Missing Marine Found Dead… COD4 May Have Triggered Combat Flashback

A badly-wounded Iraq War veteran, missing since February, has been found dead inside a culvert in Charlotte County, Florida, according to Indiana's News and Tribune.

24-year-old Eric Hall, still suffering from grievous combat wounds as well as post-traumatic stress disorder had previously caused a traffic accident in his native Indiana after hallucinating an Iraqi roadblock and may have experienced a flashback of some sort.

I blame the Military Health Care System, I mean just look at all the stories about the Walter Reed Medical Center. Our Soldiers deserve the best of care for what they went through. And this would not had happened if he had received the best of care and attention he needed. Videogames had nothing to do with it, it's just a very easy scapegoat for the time being.

While it is easy to condemn the military medical community, it actually starts further up the chain than that. I'm not going into the politics of this. I only hope his family can hope to live with what has happened to their boy. This hits close to home for me and I really hope that none of my fellow N4G gamers (including those of you who get on my last nerve!) never have to go through something like this. Remember our vets!

You also have to understand that, while the health care system isn't at it's best. Sometimes folks just don't get better, sometimes war is to much for them. They can never fully adjust to civilian life again. You may put all the blame on the Health care, but know that the Human mind can be a terrible thing. Since I'm A Military Historian, many folks ask me what weapon do I see as the greatest and most devastating. I always answer the Human mind.

This situation is just sad, especially for his family. But Uncle Sam probably should have taken better care of its wounded veterens.

I was playing Pokemon Red when I had a flashback to the time I used to capture my cat under a plastic bin and then train him to fight other cats in easily narratable, but deadly combat.

The worst of this is going to come when someone tries to use this in their anti-video game agenda. I hope that this doesn't happen, but I wouldn't put it past some the people out there. Especially since it takes the blame off the government.

The game was probably the cause. Many things can trigger something in returning vets. I remember hearing my friend talking about his grandfather losing it after hearing popcorn popping.

They would have to put that on almost everything. Plastic guns, popcorn, fireworks, it would be insane. Hell, I bet a hailstorm could probably trigger a flashback. If his family knew he was messed up that bad, he did cause a traffic accident due to a flashback earlier, why the hell would they let him play that!

@11.2 COD4 has a very engrossing story mode, and many of the people you fight alongside die. It would not be too difficult for it to cause a flashback, especially since the settings are similar.

11.4 - c-redz
Now I'm not talking about this case specifically, this very easily could have triggered a flash back but people who blame video games are looking for a scape goat. Usually they are crappy parents or politicians who are looking to get re-elected. They want to place the blame on the game industry instead of placing some accountability on the individuals who commit the crimes.

12 - This is very sad...
It's extremely difficult to tell how war will affect people, even "battle hardened" soldiers. My nephew is currently on his second tour in Iraq. He has discussed some of the terrible things he's experienced; including watching his friend and squad leader get killed, and getting shot through his backpack. Despite that, he's now a squad leader, and was actually excited to go back when the time came. The story of this Marine is truly awful. I feel terrible for his family and friends, and I have the utmost respect for our military personnel. That being said, I don't think it's necessarily right to try and spin this as being a negativity ad towards video games. It's unfortunate.

13 - I hate to say it.
I think video games might be responsible for this one. Not on their own, of course, but they could've caused the flashback.

Everybody is different. Some people, no matter what therapy they get, can't get past killing so many other human beings. My grandpa wakes up whimpering at night and twitches all over the place, and he STILL gets therapy. Hes even got medicine for it.

On that level in COD4 when you had to fly in the plane and bomb the people down below, I actually felt sick. The black and white made it look just like footage you see. I had to have my brother get me past that level.

Everybody is different, and I think in this case it was the war AND video games that caused this. You can't expect video games to have NO negative impact on anyones lives in this way. It's unrealistic.

Video games are good fun, but everything has the occasional downside. To say video games couldn't have caused this is ignorance.

People die playing sports like football(NFL), but that doesn't make football a bad thing. I think it would be nice if gamers stopped defending games to such an extreme, and instead accepted that some bad things can come from them. Our main arguement for pro-video games should be that everything has a downside sooner or later, and video games seem to have less of a downside than most things.

P.S. I'm not saying that everything they accuse video games of causing is REALLY caused by them. I'm just saying that, some of the time, it might be the case.

In the end, it's all down to the person. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Video games don't kill people either. Sometimes things just serve as aids towards atrocities. We, as intelligent people, should realize and accept this.

P.P.S - This really sucks. I hate it when things like this happen. Condolences to everybody he knew personally. Ughhhhh stories like this put me in such a bad mood.

13.2 - You raise some good points...
and I agree that COD4 may have had a direct impact on what happened in this situation. But, like you said, bad things do happen. They happen everywhere in life. But, using the example you brought up about football, when someone gets paralyzed or killed playing football, you don't hear the same demand to rate, ban, or censor the sport like you do with video games. This case seems to be slightly different in that it mentions, not blames, the fact that he was playing a video game when his apparent flashback was triggered. Either way, it's understandable how it happened, and unfortunate that it did happen. The guy was in a war and saw terrible things. COD4 is a very realistic and intense game. But, did it "cause" this to happen? No, the war did. Was it a catalyst to the situation? Sure.

13.3 - I know
Video games didn't CAUSE this, they AIDED it. I'm not trying to put down video games, I'm just saying that they triggered the flashback, and he probably shouldn't have played a war video game so soon after coming back from war and seeing his BEST FRIEND DECAPITATED.

I know mulitple things come into play here, and that video games didn't mess him up. I know that blame can't be placed on any one thing. I also know that without COD4 and a controller in this guys hand he might still be alive. It makes me so mad to see something like this happen and then notice how other people find it more important to say MY FAVORITE VIDEO GAME DIDN'T DO THAT!!! when in reality all the article says is that the video game triggered a flashback. <-PERFECTLY REASONABLE!
Edit: Cain, above^ isn't targeted at you at all. I totally agree with what you say, and realize that this article isn't 'blaming' video games. I'm probably getting a bit too worked up, but I get moody sometimes with these kind of stories.

I wouldn't be surprised if COD4 made a soldier lose it, just the other day my cousin came over for a visit and I was playing COD4 on the first desert map in campaign. He said it reminded him of when he was in Iraq, except he said the fear is 10000x worse and it's more tragic than COD4 even tried to make it. After that he wouldn't look at the TV screen while I was playing COD4, of course I turned the game off so he wouldn't be uncomfortable.

Could COD4 trigger a flashback? Yes. Could it make the marine leave his house and disappear? If he wanted to get away from the thought and remembrance, then yes. However, the way this article is written is saying COD4 is the whole reason for him hallucinating an Iraqi roadblock, which is clearly not the case.

Poor guy, I feel sorry for him and his family. I hope everything gets better soon.
