Did Xbox Live's outage contribute to PSN Boom?

The author tries to draw a parallel between the recent Xbox Live outages and the enormous spike in PSN activity in Europe and the US.

From the article: "It's interesting how closely this turn of events for PSN follows the recent "not outage" with Xbox Live. I wonder how many dual-console owners got sick of getting kicked out of CoD4 and decided to try moving their ethernet cable over to their Blu-ray player."

1 - Sure is an interesting coincidence.
In any event, two HEALTHY online services is good for everyone. A healthy PSN helps XBL users, just as the pressure from XBL's success has spurred innovation and attention to Sony's offering.

Either way... Win... Win... Win... Situation for everyone.

I know someone who bought a PS3 just because he couldn't access xbl. He never even owned a PS2 or PS1. Microsoft is dropping the ball.

Lol...
I can't access xbox live so i'll go buy a ps3..
Could it be that both consoles had a crap load of sales this gen so psn usage is up....Could it be that there is a game drought so that single player campains are being completed and mor epeople are turning to the multiplayer action?

Isn't there 10 million XBL users, gold and sliver? and there is nearly 10 million PS3's sold so you could assume that some these XBL members like me also own a PS3. I didn't go on XBL while it was down for the week or two, too much work tbh.

Xbox LIVE was never down for a week. That is inaccurate. There were intermittent problems, that only some people encountered.

That does not mean "down". "Down" means 0 service, which never happened.

What wageslave said was 100 percent correct and in no way fanboyish.
I had service all throughout the "outage" only thing that acted funny was cod 4.

3.1 - It is what pushed one of my friends to a PS3
I showed him both the 360 and the PS3 before Christmas, and he had decided to get the 360 (most of our co-workers have a 360), but then the issues with live, and other things related with MS and he decided to pick up the PS3 this last weekend. Enjoying it greatly.

What makes XBL is its community features. That's what PSN needs. It's great sending and receiving voice messages whilst playing games online and offline. I miss that.

5.1 - I hear ya there
It wasn't missed so much when I only had 4 or 5 friends with a PS3, now I have over 10 and seeing them sign on while I am in a game and not being able to harrass them. I am looking forward to when Sony releases the next update to include access to the crossbar.

6 - I think it coincides with the Holidays
I think as more people purchase PS3's, more will use PSN. Both consoles sold well, so the membership of each service increased over the Holidays.

There's no conspiracy - crapload of PS3s were sold over the holdays, and many people set up PSN account the same week. Some still haven't, as they are just playing through the single player games right now.

....can only get better for both xbox live and PSN, interesting to see how everyone takes to 'Home' when its released. I think the community aspect, will be greatly improved then on the PS3

10 - The real cost of complacency.
Once you try it, it's hard not to like PSN, especially the Playstation Store where everything has a dollar/euro value instead of an arbitrary point value. It's interesting to see how profitable PSN is, despite the lack of an annual fee.

13.3 - Actually, only Master Accounts are tracked.
Which means Sony is tracking by console, not by sub accounts. Looks like you don't handle positive Playstation news very well. ^_~

The spike in PSN users was due to a spike in PS3 sells. Either way it mean more people are using PSN. One thing the article did not note is that even though there were some issues with XBL it was due to the massive amounts of people with new accounts. So XBL seen a spike in sells too.

14.2 - Think a little harder sinner
If there are 10 million PS3 sold there is a good bet there will be 10 million psn users(cause its free) now if everone has 2 accounts there will be 20 million and so on but the bottom line is you can only count the number of PS3 sold to how many psn users there are

Oh and we can make up another account for free if we want and not have to pay to get online like you do on xbox live

I say again sinner

Think a little bit harder

@Mr PS3- Many people who brought a PS3 do not own very many games at all and some brought it as a blu-ray player. So jsut because it's free does not mean that they have the same PSN user accounts as units sold. Because if you go by that then you start delving into attach rates and why good game like HS, Drakes, etc did not sell more games. Which they should have becuase ther awesome games. I think they are accounting for double accounts, becuase for Xbox live if you have an gold account and then you get a silver account they are two diffrent accounts with two distinct gamertags. I only have on PSN gamertag. Why do people get multiple accounts other than additional family users?

While am sure XBL's outage did contribute in some way to the spike in PSN usage. I would like to remind my fellow N4G readers that the PS3 sold MILLIONS of units over the holidays. I believe that those sales are the main reason for the spike in PSN usage. So while i agree to some extent that yes it did contribute i don't agree with the auther makin it seem like that was the only factor in an attempt to either get hits or cause a flame war. Farther proof of this is in this statment, "moving their ethernet cable over to their Blu-ray player." Now if that doesn't make the authers intensions clear i don't know what does.

My brother has both he only played his ps3 because xbox-live had problems. It isn't the shift that matters it is the ability to retain the people is whats important. Xbox-live had me on day one. Im not going anywhere.

But I think holiday sales and, particularly COD4 online would certainly have contributed to PSN rise in this time frame.
