Xbox 360 Wii-mote Clone Confirmed? Code Named "Newton"

The blogger who first broke the news of Bungie's separation from Microsoft is now claiming to "confirm" the existence of the motion-sensing controller that is rumored to be in development.

Quote:
"The "Newton" controller's code name is after the physicist Sir Isaac Newton. The internal Microsoft engineering code name is for this controller is "Newton" as in Newtonian Physics relating to gravity, inertia and acceleration. This is not to be confused with the defunct Apple Newton PDA, this is just and internal name, when this controller comes to market it will have a retail name."

1.1 - Imitation is the best form of flattery after all.
I wonder about the compatability a controller like this will have with the games already out for the 360. Will it only work for specific "Box-mote" games; or will we be able to use it in games like Dead Rising, Bioshock, Gears...

... kinda makes me wonder if the sequel to Geometry Wars that got rated recently for Aussie-land and leaked might just be the Galaxies version that came out on the Wii.

1.2 - Re: That is the way of business
It is common in most industry to copy an existing design and improve on it. In fact most businesses that start with a new "revolutionary" idea tend to die a painful death. Nothing wrong with what MS is doing.

I commend them for copying. Otherwise we get the other criticism "why aren't MS implementing this technology, it has been out for xx number of years!"....

Think wii rip is only a good thing if it is a improvement of the Wii mote which I don't think is the cause.

With a cheaper xb360 arcade compared to an Wii this might actually be a smart move from microsoft

4 - Whats The Point Of This.......................
Microsoft should have consantrated on fixing the 360's hardware failure problem. No point in having this when your console is at Microsoft getting fixed most of it's life.

The 360 has a major problem...'RROD'

Rip of Wii Controls + 360 = Pointless!

@Silver360 - Yep, the japanese have been doing it for decades. Copy something that is successful, make it better and cheaper then sell loads.

@Marty - Ive been a 360 owner for 2 years, no RROD yet.

Back on topic, the Wiimote on 360 will be great. Why not have the great Wii controls on high-def online games, it should be great.

Though I admire your enthusiasm, the point of the controller is to compete directly with Wii games, so the emphasis here is definately on 'family' party games.
I worked on one of these as long ago as last november and am currently doing work on another. Neither title would be exciting to a 'core' gamer.
Maybe a few more interesting titles will surface, but from experience of whats in developement, I wouldn't bet on it.

There is a MAJOR problem with such addons

the only reason why the wiimote works is because its standard on the wii means that everygame will utilize it, bringinge out a wiimote to the 360 is a bunch of crap couse noone will bring out games for it except the one game bundled with the remote, simply because there will be a s to low install base on remotes.

I agree and i can still see the Wii being the console of choice for casual gamers as all the games use the technology. If Microsoft do this, this could be seen as leaving the hardcore gamers.

I think, people will see this remote and think... fine, why don't i just buy a Wii instead.

It will be a novelty, that's all. The Wii already has the install base and the only good games on there are made by Nintendo so you wont be seeing them on the 360. I think a huge majority of people will stick with what they know (they are casual after all) and buy a Wii instead. They will want to play with their mates who also have Wiis.

I think 360 owners who cant afford to buy a Wii will buy the remote but there wont be many more people choosing to buy the 360 thanks to this. Xbox could be facing an identity crisis.

"Casual or Hardcore? Oh wth i'll buy a PS3"

9 - we will see
it might be just like the wii remote but will it have the wii game titles that make wii so successful? it like having the 360 web cam, but have no games or quality of games. if 360 comes out with a wii interactive remote the better have some really fun and interactive games to follow.

Can't wait, their will be no need to buy a wii. Microsoft has to make sure to have a few games that use the remote as good as Wii Sports, and Smash Brothers.

this would be good for MS.

copy the wiimote w/sensor bar and sell it cheap with a game like X-sports.

then i hear rumors that blu-ray is getting built in. that would be good for people looking to buy a system this year and want blu-ray.

then you always hear rumors of the price drop.... when the hell is that going to happen already?

so...if everyhting works out like MS plans, they will have a system that has the benifits of ps3 (bluray) and the benifits of Wii (wiimote) and a good cheap price (price drop)

you gotta admit... IF this is all true, you gotta admit, MS sure is trying real hard to appeal to everyone!!...
