Microsoft's Shane Kim Says The Console War Isn't Over

Kotaku writes, Microsoft Game Studios head Shane Kim was on the receiving end of a barrage of questions from the New York Times' Seth Schiesel today at DICE. He probed the VP on a number of topics ranging from Bungie's decision to go independent to who's winning the console war to Microsoft's potential entry into the portable gaming market

1.1 - Maybe you need to read the article.
No where was Shane quoted as saying "the console war isn't over". He said that the "I think its way to early to declare a winner" which is completely correct. He even goes as far to say that Sony shouldn't be underestimated and that they are a formidable competitor and they are watching them closely.

Never has MS or anyone claimed the 360 has won the console war. Sony does have a lot of catching up to do and I think the expectations set by the fanboys is unrealistic when stating it will catch up this year. But just like Shane said, it would be stupid to ignore the powerhouse that is Sony, they have been the market leader for a long time. Just the fact that the 360 is on a level to threaten the PS3 is a big accomplishment.

Great post. They sure are on a mission today all it takes is a few non praising posts about their fav platform.

The question is what will pay off more: The shock and awe route MSFT is useing or the gradual hype over long periods of time route Sony uses. I don't know what MSFT did to keep Project Offset, Alan Wake devs etc silent Some of those titles are shaping up to be epic and most devs wan't to boast.

It would be intresting to see what the several un-announced titles are and what they have in mind when talking about opening up XBL that they will be showing at GDC(the supposed MGS4 anwser would be great to see too).

Of course is not but someone is gotta loose eventually. Thats just life, some gotta be at the bottom and some ones gotta be at the top. I can't wait for GDC to see what all three companies have under their sleeve.

Two things you people get wrong every time:

1. It don't matter about your attach rate because all that money is offset by the faulty hardware costing billions. MS still has a long way with only 4 profitable quarters out of 28 quarters since the inception of the xbox brand.

2. I believe 360 will eventually get MGS4, but not in GDC. At the earliest is TGS since they're a Japanese company and it's Konami who calls the shots.

Power of Green: Your theorys are wrong and didn't you learn anything from you PRO HD-dvd comments? Look at where HD-DVD is now.

Yah Warner sure did "suprize" many of us. lol

Not going to fight with you theories are one thing but what I'v said comes from MSFT, they said these things not me.

MSFT: said they had several unannounced titles.

Devs: have said they're making these games for the 360.

MSFT: has said they're going to show something new they're working on for XBL this GDC.

Inside sources have said they are working on something that will competing MGS4.

Theories are what the industry and Sony fans are involved in, I'm simply stating what I read from the sources.

You seem angry take a break man.

It's sure not over! And PS3 still thirdplace in ltd sales, if sony fanboys are claiming it, it's dumb. I'm pretty sure Sony will pass over MS, but over? Sony was nocked out early last year, look at it now. What is holding MS from doing the same?

360 hardware shall be around 'till 2011, PS3 shall be the major system from Sony 'till 2013~2014. It's way far from over.

EDIT: LOL, this was @2, my bad with the reply buttom...

That's a given that all companies have unannouced games. And you assume Sony has nothing left in up there sleeves? Just yesterday there was a new Twisted Metal. I wouldn't say im angry it's actually funny how wrong some of your comments are and you repeat yourself everyday. And your bullet points about those things are mere rumors. You just can't say those are going to be true. GDC won't be huge for any of the three companys. Has GDC ever been huge? Answer that question yourself.

We're barely hitting the second round of Wii and PS3 titles, and third round of 360 titles. (hope to god Halo Wars is good; I've got faith in those guys)

I really don't think there is going to be a clear winner this gen unless the Wii continues it's pace. Both the 360 and PS3 will do just fine.

For Sony fans to say the war is over is a little similar to what Xbox politicians were saying prior to the Christmas holidays; that by the end of 2007, Xbox 360 would be in a comfortable position. But things need to get alot better for Sony, because if they do make a come back and win this generation, they'll most likely lose a huge chunk of market share for their mistakes with the launch price.

And that would be good news for Microsoft. As Kim says in the interview, their principle strategy is to launch a year before the competition. If the Xbox 720 impresses, you'll get a heck of alot PS3 owners also buying that console - because hate it or love it, Microsoft have made an impression in 2007 aside from the hardware issues they've had.

Personally, I'm pleased because this will force Sony to step up their game. At the end, we all get the benefits from a growing rivalry.

7.1 - You're right on
no matter what, Sony has lost some of the market to MS this gen. It's one of the reasons I don't see a clear winner. I don't think they will make the same mistake again though. The PS4 should launch a lot closer to the 720 and hopefully at a closer price point.

7.3 - Market share
Its a tad early to be declaring Sony lost a large chunk of market share when X360 lifetime sales are not at Xbox orginal yet, once they pass that then they took some market share from someone. Wii is taking some share from both X360 and PS3 at this point would be a more accurate statement.

In the end I do think Sony lost a little market to X360 but I also feel that X360's failure rate gained Sony some back. There are a LOT of PS2 owners out there that will determine who wins this war IMO. If they stay Sony loyal it will be round 3 to Sony, if they mass defect to X360 (I find highly unlikey but <shrug> that's my opinion only) then M$ will win its first console round. At this point you can't say PS3 lost market share to X360 though (IMO).

IF X720 release a year before PS4 I still don't think you will see a mass defection like you speak of (you said "heck of a lot"), BUT a lot will depend on the date M$ releases X720. If they release it next year not many PS3 fans would defect I don't think, to me it would show M$ will not support their system for long again. If they release it in 4 years or so, some early adopters in the PS3 camp will get the X720, but I still don't feel mass exodus would occur and there is no basis in fact for it currently. In marketing early adopters are great but brand loyalty is a powerful thing (even if its less powerful in today's times), and whether you hate or love Sony, it has strong brand loyalty (as does Microsoft with its fans).

Not dogging you Meus, just debating the point and I love your avatar.

7.4 - Actually
Wii is creating a completely new market that has never bought consoles before. I actually think they are 'losing' market share they had w/ the Gamecube, but are more than making up for it in this super huge casual market goldmine that they found.

Been gone awhile and missed some good news. 100% Meus. Their market share has definitely shrunk from when the PS2 was king and it has forced them to step up their game, which brought us all those good games in the latter half of the year. And while i'm not a fan of the 360 hardware issues, their are simply too many great games to play on that system. That makes it hard to disagree that MS has positioned themselves well for the next iteration of consoles.

What I'd like to know is why was the Photo editing(at least add the Wii pic) so bad and after that why are so many non 360 fans so(more) intrested in 360 when they already know what they're going to say regardless of the nature of the post.

How does 360 related news in general have more fans of the competing console that hate the product always garner more intrest then the fans of the related news?.

9 - Since when
Are 3 good games a year a good gaming year??? MS are in this illusion that they can compete with the ps3 with ONLY 3 games???? They got another thing coming... There at least 10-15 exclusives with 5 being really AAA that are releasing this year a lone for ps3. If i was a 360 gamer I would be really worries unless your satisfied with playing halo3 until gears comes out sometime 2009.

You know as well as I, Microsoft have more than 3 games to combat what Sony has to offer. Ill be a fool to say that PS3 wont make a killing this year. Ill be a bigger fool to say that xbox 360 is out for the count.

" If i was a 360 gamer I would be really worries unless your satisfied with playing halo3 until gears comes out sometime 2009."

Gurl, Why should 360 gamers shake in their boots? 2008 wont be any worst for the 360 than what ps3 went through last year....am I wrong?? If so, why is everyone saying this is the year of the PS3?

I understand that everyone taste in games is different but for me, I only bought Drake, Resistance and 2 blu ray movies...the rest were rentals. While my 360 been get so much love. I have both systems, so no matter how this year plays out Ill enjoy both.

21 - Lifespan of 360
"Kim said not to expect a lifespan for the Xbox 360 on par with its predecessor, pointing to the strategic benefit of launching a year before a pair of current-gen competitors."

That would be earlier than autumn 2010, say they give it a 4-4½ year lifespan perhaps late 2009 ealy 2010. So basicly any 360 bought now has under 2 years life expectancy - in more than one way :-D.

That's quite the new stance from Microsoft on this: http://uk.reuters.com/artic...

So this would launch around the PS3's 3/4th year, against a new PS3 hardware revision, a PS3 with a much reduced pricepoint and selling 15+ million a year. The 720 would have to be massively spec'ed, 100% backward compatible and sport a comparable pricepoint to the PS3 - Deep pockets!

They must've heard Hilary's rant on "Three Red Lights" podcast. ;-D

22 - The Console War Isn't Over?
The sky is blue, water is wet, Joe Quesada is an idiot, the console war is not over. What else do we need to say that is completely obvious? 2008 may be Sony's "year" as EGM says but the 360 is going to continue to do as well as it has been and the Wii is going to continue to dominate. Three strong competitors will make this better.

I find this interesting and disturbing at the same time. My problem with this is how are they going to release the next Xbox in under 2yrs, with new tech and expensive hardware against a much cheaper PS3 who's ball will be rolling in full swing by that time. Lets face it, we are at a standard now where marginally better graphics wont make you buy a 720.

If this is the case i think they should keep support up for the 360 and not drop it like they did the original Xbox, if they don't i think it could spell disaster for MS.

Erm, did you read the article at all?

"Kim said not to expect a lifespan for the Xbox 360 on par with its predecessor, pointing to the strategic benefit of launching a year before a pair of current-gen competitors."

If the 360 will not have a lifespan the same as the original Xbox that would mean the next Xbox would be due late 2009 early 2010, as the 360 has entered her 3rd year, please correct me if im wrong.

Or do you think MS will abandon the whole brand at that point?

Maybe you are the one wearing blinkers and looking the idiot, please re-read the article!

Why would he say something like that about the lifespan? I know when I invest in a console I want to be able to play new games on it for a good number of years before it's replaced. The original Xbox already had a rather short lifespan, and when it was over it was OVER. They just pulled the plug on it after what, a little more than four years? If the lifespan of the 360 is even shorter I think a lot of gamers will be ticked off about it.

The 360 was lucky in that it released in a bit of a vacuum - all three consoles were tapering off, not a lot of competition. If they try to release more hardware in 2009 when the PS3 will probably be really hitting its stride I won't be so eager to get a new system so I can play some new games. I just hope they don't rush another system to market just to get out ahead again.
