New Details on 360 Failure Rates Report

A few weeks ago 1UP reported that warranty service SquareTrade had compiled its console system warranties to arrive at a 16.4% failure rate for Xbox 360 systems. Today, 1UP got more details on the statistical breakdown. Put on your pocket protectors, kids: it's time for some math.

So, in other words, this was a really awful survey that told us absolutely nothing for a couple of reasons:

1) It only counted 360's returned through a certain warranty company - not one sent directly to Microsoft
2) It only tracks up to 10 months after the warranty purchase. Many consoles will fail AFTER this period of time

I always thought that the 16.4% failure rate sounded incredibly low, and now I know why. Most people who get a RRoD are going to contact Microsoft directly due to their 3-year warranty on the issue. This theory is furthered by the article mentioning that only "60%" of the failures were the RRoD, and the rest were "disc read errors, video card failures, hard drive freezes, power issues, and disc tray malfunctions." Clearly, overall, more than 60% of the 360 failures are RRoD related. This means that if all, or even most, people with this warranty who got the RRoD were going through the company (instead of through Microsoft) then the percentage would be far higher than 60%.

I'm not sure if anyone could follow that little mini-rant, but the bottom line is that the survey is next-to worthless, and that the failure rate is almost certainly closer to the original 33% estimate at a MINIMUM. My guess is that it's much higher - there's one or more designs flaw that *will* cause a RRoD in all 360's, given enough time.

Say what you will about the PS2 RDE days, but it's nothing compared to this. Nothing. A billion dollar company with the size and resources of Microsoft should never, ever release a product this faulty - and that's the bottom line.

It's a huge, ugly stain on what would otherwise be a very solid console. You should never have to tell a friend "Well, I'd recommend this game console, but, uh, it will probably die before you have it for a year. I mean, they'll fix it for free, but still..."

Such a shame.

Funny thing is if I was to make a survey out of the people I know it would be 17 out of 17 (including myself), so 100% failure rate.

Yeah, as I've said before and stand by, the two big mistakes MS made with the 360 were the RRoD and the lack of a standardized HD in all models.

They took one of the few things the original XBox did right and "corrected" it. It's a shame, because they really did fix most of their other mistakes from their first attempt at joining the console world.

It's sad, but entirely believable. Most of my friends aren't into gaming, but of the few I know who own 360's, all of theirs have died, my own included. I think I know one person online whose hasn't yet.

Actually, now that I think about it, there are two friends of mine whose 360 hasn't died, but he just got them in November and December, so that doesn't really count.

1.5 - i'm tired of these stories
i'm a big sony supporter, i've had to replace 2 360s, but enough is enough!

everyone knows the 360 is the most unreliable system ever built. we know that, everyone knows that. we all know MS lied about the failure rates, what do you expect them to say?

why do we have to keep reading the same thing over and over? if people are foolish enough to keep buying and putting money into a faulty system, let them.

i'm tired of reading about how everyones 360 breaks down. MS doesn't care and neither do i. i want to hear about games, not the % of broken 360s. i already know how many........alot.

sorry for the rant

I agree, it is a shame. Mine has died once, my friends has died twice and another friends has died once. However it's only a couple of weeks without it until it comes back fixed again.

I don't think the RROD is adding to sales figures though as people speculate. I can't see that many people just buying another without getting Microsoft to do something about it first?? Maybe I'm wrong...

i disagree.

lots of people aren`t aware of the seriousness of these problems.

the more the better, this problem need to STOP someway, somehow.

and this kinda of MEDIA attention is the only way, since MSFT won`t write it on the box.

2nd thought.

MSFT should be FORCED to write something on the box about it, at this point.

i know, but i've put the 360 behind me. i enjoyed a few games, and enjoyed the features i offers. but i refuse to put up with this bs. i won't get another until this is completely resolved, and maybe never.

i don't think anything short of the government or better business bureau mandating a 360 recall will make MS move their feet on this issue.

they're already planning for the 720 or whatever. its a done deal and i plan on doing most of my gaming on PS3 and PSP for the next few years.

The methodology used for the survey makes the results useless. I'm sure if they'd published these facts with the original 16% number no one would have taken them seriously.

Looks like a very ambitious project and if done right this will be the PS3's more exciting version of Fable 2 and Alan Wake. And no wonder this game has been under wraps for a long time and this would be a nice surprise for late 2008.

I don't think people are actually relising how ridiculous the failure rate is. Seriously, how the hell are Microsoft getting away with this? The PS3 and Wii both have failure rates well within 1%, but the 360? Oh, man. I thought consumers would have learned enough by now to not buy second-rate hardware, but obviously not. Well, more fool them. I no longer own a 360, so I no longer have to worry about my console crapping out on me whenever I play it.

EDIT: I just realised I called myself a fool, since I bought a 360. Ah, nevermind.

BUT... I'm fed up of reading people say this:

I could care less

There are two reasons for this.

1)It is I couldn't care less. If you could care less the point you are making makes no sense. If you couldn't care less then I understand what you are saying.

2)If you couldn't care less then why bother entering a post just to say so.

The only reason I posted this is because it really annoys me each time I see it.

Please apply your wonderful logic to such statements as, "I should be so lucky."

It's called sarcasm buddy. I could care less is now, rightfully or wrongfully, widely used and essentially accepted.

EDIT: Since I got a disagree for just that one example ( I could care less about disagrees :P btw., I find them amusing). "Fat chance." "Thanks a lot" while rolling your eyes.

I accept I couldn't care less is accepted. But I could care less makes no sense and is totally incorrect. What you are trying to say and what you are actually saying is two different things.

I should be so lucky makes sense.

just for info I didn't disagree with you... also.. the examples you are now lisitng are sarcasm. We brits know a lot about this. However I couldn't care less is not such an example. It is just a phrase meaning I don't give a sh1t...

"I could care less" when you coulnd't care less.
"I should be so lucky" when you feel you really would never be so luck."
"Fat chance" when you really have no chance.
"Tell me about it" when you don't want them to, because you already know about it.

See a pattern there? Anyways, we're off topic, so let's get back on topic. WE know the real travesties of internet language. It's when internet users use "loose" instead of 'lose' my god that kills me. Oh and it's "might as well" not "mind" or "mine"

Deadly has a point. When I see/hear "I could care less" the idiot flag goes up immediately. When taken literally, if one could care less, then one must care at least a little. People really don't think anymore. They seem to just go with the flow, following those around them.

Hehe...People use these a lot too.

either way you want to look at it, they had to rush it out ahead of ps3. and for all intent purposes, their plan worked.

you do realize the 360 is going into this gen race against the past 2 gen leader, Sony. And when there is a difference of 100 millions consoles in last console race, getting to the market first was their only option.

do you really think the 360 would have stood a chance against ps3 is they would have released on same day? hell no.

did they convert alot of sonyfans, sony exclusives and developers? hell yeah.

beleive me, M$ went into this next gen with the mentality that they would lose, just without that HUGE gap in sales this time around.

Last gen they learned... they need to own the design
This gen they learned... dont rush the design

Look I see where you are coming from but considering the horrendous quality of this console and the consistentency with which microsoft has ignored this issue do you really think people are going to buy the next one? Even if they launch a high quality console years before sony releases their next do you think people will forget the travesty that was the 360? All of the gamers in this generation that bought the 360 despite these issues just basically funded their next console. In my opinion microsoft just slapped all of their consumers in the face, and considering they actually have competition in this market the consumers have alternatives.

what you dont realize is that M$ is in it for the long haul.
They got deep pockets, they are smart guys that wont be making the same mistakes and there will be a next console with awesome exclusives that wont be found on the ps4, just like this console.

For that reason, gamers will buy the next console, for the games. there will be more Halo's and more Gears, my two fav IPs.

sony held the #1 spot for 2 gens, with the ps2 at almost 100milion more sold than xbox, so for the 360 to be beating the ps3 at this point is a win no matter how you look at it.

7 - What cracks me up are the fanboys that defend MS
Guess what? If people didn't complain about its horrid build quality you wouldn't have gotten the warranty extended to 1 year (people seem to have forgotten that the original warranty was a lousy 3 months in the US. I believe Europe has a law in place that forced MS to give them 1 year to start with) and then later to 3 years. You should be thanking the people that complained and got you a 3 year warranty against the RROD for your precious 360, not flaming them.

8.1 - THE TRUTH!
Must be told the 360 has alot of issues= RROD,Disc read error's,disc tray problems,lock-ups and MS is still selling systems new with the XENON MOBO a friend of mine bought one at Gamestop we looked inside the vents it has the 2nd heat sink but not the bigger one and it has the 203 watt power supply the falcon boards have the 175W power supply and its very loud and gets hot real fast. People who have not bought one need to know the truth and then they can make the choice!! Read the report at 8-Bit joystick.com "Inside source Reveal's the truth about XBOX 360 Red Ring of death. I had 2 die one RROD and one Disc error and my son had 1 die RROD.The 360 has alot of great games but the hardware is a major problem and so now I own a PS3 and so does my son that was My choice after my hardware failures and research @349.99 these consoles if taken care of should last 3 to 5 yrs without issues my son still has his PS2 6yrs old no problems, take the time to read this article and then decide for yourself.

8.3 - Yep MS may even be selling refurbs as new.
My friend works for a drop ship company and I get stuff from him cheap sometimes. I bought a sealed 360 that I'm positive was a refurb. There were marks on the back from someone opening it. It had an extra heat sink added when I looked through the vents. It had a new warranty sticker placed over the still sticky area of where the old sticker was. And the warranty sticker also had a black marker dot on it. I think thats how MS lets their technicians know its a refurb. Yet there was no labeling on the console or box that said it was a refurb. I believe thats actually illegal.

@EZCheez

Yeah that 360 would have red-ringed soon. When a 360 freezes with graphic glitches like that the 3 red lights aren't too far behind.

Well, I can't speak for my friends, but I've always babied my consoles. I had to replace one NES, but until I bought a 360, I'd never had so many systems die on me: I'm on my fifth since Oct. 2006.

360 #1 was DOA out of the box (bad HD); exchanged for 360 #2, which red-ringed in mid-February 2007; exchanged for #3, which red-ringed in early July; exchanged for #4, which never red-ringed, but lost controller connections, scratched a disc, locked up, and made a RACKET; exchanged in September for #5, an Elite; so far, so good. It's loud, to be sure, but runs much cooler than my defective Pros. I shudder to think of how much time I would have wasted sending them in if I didn't have a Best Buy replacement plan.

So, the question is, did I do anything to speed their demise? I don't think so, though judge for yourself: I keep my 360s upright, with large amounts of space on either side, plus 18 inches to two feet of space behind it for the exhaust fan. I don't play long, marathon sessions; I usually play for an hour or two before turning it off. My systems have always been plugged into a Monster-brand power center, one designed to minimize spikes and surges and to "clean" the incoming electricity. I keep the area around the system dust-free, and use canned air on the 360's vents from time to time. I have never moved my system while in play, and I keep my discs clean and lint-free.

Like I said, I baby my systems. My PC, too.

Of all my 360-owning friends and acquaintances, I'm the only one who's even been through more than two; many of them are on their launch systems, or have only had to replace theirs once.

Maybe I'm just cursed. :)
