2007 - Sony PS3 sells 8.83 million, XBOX 360 sells 7.3 million

Today sony released its Q3 figures showing sales of 4.90 million units worldwide.

The total for 2007 is now 8.83 million units, taken from official Sony numbers

Sony had the advantage of multiple price drops and new SKU's and being the new console on the block. I'll give it that. I'm impressed considering 360 had Halo3 and others.

I'll wait for official numbers from Microsoft before i go congratulating Sony.

4.1 - The number isn't from gamespot its from MS
Gamespot just did the math. MS said they shipped 10.4 million units by the end of 2k6. They said recently they shipped 17.7 units from launch til the end of 2k7. 17.7 - 10.4 = 7.3. Its not that hard kids.

Anyway, is it fair to compare Sony official numbers and Gamespot numbers? Why not official SONY numbers VS official MS numbers? Or why don't get both from *Gamespot? Why don't get both by taking NPD (America) + GfK (Europe) + MediaCreate (Japan)?

I really don't give a crap who sold better, wii crucified both and we are going into a mini-games market... Weeeeee! ¬¬'

Let's assume the figures quoted are, in fact, accurate.
(I love it when companies release Official figures)

The ps3 has been outselling the 360 by 1530000 units this year.That is 29423 units per week.

Now, follow these simple calculations:
17.7 million 360 sold - 10.49 million ps3 sold = 7.21 xbox360 lead.
therefore:
7210000/29423 = 4.71 years

Hence if the ps3 continues to outsell the 360 by 29423 units per week, EVERY week (!) it will take 4.71 years for the ps3 to catch up in sales to the 360. For those of use who are mathematically challenged this will mean that the 360 retains its lead until ...

The above calculations are based on official sales figures by both companies. I ain't telling you anything which isn't already there.

Of course, MSG4, KZ2 and such will have a positive impact on ps3 sales in 2008, that is true. But I don't believe that MS will idly sit by and watch its lead disintegrate... I can feel a big price drop coming.

2008 is going to be a great year in the console debate!

I'm rooting for both consoles to do great Sony and ms doesn't put money in my pocket and this whole competitive game market is only good for us the consumer with price drops and great games to play. It was only a matter of time for Sony to pick up steam but hats off to ms also this console generation Ive had many hours of fun with the 360 and now the ps3 is my primary game unit next to my PC. this last holiday season was awesome to be a gamer.

The only reason vgchartz.com is only undertracking the PS3 by roughly 500k is because the is as much as they can get away with. It use to be much, much worse. Last year they had the 360 numbers some two million high and the PS3 significantly lower than even low estimates for worldwide sales.

Vgchartz is run by a Xbox fan named ioi that has been banned in most forums for spreading crap.

Vgchartz game basically comes down to using the Others category to inflate 360 sales worldwide as much as plausible and undertrack PS3 sales numbers. As more and more people have learned where to get access to reliable European sales figures, vgchartz has been forced, kicking and screaming, to fix their numbers and dramatically raising the PS3 worldwide numbers and bringing down the 360 numbers.

Your not the only one having a hard time believing this. Sony had 3 straight monthes in which they sold less than 100k in N.A., and was brutally outsold by 360 every month this year in the largest gaming region in the world.
The only way that I can see this happening, is if sony flooded the retail sector with over-stock. MS done it in '06, and that's what sony has very likely done this year. What did sony say a few monthes ago, that they projected 15 mil ps3's to be sold by March. And now the same day they release their numbers, they changed their 15mil projection to 9 mil. Sounds to me like they over flooded the retail sector to boost their numbers.
