY resident evil has had the zombies being black people, but this isn't the case. N'Gai needs to quit looking for problems where no problem exists. it's a game and nothing more. the only thing i was wondering(while watching the trailer) was where is the location and is this game going to continue where the great RE4 ending left off.

You don't understand, and obviously didn't read what N'gai was sayin
but sorry roman times(ex) don't count. Are you living in rome? As well as was a televison program made about you sayin you were a monster
and came to still cats wives? Or been told not to be taught native tongue. No....hmmmm. I'm not sure if your feelings were hurt somwhere but in regards to in the native land I know a country that steal people
stuff, lies, and conspire to get what they want. And still as a colored person shot for being jus that. Whites(as you put)are also suppose to be god, jesus, a saint and so forth. This was not to be offensive, jus more of (and you proved) some won't and never will understand, ever. To those who do thank you for taking the time to read what he said and the courage to help get those who don't to somehow understand.

A white dude killing white people in prior resi's ISN'T THE DAMN SAME!!! its not in the same ball park. The devs behind the game have said they've got inspiration from black hawk down.
Look Croal himself isn't saying this is KKK training material. However he does make a great point. When people like him bring up this issue ignorant fools say "oh it's just a game." wait so we were all defending Bioshock and saying it was art for purpose. Maybe because we thought that games are saying things. Lets not play dumb.

seriously if one more person says "wellzz in da priorzz resi' so dat was racist" i think i might explode. I think the only thing worse than that is these stupid asshats saying "Omg so dat means GTA san andreas is Raysist"
Yeah gta the game where you kill people of all complexions and backgrounds. Gta A game where the protagonists have been black, white, italian, now eastern european.

think about it. Croal is probably one of the most intelligent and well respected gaming journalists.

I think resi 4 felt just as ugly as this game, but no one really spoke about it. It was ugly in the same way Hollywood is ugly. "oh look the president's aryan blonde daughter needs to be saved from these non zombies medditeraneans" who will save the day? some 90's looking blonde with baywatch hair.
In addition what makes these games even more f'd up than prior resi's is the fact that they're making the "zombies" less stupid. by giving them more "intelligence" you make them more human, by doing that it kinda feels like you're killing civilians. Thats what resi 4 felt like, and of what i've seen of this game it's what it looks like too. I dont think we've even seen an inch of how much commotion this game is gonna cause.

reason why the protagonists in all the main series resi are white is because they believe white's will be put off from buying the game. Appealing to demographics. but then we kinda gotta realize something about the demographic. in the resi 5 gs forum all i saw for weeks was "cant wait for me to kill sum n*****s" "'cause its africa u know they''re gonna run fast"

lastly ppl saying "they're japaneez they' cant be raysist". This game and the japanese like everywhere and everything else has been inspired by hollywood and america.

9 - I'm not touching that game at all
People aren't stupid, they know exactly what kinda of imagery that trailer portrayed but they jsut dont' give a damn. They want RE5 and don't care about moral responsibilties or accountabilites.

That's their porrogative but a company like capcom should know better. I think they knew exactly what they were doing releasing that trailer but I'm not impressed at all.

All you people lieing saying you're black and aren't offended or see nothing wrong with the trailer aren't fooling anyone. I may not be African American but I don't have to be. I'd be a fool to act like there was nothing wrong with that trailer. There's no way in hell I'd play that game around any of my friends that are from any ethnic background.

If capcom released an RE6 where the protagonist was of destinc Arabian decent and was sent into a very Jewish setting village killing women and children I'd definitly raise an eyebrow the same way I wouldn't touch a game that depicts a black protagonist killing a villians that are all seemingly Swedish looking with fair hair and blue eyes.

If you say you see nothing wrong with the trailer then you're either lying and disregarding your moral compass just cause you're need to play the game is of higher priorty than being accountable to certain morals or you're like a 10yrs old sheltered kid and don't fully understand the history of racisim that exsists prominantly in our current society.

Each to his/her own but there's no way I'd touch that game if the content of it still remains anything close that trailer, no way.

10 - I understand
where this can be viewed as racist but it just isn't. Capcom isn't a racist company with the sole purpose of glorifying white people and dehumanizing blacks. They make games that people want to play, since having a white protagonist is safe and the majority of gamers want a hero they can look up to(even in japan) or are comfortable with. Capcom doesn't want to take any chances and lose any of their demographic, in all honesty you prolly won't see a ethnic MAIN protagonist any time soon.I remember playing resident evil out break and there were two black protagonist but there were also plenty of white protagonist.Truth be told with the harsh stereotypes that black/Mexicans etc people have around the world we may not see a ethnic protagonist in a Japanese game other than Japanese and white for along time.

*crosses fingers for a good afro samurai game*

N'Gai doesn't have an issue with the game being set in Africa, his problem is with the presentation of the TRAILER. Many people will just see a white man shooting at a hoard of African villagers, cause essentially thats all the trailer is!

However, we don't know the context of the game - Chris might not be working alone, he might be saving people, the virus is the enemy not the actual people - the problem is, the trailer didn't show any of that it just showed crazy black people under mind control attacking a white guy (and unless you know the history of the resident evil series, the trailer doesn't show mind control well either).

Look, I think the trailer succeeds in portraying the frightening situation of being one man against overwhelming numbers(the whole point of Res Evil), but again, the numbers are Black! Like it or not, race - especially regarding blacks and whites, will stir up controversy and CAPCOM should have been more cautious in showing this idea to the public. Not compromise their vision, but just give more of a background to the setting.

Personally, I did not have a problem with the trailer, my first thought was this game looks F@%*ing hard and that the idea of a whole village of people turning against you was realised incredibly well! I mean, the game looks scary. My main beef was actually with Chris's uniform, it looks so out of place. Seriously, why the hell is his shirt so tight!

I read the whole article and I can see N'Gai point on some levels. He ins't saying the game is racist or that Capcom did this on purpose it's that in same eyes people can take it the wrong way.

I'm black myself and I wasn't offended, considering the setting and the history around zombies, voodoo, etc it only seems natural for Capcom to take it to that location.

We haven't even seen the rest of the game yet, that could only be on part of it, he could end up in New York or something but I'm still excited for the game and can't wait to see more.

Sorry but I believe the racist people are the ones making the distinction of colour to start with. You see a white guy killing a bunch of black guys. I see a sane guy defending himself from a bunch of crazy guys, and I dont care if they're black, white, brown, yellow or purple. A mob of hundreds rushes at me with intent to kill me and I have a gun in my hand then you can bet I wont be dying alone.

The game is set in Africa. Are there villages full of white people people in Africa? or are they mostly black. Because they are mostly black, should we not set a game in Africa? Was anyone upset when Rambo 4 decided a couple hundred Asians needed killing. I'm not worried about the themes in this game. It is only a game. Movies and books are allowed to touch sensitive issues like this and so should games be allowed if we want them to be taken seriously. For all we know maybe the game has a statement about the violence in Africa. More black people die in Africa everyday at the hands of other black men then we will ever get to kill in Resident Evil.

14.1 - well,yeah
if your color blind but to say that you don't see color isn't true. You can forget color but you can see it for example I see a tall guy I notice that hes white but I treat him no differently thats being aware of his culture and race. That doesn't make you racist at all, if you treat him differently because he was that color then its racist. It may be hard to understand where the writer is coming from but if you have no history with resident evil and you just watch the trailer the average person is going to make that assumption thats its racist black or an assumption along those lines. The trailer doesn't make anything obvious you can't tell that those people are zombies and you can't tell that the white guy with the gun is trying to help them. Anyone else will see these crazy black people in turmoil attacking this buff white guy with a gun. Some people might go on to say that the black people are protecting themselves while this solider is there to slaughter them. I on the other hand see the game for what it is a game but to say that no one will notice how the game will come off is naive. Seriously, fox is going to a have field day when this comes out.

That's why I am glad N'Gai wrote his take on it. Hopefully, if Fox does try to clusterf*ck the game, he and others with a sensible, honest view will speak out as well. I'm of mixed race and do feel I can see both points rather clearly. For most gamers and RE fans alike (myself included), we see and understand from jump what this game will be about. If you played RE4, you saw this as an enormous step forward graphically for the series. You also saw some stellar lighting and the over-the-shoulder view we've come to love. Race wasn't the focus. More than anything, the location intrigued us to where the story had gone. Chris was a welcomed sight even if he looked like the guys in high school you just wanted to hit in the mouth with a brick. But there is an opposite, a logical and honest opposite to that spectrum and it deserves to be acknowledged. There is the view that this is, in some way, is feeding the dirtiest part of our subconscious. That these people of color, regardless if they're African or Haitian, must die. Realistically, step back and look at the trailer. There is no identification of Chris as a cop or soldier or "hero". There is a village of people, damn near defenseless people, being murdered, We KNOW as gamers, this is not the case. We are the fortunate ones. I think Capcom has done ZERO wrong. Could the trailer have been constructed with more sensitivity towards not only the race, but the culture depicted? Sure. That's not a crazy thing to think.
