Grand Theft Auto 4 singleplayer takes 56 hours to finish
113
VGB reports that Jeronimo Barrera, a senior developer at Rockstar, says it takes testers playing 4 hours a day "a good 2 weeks to get through the whole single-player game." That means if they are playing a full week that's about 56 hours total.

1 - If you read the mag....
it takes the testers to complete only the main story arch around 56 hours to complete it.
They're pro's, do it for a living.
Secondly, this does not include side missions etc.
This game is going to be massive!
Exciting stuff!

1.1 - testers have to test all the game
so this includes the side missions!
beside they also check for each part of the city and with different things happened at the same place, so this can take longer time then someone just want to finish the game, so i say for those who want to finish the game so fast the will finish it in 2 days and those who want to enjoy the game and take it slowly probably will take then weeks of hours of playing each day!

1.5 - 56 hours.... LMAO thats pretty long thats perhaps the longest game of this gen so far
that i'll be playing till the release of Fallout 3, white knight story and final fantasy 13. reall 56s hours is probably the fastest you can finish it. i maxed out GTA san andreas at 94 hours with everything complete. To think that MS paid so much money for content that gonna hit in the fall and is gonna be even more expensive than your typical download on xbox live... at this point i think that extra content was a waste of money, they should have paid money to have the game as a timed exclusive instead cause it's gonna take a good while before anyone finishes the game let alone pay for more content when other big games are hitting the same time the new content hits.

1.9 - i was a game tester for over 3 years
and while, yes, we do test EVERYTHING in the game, including side-missions, we also have what is called a "complete playthrough."
where we basically play through the campaign mode, from beginning to end, and log how long it took us.
this generally means ignoring *ALL sidemissions/quests.
so while it may take 56 hours to complete the campaign mode in GTAIV, it probably doesn't include the side quests. which could take anywhere from 10-20 extra hours to complete.
in either case, GTAIV is such a massive game, i doubt i'll complete the campaign mode, because i get too sidetracked by other things to do. it's what makes GTA games so fun, and it's the element that most copy-cat games can't seem to get their heads around (ie, look at any Activision "open world" game, and there is literally *NOTHING to them but driving around and shooting. no interactivity with the world, little to no side-missions, unless it's lame races, etc. GTA has a plethora of things to do and discover).
in either case, GTAIV is going to be one of two games i WILL own by the end of this month: GT5 Prologue is the other.

2.1 - Well......
you can.
these guys are pros, the technical VP of Rockstar says they played it 4 hours a day, for 2 weeks. And that's just the main story arch.
It's not as random as you think, its like 48 hours to 100+ hours basically, add on just mucking around time and multiplayer, youve got yourself one hell of a solid game.
I haven't played a 20+ game in a while! this will be awesome!

no way they mean the game 100%. If they do then they cheated by using maps for hidden things.
I was at 84hrs at 98% completion for San Andreas without using a map. Now that I have a family this game may as well be 1000 hours long. I cant spend 2-3 hours a day playing, maybe an hour but its pry more like 6 hours a week.
So if I say its going to take me 70 hours to complete thats 12 weeks to completion and thats if I play no other games (MGS4), which I certainly will.

EDIT: @ Gamer Luv if you dont like GTA games then you dont need to be here commenting about GTA 4. You are just one of those guys who keep coming on these GTA 4 posts saying how overrated and over-hyped GTA games are and they are not that good. Well look if you dont like GTA games it's your business, but nodbody is forcing you to buy the game and you certainly dont need to be wasting time posting comments on a game that does not interested you. No one cares if you dont like GTA games, this subject is for people who do like GTA games and are anticipating GTA 4's release. If you dont like it then head to the exit man ----------->

56 hours of game play. Thats definatley worth every penny then. GTA4 fans will definately be in for a treat. I play games a few hours a week. So by the time I probaly get a quarter to half way through it the mega hit "MGS4" will be out, so I will bve splitting time between the two. Hopefully the downloaded content will be available a few months later and I can continue to play. I wonder how many hours the DLC will add to the original game. Anyone know?

I've never been a huge fan of GTA. Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed the past games, but never finished one.
But this game sounds so incredible. It's one of my most wanted this year. They have improved just about everything that I thought should have been better in the first ones (3 and up).
Halo on the other hand never caught my interest. I've gave it about a 4-5 hour shot before I decided to not waste more time on it.

It's going to take some people less than 50 hours to complete the game and it's going to take others over 100 hours. It will depend on how you play the game more than any sort of "skill level". Games like GTAIV are great for just goofing around doing whatever.

PS3 isn't that much more expensive than the 360
sure you can get the Arcade for pennies- but with no HDD to store key stuff, it becomes irrelevant- Pro is good, but it's only £100 cheaper than the PS3 which comes with Blu-Ray and stuff
as for the DVD thing- well no-one said that disk space relates directly to game longevity
but it does limit the devs ability to store things that make the game visually stunning, or technically impressive- you can do extensive compression to get all the GTA4 content onto a DVD disk, but as a result- the game ends up looking average graphically
DVD is good enough for now- but it will start to show it's age in a year or so
hell we already have games that sretch to 50gb

11.6 - That not what people mean
I dont think people are saying that xbox cant fit anymore than 15 hours into a game. That is not it at all. Its already done that with games like mass effect, too human, kotor and the like. What IS of concern to xbox fans is that xbox discs cant hold all the content the way it is to be intended on most games. GTA 4 I dont think is one of them but Im not sure. As far as I know the game will be fine on xbox. HOWEVER, with games like MGS4 and the like (Hideo Kojima says that 50 gigs is not enough space) you bet your ass xbox CANT fit these types of games on their discs. So for now I think xbox will be fine but in the future (very near future) xbox will HAVE to incorporate blu-ray or it will turn out to be another SEGA story and just be a software only based company.

that doesn't sound right, i guess 56 hours if you rush it
add in the exploration, side missions, pissing around with cheats etc and you will no doubt get well over 100hrs
and there's the multi-player
either way- GTA4 is only second to Oblivion in terms of value and longevity (and who knows, if the multi-player is addictive enough- it could exceed the MP-less Oblivion)

I think we should be careful not to equate length with quality. I don't think any of us should have cause to complain about getting their monies-worth out of GTAIV even if it only has as much content as San Andreas. I the multiplayer is good I'll probably put in more hours there than I do in most whole games.
I don't disagree that it would be cool to see this kind of game made with a 50 gig disc in mind, but I think we'll see what that can be like before too long.

The reason why the game is not as big as it should have been, is because the PS3 version was holding everything back.

PS3 exclusive titles had no trouble developing for the console. Resistance came out when the PS3 was released and it plays great. So you have all the information necessary to figure out you're wrong. Now if GTA5 was a PS3 exclusive it would also have been finished earlier, except it wouldn't be compressed to fit onto 2002 DVD technology.

I guess we will have to wait and see, considering they are launching the Social Club just in time for this game, and it will track players progress and stats. Only then will we see how long it actually takes someone to complete GTA:IV to 100% completion.
But like it said 56 hours to complete singleplayer not reach 100% completion, Remember how long San Andreas was for some and this is going to be a Epic of a game.

I don't know what GTA you have played, but for me that 56 hours is like months... because as soon as I complete a mission I feel the need to just go around the city driving and trying to get a high cop rating.
It took me forever to complete GTA3: Vice City, because I was too busy having fun driving all over the place and stealing cars to put in my garage and stuff. It never fails that at least half an hour goes to forming the absolute fool, instead of just doing the missions.
So I'm sure it's going to take months for me to finish this game, not to mention online multi-player and I will be playing GT5P and COD4 while trying to find free space for MGS4.
So no DLC (down loadable content) needed for me.. I'm going to have my hands full.

I hope you xflops cherish every hour of those 56 hours because that's like the only game you guys will have before fall. Ninja Gaiden 2 is going to be about 10 hours and it doens't cater to everyone who owns a xbox so that game doesn't count. Whereas us PS3 owners will have Gran Turismo Prologue, MGS4, GTA4, Haze etc. All those games have replaybility so PS3 has games and the 360 doesn't!

56 hours for the PS3 version
5 hours and 6 minutes for the 360 version.
I know for a fact that a large sum of stupid 360 owners are gonna get the RROD from playing the sh!tty 360 version on their crappy piece of so called "hardware", Xbox PleaseFixMe.
Happy gaming PS3 owners! Lets all enjoy Gran Turismo 5 Prologue for the time being while the XFags enjoy the "awesome" kingdom under fire.

11 - Oh wow.
I didn't know you could put a 56 hour game onto a DVD-9 disc. I mean only the true power of the Cell combined with the capacity of Blu-Ray could possibly produce a game such as this right???
LOL at all the Sony Scrotum Sniffers who believed that this game couldn't be done on the 360 using DVD-9.
Seriously. This is going to be a great game no matter which console you own I'm sure..
As for the 360 haters. I have 2 360's without RROD so I am good to go. I will be too busy racking up the "Achievements" to worry about when DLC is available.
Meanwhile the rest of you Playstation Polesmokers will still be waiting beyond for Home and your Achievement knockoff "Trophies". I wonder how long the PS3 pre-install will take this time. Or how many fps slower, missing colors, and textures the PS3 version will be missing. The best part is if you live in Europe you get to pay more for the inferior version.
Oh and F*CK OFF Sony for making your console so difficult to develop for, that this game was delayed in the first place. Tired of the PS3 holding the 360 back...

11.1 - i can imagine..
the meeting between MS and Rockstar went a little something like this:
Rockstar: OK, so like we're developing this new GTA game and I hear you want it released on the 360.
MS: YES!!!! We want it.
Rockstar: It's going to be huge, will require 20GB of storage.
MS: (feeling insecure) Ummm, we only have DVD-9.
Rockstar: Dude, no way!! Didn't the PS2, which was released about 8-9 years ago, use DVD-9?
MS: (feeling stupid for using such old technology) So, can you put GTA4 on DVD-9 or not?
Rockstar: No, I don't think so.
MS: How's $50 million dollars sound?
Rockstar: Sold. We'll take it and cut corners, re-use textures, and make it look gimped err I mean current.
MS: (Mr. Burns impression) Excellent!
Edit: (follow-up meeting)
Rockstar: (calling up MS) Hey, what should we do with this extra content that won't fit on your 8 track errr I mean DVD-9?
MS: (thinking) Hmm, we can put it on XBL and charge for it and claim it's exclusive to the 360.
Rockstar: But but but, that same content could have easily fit on Blu-ray and so much more.
MS: Shut up!! Don't you EVER speak of the "b" word ever again. We know the future belongs in downloadable content. We plan on releasing HD movies all gimped out and claim it's the same as physical media. These poor suckers won't care, they put up with shoddy engineering with the 360 so they're used to getting ripped off and burned.
Rockstar: Whatever, just send us the check.

11.2 - pimp daddy??
does your brain contain enough neurons to realize what had to be done to fit all that into your crappy dvd???
They had to compress all the information and therefore reduced the quality of just about everything...sure you guys get a couple more hours of gameplay but guess what, we get a superior version of the REAL GAME!! and all the aditional content for home so enjoy your SD upscaled version of GTA4.
STROTEE: you forgot something
MS: so that's it no blowjob???
Rockstar: Blowjob??
MS: Damn you're way nicer than those guys at capcom and Ubisoft thanks again...

11.3 - Ha
Good stuff guys. But the bottom line is that the 360 was the lead platform. Sony had to send thier "experts" to help Rockstar optimize the game because it was running like A$$ on the PS3. The agreement was that both the 360 and PS3 version had to launch at the same time. So who really held the game back???
Don't point the finger at DVD-9. So far in more than 2 years DVD-9 has been fine. In fact only 2 360 games have gone multidisc. Both were JRPG's loaded with cutscenes and made by the same Japanese Developer.
Bottom line is that Blu-Ray was included for HD movie playback. Sony could have easily gone with DVD-9 instead. Maybe used the money they saved on Blu-Ray and invested it in something more developer friendly than the Cell. Maybe some more RAM or a more powerful GPU. You know things that actually matter and can't be overcome unlike storage space where you just do multiple discs.
Like I said the 360 and Wii prove that Blu-ray isn't needed this generation. Check back with me in 5-10 years when the new consoles are out that actually can do 1080P or higher resolution justice. Because as it stands now the PS3 and 360 are still stuck in 720P with the limited RAM they have.
Good job though with the comeback. Made me smile. Now try better fellas...

11.4 - what can i say
about someone that has a picture of a PS3 used as a grill. However i like the way you express your opinion without really insulting anybody. i do believe that blue-ray is necessary to improve the gaming experience, just look at MGS4 how many discs would have been necessary for the 360?? or how much compressed information?? which reduces quality.
