Microsoft Forced Removal of Online Level Sharing in N+ - 'We Were Devastated,' Says Co-Creator

N+ always intended to let players upload custom levels for anyone to download, but Microsoft nixed the feature at the last second.

The decision was so last second, in fact, the version of N+ available on Partnernet, a test version of Xbox Live that publishers and select media can access, actually includes this feature. MTV Multiplayer wondered why a small studio like Metanet Software would bother investing in such an ambitious feature if they had any suspicions it wouldn't make the cut.

Too bad the exclusivity clause in their XBLA contract will prevent them from releasing this game on the PSN anytime soon.

3 - This is bad news.
MS has their grip so tight on XBL that they willing to give their gamers a less then best experience. These are the kinds of things that make me favor the PS3 more.

Sometimes I wonder just wth MS is thinking sometime. They touted all this "shared content" talk at the launch of the 360 but the PS3 has already eclipsed it with UT3 mod's alone.

These kinda of moves aren't going to win it any favor in the gaming community or in sales.

You'll never see a game like LBP on Xbox. I swear M$ squeezes your tit and doesn't let go.

With all this talk of DLC on GTA4, Sony should just totally trump M$ and get R* to give mod support for GTA. Can you imagine it? Cars, weapons, new areas, mission, muliplayer modes. The things you could do in that city boogle the mind. C'mon Sony and R*. Mods for GTA.

7 - I love how they claim "Xbox Live is the best online platform"
and offers "Unlimited freedom to developers" in their presentations for the games industry, and then nix community-based features in the background. Microsoft only wants to Xbox Live users to experience content produced by Microsoft's platform, XNA. They could care less about gamers and developers, as evidenced by their other decision to prevent 360 owners from ever experiencing mods and free levels in Unreal Tournament 3.

7.2 - Having hundreds of XNA-developed titles
Doesn't mean much when Microsoft is only comfortable publishing 4 or 5 of them. Also, your claim that "PC mods can be full of viruses and crap" is actually Impossible, and a weak argument against the huge amount of creative, free content created by the Mod community. Mods can consist of custom maps, adjustments to gameplay aspects (such as the Gears of War style camera I use in UT3 on my PS3), or mods that change the entire game (very rare, but very cool).

And before I pummel you, I gotta say...you need to learn how to argue.

"You complain about xna for not having certain features.. yet Sony, Nintendo and others don't have anything that allow regular people to make their own games..."

-In fact, I made no such claim. Also, I'd like to know which "certain features" you were referring to. Sony and Nintendo actually do have Development SDKs, and they can be purchased for varying dollar amounts. Sony also has the Phyre Engine available for purchase, which definitely helps smaller teams adjust to PS3 architecture.-

"Please don't tell me that you can't tell the difference between a map editor tool and XNA... can you make a flying game, sport games with UT map editor?"

-Actually, a Map Editor simply makes maps. UT3 (PC) comes with the tools needed to modify the engine, though publication of that mod for commercial rather than community purposes requires formal licensing of the Unreal Engine. A Map Editor is also included, though you're better off using a tool such as Lightwave or Maya for building the level data, and then importing the mesh and texture data into the editor.-

"ohhhh wow! I can make a map... why by the way.. means you have to buy UT for the PC which comes with the map editor... and buy the PS3 version to allow you to upload the maps..."

-Nope. All you need is a copy of Unreal Tournament 3, regardless if it's the PC or PS3 version. I only own the PS3 version, and I'm running mods without a hitch.-

"Microsoft had lots of problems with security in the past..."

-And they still do, even on Xbox Live, despite the fact that it's a closed network.-

"Fine, let's talk about XBox live arcade vs PSN.... should we... so, when was the last time that a game was released for PSN?"

-Last week.-

"how comes games are not released on regular basis?"

-Game development's tough, and the market isn't as saturated as the movie industry. Sony and Microsoft don't force developers to release their titles earlier or later than necessary simply to fill up an empty slot in the month. It's about quality.-

"The PS3 has a large enough installbase to sell xbox live arcade - like games... why aren't developers making as many games?"

-There's around 80+ PSN titles in development right now.-

"developers making games for xbox live arcade don't seem to be paying much attention to PSN... are they?"

-I don't see many PSN developers creating titles for Xbox Live Arcade, and I really don't see how that would work out since multiplatform development is so expensive. I do believe Capcom is releasing a Street Fighter title on both PSN and Live Arcade, though the Live Arcade version is currently being downgraded in order to quality for Microsoft's 150MB size limit.
