Burnout Paradise Xbox LIVE requires hard drive

Videogamer reports: "Burnout Paradise has impressed gamers since its release last week, but the Xbox 360 version isn't the same for everyone. Reports from gamers suggested that the game needs a hard drive for online play, meaning owners of Core and Arcade Xbox 360s can't play the game online. Having been totally unaware of this, we hunted down our retail 360 copy of the game to look at what was said on the case. After close inspection we finally saw the text.

"online multiplayer 2-8/hard drive required" read the orange text on the second line of the game information on the rear of the case.

A user on Maxconsole.net contacted EA support and received the following reply via email:

"The hard drive is needed to store temporary data when playing online as the data transferred from one console to another requires storage space greater than what the memory card can contain."

We're waiting for an official response from EA on the matter"

Not a good sign for things to come. Lack of a HDD was always gonna come back and bite M$ in the ass!

How much is the cheapest 360 HDD?

retail, the cheapest HDD is the 20GB which is $99.99... and that's a complete rip off and ends up costing more if you try to buy an XBOX360 Arcade, then a HDD afterwards.

Actually, I see this as a good thing. HDD needs to be required for games. Yes, M$ should have made all consoles HDD equipt. But, I do not have any remorse for those who chose to buy a 360 without a HDD - to me, that is just a stupid move. And if you say you cant afford the HDD models, then how are you going to afford $60 games ? I wish Mass Effect had been HDD required, it probably would have fixed 90% of the glitches that title suffered from due to a lack of usable memory.

Personally, I hope more & more Developers will force M$ to use the HDD.

So why release a console without a HDD in the first place? If anyone is stupid here its MS and not the ppl (they also are for a diff reason) who bought into MS's BS that a HDD is not required.

I don't think anyone has been able to figure out yet why they would have a standard HDD on the Xbox and then drop it for the 360.

5 - 1st OF MANY
this is going to happen with alot of 360 games in the future as online play is so dominant in gaming now.

games that are reviewed even get points taken off for not including online play.

theres going to be alot of twists and turns in the console fight in 2008

Although I own a ps3, the gamer in me is so pissed off with Microsoft right now. I honestly feel sorry for Core/arcade owners who have to buy the harddrive just to play online. This game has seemless online intergration and in my opinion that's so cool. And to think I got miffed because I had to pay five pounds extra for my ps3 copy?
on a side note: how come nobody said anything about the demo, surely the same issues are raised there?

Well - its a one off problem at the moment, but theres little doubt now that having sku's without harddrives is hurting the experience for other users and causes dev issues.

Given that every xbox had a hard drive, it does seem a retrograde step...

Still, whats done is done, and its not going to change, but developers need to ensure that 360 titles do not require a HD.. its a daft situation to have two sets of games, ones for HD equipped and ones that don't need it. It will hurt MS if too many games allow this to happen.

Also keep this in mind, the game was developed on the PS3 as the lead platform. Perhaps since they knew every PS3 had a built-in HDD, they created the engine to rely on a HDD for caching data especially online. Then once they implemented it to the 360 version, they probably couldn't find a way to cut the corner to make the 360 run as well as the PS3 version without the HDD.

Who knows.

All I know is that poor core 360 owner who just spent $65 on paradise won't get to enjoy paradise city online. And then have to drop another $108 for a 20gb HDD just to play online. And that's on top of the XBL account.

Fanboy wars aside, a PS3 owner simply just have to buy the game and be done with it. No $50 subscription, no $108 HDD, just to play a game online.

Take Bioshock for example. It has no multiplayer, yet it was praised for "not needing one." But when it came down to Drake's Fortune or Ratchet & Clank TOD, they deduct points for no online mode.

The corrupt Industry.

If there were any reason and I mean any reason the Ps3 did not allow online play (Case and Point; Drakes') they would take points off the review score. Not once was it mentioned in any review that I looked at, that you had to have a hdd for the xbox360. Now I truly understand where some of the ps3fanboy get that the reviewers are bias. This is a perfect example.

totally agree could you imagine the outrage and lets lynch ps3 comments if this was the otherway round?

why has reviewers not taken this into consideration?
why has reviewers not highlighted this HUGE fact?
and why have reviewers not taken points of the score for this huge fact?

if this was the ps3 it would be highlighted, illuminated, points deducted and promoted everywhere!

Why/How could you even get on live without a harddrive? Most demos are 1GB and the largest memory card is 512mb so doesnt really make sense not to have a harddrive to be on live with new dashboard updates, themes, pics,songs..etc. That is why the Premium/Elite come with a month free of Live and the headset.

why am I not surprised? anyway, this is going to be a new trend in the future where devs need the HDD to cache their games. BTW look at the Super Street Fighter 2 HD game thats comming out, microsoft is not allowing capcom to take advantage of the HDD due to the size limit that microsoft has to the games. not good for microsoft.

So, you're saying Microsoft didn't have the slightest clue about gaming?

It was Microsoft who said a hard drive wouldn't be required, it was optional. The worst part is the damage the Core/Arcade SKUs do to 360 games in general, all the games still have to run on the lowest common denominator it's why the texture loading in Mass Effect is terrible, it's great game that is gimped by a SKU most people don't own.

24.1 - Agree with you
But I'm sure Rockstar have it figured out. Perhaps an option to use the HDD to improve performance if it's available. Anyone who wants to play the exclusive DLC will need a HDD anyway so it may not be a huge deal.

I also wonder how they will be able to fit GTA IV on one DVD or if there will be multiple discs.

I think we will begin to see more and more games that expose the limitations of the 360.
