Game over for Halo movie?

Both Universal and Fox Studios have pulled out of the Halo movie adaptation, citing rising movie costs and concern over the inexperience of first time director Neil Blomkamp. As the budget was rumored to be edging closer to $200 million, and Microsoft getting a lion's share of the profits, the studio execs decided it was time to pull the plug.

Note: This isn't to say the movie still couldn't get made. Jackson is still attached and pre-production continues on the film, although without a studio home it now faces a serious uphill battle.

Why in the world they decided to hire a director of a web based film (which sucked anyway) is still a mystery to me.

Peter Jackson should have remained at the helm. If he did, this budget would not be questioned.

I was somewhat looking forward to a big screen Halo production. A modern day Aliens with a bigger budget and better effects.

MS why don't you call up James Cameron, I am sure he would be willing to hook this up.

...most likely nobody has any idea how the film "would have" been.

All you can speculate is that with Peter Jackson involved, it would have/will have a solid effort behind it. How can you judge a piece of work before it's even created? Would have been good, would have been bad...who cares? If you want the film, go show your demand for it, and it will be made.

What peeves me is that people say MSFT should just fund it themselves b/c they have the financial resources. First, they're not in the film industry, so having all the funds in the world won't ensure that you can produce and distribute a film successfully. Second, the notion that MSFT should fund the movie themselves just because they can afford to do so is ludicrous. Those deep pockets they have? The wouldn't have them if their mentality was as elementary as "spend b/c we can." But they do have those deep pockets b/c consumer have that mentality...go fig.

Sony funds movies, and their company's net profit per year is about a quarter of Microsoft's- if that, given new forecasts from Sony execs.

So how exactly can Microsoft not fund this? Not to mention Peter Jackson and WETA are already invested... WETA alone makes enough bank to finance this movie without issue, I'm sure.

The point isn't that MSFT can't fund it, but that they aren't in the film business whereas Sony has a dedicated arm in the industry. That isn't to say thay MSFT can't enter the industry as well, but it would be a bold if not precarious for a primarily software company to suddenly expand into that area for the sake of a single title. Their shareholder probably wouldn't be too happy, either. Sure, HALO is a great and profitble franchise, but I think Microsoft should stick to their software business.

I just find it amazing that Fox piles millions and millions of dollars into crap movies like Aliens Vs Predator, X-Men 3, Fantastic Four etc but won't invest in a movie that is a sure fire hit.

Peter Jackson was a nobody when he directed Lord of the Rings, and look what happened there. I'm sure Peter has made the right chose in chosing Neil, and with a great script and WETA this will be a cracker!

There are no sure things in movies for one, in addition essentially every movie costs "millions and millions" the question is whether they can make back the amount of money that goes into it. Keep in mind that towards the end of the summer Pirates 2 was only just approaching the $200,000,000 mark and was on its way out of theaters. ANY movie studio is hesitant to spend upwards of about $200 million because the chances they make it back can be fairly slim. Gamers alone can not power ticket sales for movies. Not only were the costs of the movie expensive as well, but from what was reported shortly after its announcement, the script was highest priced movie script in history. There are simply too many variables for it to make business sense considering the cost...

As for the numbers, it GROSSED $420 million in the US over its entire theater run...it actually grossed 1 billion worldwide, but the point still stands as this is an anomaly, its is the record holder by far, and no movie based on a game has EVER done well at the box office

Given how much control MS has on this I highly doubt they will let this go the way of Doom the movie. I am very confident you will see a movie on the epic scale of Star Wars/Lord of the Rings. Remember, the story itself is already on an epic scale, the special effects given the budget are sure to be...really its the acting that is key for this movie to hit a homerun. All the elements are in place other than that final and most important peice.

Yeah we could have the Chief riding a ghost next to a covonant ship with the flight of the bumblebee music.
He then jumps off the bike and pulls out a katana, he slices his way through hundreds of grunts and finally comes across a gold elite protecting the prophet.
A the end he pulls out a pistol and aims it at the prophets head, speaking slowly with a cigarette stuck up a vent somewhere on his suite. He fires causing the prophets head to explode, blood flies everywhere. He makes his exit in a black sedan with the gold elite in the boot, he then rolls the elite down the hill to the hospital.
All the while a marine has been making out with an elite called 'Goldie' who then disappears. The marine meets up with Goldies twin and they kill the group who made goldie disappear.
Meanwhile the chief is wearing his suite which has been sprayed yellow with two black stripes and is riding a ghost. He tries to kill a phrophet living in an old dropship but get shot with a shotgun. He then wakes up burried alive! He uses his stregnth to 4 inch punch his way out of the coffin and goes back to kill th prophet.
While this was going on the marine is being executed in the electric chair. He dies after two sessions saying "is that all you've got?"

Yeah i think the idea is good.
