Kotaku writes:

We wrote earlier today of the issues surround the Xbox 360 version of Bully: Scholarship Edition, hoping to get a statement from Rockstar Games on the status of either a fix or a replacement plan for those affected.

4.1 - GTA IV should be safe, unless they want to go bankrupt
I guess now we see why GTA IV was given 6 months more time, they can't afford to make that mistake with this game. And to think the game has been finished since December or so and all they've been doing since is beta testing for bugs. For the hope of GTA to not get bought out by EA, the game must be released nearly flawless.

I like rockstar but look at them tryin to dump this on older 360 ther all the same just different size chips, causing less heating, power consumption etc.

6 - At least they have enough integrity to man up to the situation
day one. They didn't wait 18 months to address the issue half-heartedly. The same can not be said for the company behind the system it runs on.

some people could learn from this. Mistakes happen but how they are dealt with is important. Im sure they'll fix it as soon as they can

7 - R* kicks SO much ass
This is why I like these guys. They noticed the errors, and instantly said what they're going to do about it. They didn't act dumb, they didn't just make feeble excuses. They simply acknowledged the issues and said they'd sort them out. And people ask why I support R*. Can there be any question as to why?

They didn't have a choice. It is like the Red Ring of Death. When it keeps jumping off the floor and punching you and your customers in the face there comes a time, no matter how late, where you just can't deny the proof that says you made a crappy product.

9.1 - Oh, boo hoo.
You complain about R* making the game, seeing that it has errors, and instantly announcing that they're going to fix it, but a company that makes a console, knowing it has errors, fears class action lawsuits against them, and begrudgingly adds a warranty is okay?

Shut the hell up.

Actually agree with Blademask on this one. Developers like EA(who frequently release games full of bugs) need to develop their products better.

9.5 - agreed blademask + Jenzo
they have the resources to spot these issues even if they are stretched with the development of more important games. Maybe it was a time restraint or contractual deadline. Things like this, although scorned upon, are commonplace in the games industry so we should not be too shocked

9.6 - I was not "bashing" the 360
I was simply making a comparison, and pointing out the flaw in this argument. Bugs happen. It is a nearly inevitable part of coding a complicated piece of software. There have been bugs in games since there were games period.

On the PC, this has never really been much of an issue since the internet has been around. A game has noticeable bugs? Release a patch, and they go away. For the consoles, for the most part, there has been little they could do.

This generation, all the major consoles have internet connectivity, which gratefully has put them in the same category in this case as most PC games; they can be patched.

Now, I'm not giving R* a free pass for releasing a buggy game, but I think the response to the problem has more merit than the problem itself. The reason I don't give MS the same credit is because they spent forever denying the problem before they reluctantly did something to attempt to correct it. R* acknowledged and promised to correct the problem the instant they found out about it.

11 - I don't make games...
...but I AM a programmer. And you know, sometimes stuff just happens. It sounds to me that there is a possibility that first gen XBOX 360s MIGHT be slightly different than later gen XBOX 360s. Perhaps the RROD issue was more than just a processor overheating, and maybe Microsoft made some other tweaks to try to resolve the issue. In the process, maybe the newer gen XBOX 360s have slightly better performance or a slightly different driver for a piece of hardware. Maybe the first gen chips run at a higher temperature and perhaps at a higher temperature the processor might have a tendency to buckle under an extremely heavy load.

Anything is possible, and it is quite likely that what Rockstar says is true. Perhaps they only have later gen XBOX 360s for their QA team. Maybe they never saw any of these problems during testing and are truly "horrified" to find out that there are quality problems with their product.

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, especially considering that they aren't just trying to sweep this under the rug and claim that the reports of performance issues are just false rumors.

However, now that they have come clean... they need to investigate this... and once the issue is fixed, they need to admit to whether or not the problem is found to be with their coding or with a Microsoft issue. And if it turns out to be a Microsoft issue, I really hope Microsoft owns up to it. If they don't, it is very likely Rockstar won't be too pleased with this. Microsoft will start alienating developers and will lose more and more quality games to the PS3.

P.S.: I really hope Rockstar isn't just using dev kits in their QA team, because that isn't a true test.

You don't use dev kits for the QA team. You use debug units. Big difference.

If there are known differences in HW versions, the responsibility falls on the QA team to test across those differences. A good QA team should have a reasonable representation of the spectrum of HW/SW that the software will run on. Considering we are talking about HW revs, then they have no excuse not to test them.

How has R* already determined the problem is only with older 360's or is that just PR talk to hide the fact the product was poorly tested?

If they aren't testing Bully on older 360's they probably aren't testing GTA on them either.

It's quite odd if there are so big differences in the later modells that it actually effects performance this much. Sounds a bit off to me.
I too think that R* might be clean on this one. They surely have RODd their first consoles (think about the amount of use these consoles must get) and are testing on newer ones.

@ 11.2 How could they have all the nececcary HW revs if they have RODd? How could they possibally know there are so big differences on HW revs? MS told them or what?

Glad they're aware and working on a fix, but it sure seems like patches and updates to games are becoming the norm rather than an exception. It's nice that the option is there, but it does make you wonder if the developers are relying on it a bit too much...

totally agree.

it is becoming something of a norm.

which is a shame....now i think about it though, i guess when you look at everything that goes into the games these days, there is a lot more that can break or go wrong.

still, they really should know by now that most gamers would rather wait for a quality product then buy a game that is broken and get patch after patch to fix it.

I'm baffled... frame-rate issues, audio glitches and freezes but only on older consoles?!?

The only thing I think of is perhaps it's something to do with wear and tear on the DVD-ROM drives.

My PS3 version works fine....I mean my PS2 version upscaled on my backwards compatible PS3 works fine....IM KIDDING...settle down xboxers its a joke. I'll get disagrees I'm sure. Anyway, there is NO excuse for this to happen, R* should be doing their QA with way more QUALITY. I worked in the industry and when our studio QA'd titles they were tested on different generations of PS2 & Xbox systems to make sure you didn't have this happen. Different chips in different system configurations will always react differently to certain code. On a side, I didn't think the game was that great to begin with...hope it gets fixed for you guys

Look I enjoy reading about the drama in the gaming world as much as anybody, when I read the headline of this story, I literally sprayed orange juice out of my nose in amusement. Lol, the headline on this story is why this site can't be taken seriously.

If R* is horrified by what they released to the public after 4 years of having the IP, just imagine how they view the people that actually believe this garbage. Lol, horrified...yeah,me too...

22 - Like I said before, Xbox 360 gamers are just a focus group for sony!
Rockstar is just test running that old dvd player of a console. They know xbox gamers buy anything so they need that money to make better blu-ray games. Face it, Developers are all thinking blu-ray right now so they dont have a problem putting out garbage on the xbox. Also, I would like to add that i just received my dual shock 3 from japan thru ebay into my hands and I gotta say that uncharted is 10x better with rumble guys. I just saved a bunch of money on my playstation 3 since I dont get nickeled and dimed on xbox live anymore. RAM MAGNUMS HAS SPOKEN... AND HAS USED HIS MONEY WISELY TO GET RUMBLE!!!

Hmmm...

For everyone defending R*, my question is HOW could quality control not catch this ? Did they just port it & not even test it ONCE ? Of course they are owning up to it, it so bad they cant deny it or play dumb....

I dont understand why ppl defend developers or the console manufactors when they obviously lie or 'act dumbfounded' when their game runs poorly...

They ALL know exactly what they'er doing & what the true problems are... stop lying to yourselves... If R* didnt KNOW what the problems were prior to release then that says they never tested the game AT ALL, which is almost worse than the flaws themselves - what does that tell you about your beloved company ? Lol, what a joke... they'er f*ckin' "horrified"... how about the ppl who *paid* for this game ???

Sounds like Windows Vista with the "let customers find the problems" crap.

Makes you wonder sometimes which is more important to a company; making quick money OR producing quality hardware/software.

I also agree they should test their products 100% (not 99%) before releasing it; I understand there's going to be some problems however something so obvious or common shouldn't be allowed to pass inspection, or provide some sort of disclaimer saying "Not guaranteed to work with all models."
