Gears of War 2 Tech Demo Shown with Over 100 Enemies on screen - First Images

According to IGN and Joystiq:

"11:11: A video is showing of Gears of War with hundreds of enemies running down the road to show off new tech. Water and splash effects are shown, again using Gears of War on updated engine.

11:10: "Imagine what Gears of War would look like if we launched it today." CEO comes out to talk about updates on Unreal Engine. Ambient Occlusion technology is one thing they've added. This is good for more realistic shadows."

I think they wanted to be careful of treating the news as a reveal. They were showing off an updated version of the Unreal Engine 3. The headline is kind of misleading. Gears 2 was announced, but I don't think they are treating this as the big reveal. Let's wait and see how things end up. Maybe the reveal won't come for several more months. Its too early to tell. I can't wait for Gears 2 either, but let the developers decide when its ready.

when Cliffy B entered the stage, the trailer showed Marcus flipping the chainsaw bayonette upside down and then hurling it into the skull of a lucust. and then the screen faded with a skull in red with Gears of war 2 engraved through the center. It looked impressive but it was just CGI

I agree. The first game was pretty epic, a great mix of pace, fantastic looking, a good mix of character development & story, good multiplayer, sweet boss battles and a sense of exploration.

Fun all around.

No wonder it was Game of the Year so many places, and has a 9.5 out of 10, or something average review score.

Nothing new here tons of games before have had this, but this is looking like the best and currenlty only reason to turn on my 360 this year =D

Edit - Reasons why its the only one before you ask - I didn't like ninja gaiden sigma that much so NG2 is off my radar, Too Human is getting a 'meh' from alot of sites so again its off my rader and i can't see banjo 3 hitting this year and Fable 1 was poor imo

erm.. this is a tech demo of the unreal engine in its current state for 360. It looks great, but GOW2 was not mentioned and the developer left the stage without announcing it. To claim this demo is 'GOW2' is wrong.

Not true sir! I was paying very close attention and wrote this comment as the kwynote speech was happening. this WAS a rech demo of the unreal engine and gears was not mentioned. It was only at the end of the session that they showed the CG GOW2 trailer and announced it - but that was after this comment had been written!

Even the launch title Kameo had something like 5,000 enemies on-screen at once.

Yes, it was a tech demo but they used Gears assets and it's not hard to put 2 and 2 together that this game is going to be bigger and better than the first one.

Gears with a hundred enemies on screen at once, massive battles and sounds like destructable environments. WOOT! This game just took my #1 most wanted, sorry Killzone 2.

Now gears of war 2 is gonna absolutely rock, can't wait to play it with my freind, but for MS I'm not a bit suprised by there GDC announcements.

Their announcement or bomb for GDC was.........gears of war 2.

You see this is MS' and their userbase style of gaming, one big hyped up game set to dominate the competition.

They rely on one hyped up game and a huge marketing campaign just to outsell the competition and get sales of course.

I'm talking about halo3, mass effect, gears, and gears of war 2 now.

Halo3 and mass effect were released in 2007 while the ps3 had no games to compete against it, yet the ps3 outsold teh xbox360 in 2007.

So I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble(yeah I know I only have one,funny) but according to what has already happened gears of war won't make a dent in the ps3's momentum.

Now resistance 2 confirmed with 2 story modes, 60 player online and 8 player co-op kind of trumps a release date for a game which we know may be great but have no info about it.

Thats just how 360fankids roll. They bank an entire "war" on one or two big games. Claim that they will "kill the PS3".

Yes they bask in the hype of the games scoring high and selling millions again claiming the death of the PS3 and laughing at the PS3's poor attach rate and "no AAA" titles.

Then when the "inferior" console outsells them at the end of the year, they claim shortages. Without realizing that the "shortages" happened in the month AFTER the yearly totals were released.

I say let them gloat about ther "ZOMG KILLER TITLES!!" and post the lists of "AAA" titles, which just also happens to be the ONLY CONFIRMED games to be released in 2008. Its funny.

Dont worry, Gears of War 2 is going to be (not quite as big as Halo mind you), just an incredibly big release.

I imagine they are lining up Banjo Threeie for December release and GeoW2 for November.
