Top 10 Things Bungie Screwed Up With Halo 3

Halo 3 has sold millions of copies and broken records all over the globe. With all these success Microsoft allowed Bungie to go "Freelancer" by selling Bungie Studios back to its shareholders. Since then they have not seen a single improvement to the reliability of matchmaking or their website.

They have listed 10 issues which Bungie needs to address or have completely screwed up with the production of Halo 3. In no way are they anti-halo or anti-Bungie, they gave Halo 3 a 9.7/10 in their review and are just pointing out the obvious flaws in the Halo 3 game.

I've said this before and I'll say it again - how can a game with so many flaws get such a good score?? Gamesrader were the first to do it (admit they gave it a really high score and then go on to complain about all the things wrong with it) and it's the same here, they said they gave it 9.7 but yet there are at least 10 problems?

Someone please explain this to me cause it makes no sense what so ever.

The good outweighs the bad as everyone who enjoys the game would say. Theres plenty of replay value in Halo 3. Bungie created a solid, fun, and exciting game that people can enjoy for years and years.

If this was on PS3, it would have gotten a 7.5 at the most. True reviewers scored the game that way. Halo failed to be true HD and it shows. My gosh it shows. Oh well, when Bungie announces Halo 4 going multiplatform then you might see what the game can really do.

Bungie has already added a group of servers just for the site and I would like to see you do something like this when theres a regular of over 1.4+ million games played per day.

#9 the voice chat button and how people don't notice they have to use it.

It only takes 2 seconds to see and recognize the amount of people that will be in your playlist room before the game starts this is not a flaw this is a complaint!

#8 You can't make custom maps for playlist and you have to veto every time because you don't like the map. Not to mention there are no big maps on Halo 3 for big team battle.

This is so f%cking retarded. You can't make custom maps for playlist because that would be cheating if you don't like to playlist map someone else might well thats to bad and what about Sandtrap, Valhalla, and Isolation those are some tiny maps huh?

Please. No game is perfect but the execution of multiplayer is excellent. Collision detection is exaggerated to say the least as are the little annoyances mentioned. Some people who loved Halo 2 are going to hate Halo 3. The weapon balance and gameplay seems to be a pseudo Halo 1 and 2. If you liked both of the predecessors you will love the 3rd.

Microsoft spent 10 million dollars buying review scores and a million hype stories all over the Net.

Bungie could have sat around for the last three years surfing porn at work and just included a 1080p goatse image and the game would have gotten 10/10 from the usual Xbot review sites like EGM and 1Up. And it would have sold millions - what the hell else are Xbots going to buy for their 360? You aren't really an Xbot if you don't buy the latest Halo no matter what a complete turd it is.

I don't think Halo 3 is a bad game. As far as games go, it's pretty good. But what I hate is that you fanboys defend it as viciously as your sister's virginity. It's a great game, but it is not amazing. It is not ground breaking, it is not very innovative. and with so many factual flaws that have been listed it still gets almost 10/10 reviews and that is just distusting. The sad but true thing is, if it was instead released on the ps3 with would have got 7/10.

I am so tired of these articles coming out against Halo. I will agree with the article about the team voice and the melees, those are totally fixable. But frame rate issues, site integration and the maps are your biggest gripes. I say WHO CARES!!!! I was having way to much fun (single player, multiplayer and theater mode) that I didn’t even notice.

Ultimately, all likes and dislikes are subjective; not everyone likes, or dislikes, the same things. For my money however, Halo 3 is the best game I have ever played. And my gaming days stretch all the way back to Pong.

Playing Halo 3 Campaign Co-op with three of my friends, on Legendary---with all the SKULLS difficulty settings in effect is second to NOTHING!! No other game approaches its difficulty AND fun! Halo 3 is a game where HARD does not mean frustrating and FUN is never compromized.

Halo 3's multiplayer? I'll be playing this mode for years.

I personally was disappointed in the games ending. Instead of keeping it going why couldn't they finish the fight like they said and let him die. There are other Spartans and also gaps and pre Halo story they could do with the Chief.... Letting a good thing die is good. I bet Kratos will die after the God of War Trilogy is complete(They said they want to explain why there are no more Greek Myths). Or they will be done with it whatever the ending turns out to be. Spin offs like Chains of Olympus are fine though. I hated the ending to Halo 3 with a passion. Milking a golden Cow...

Don't wanna be a douche but this "legendary" ending is majorly ripped from an 80's Japanese Anime called "Gunbuster". Not the same context, a couple of difference but mostly the same thing.

I'd like to say that I played Halo 2 a great deal and found myself disappointed with Halo 3. It's not next-gen, it's just more of the same. So people who liked Halo will still like it and people who hated Halo back then will still hate it because it's the exact same thing. That's just normal.

Just like Transformers or Spider-Man 3, not great movies (in my opinion, crappy at best) but they had a hell lot of success... and the profit that comes with it. That's business guys. Videogaming is becoming more and more like Hollywood!

As someone else who's been playing games since pong, I think its over rated myself.... fun, but it should have been a lot more than it is, and I found the whole story to be very poor for a game with so much backing and so many devotee's, they deserved a better realised tale to wrap the combat up in!

But, lovers or haters, I think we can all agree that the melle code issue is one that needs addressing, and that if you are going to restrict the game to 16 player, it really ought to be lag free.

With the first part. Bungie never said Halo 3 was the last game in the series. Theres plenty of room in the story to introduce new characters and introduce a whole new story ark. And I'm sure that's exactly what Bungie is thinking of doing.

If I go onto matchmaking big team battle, and I pick Quickest option sometimes I get lag sometimes, if I pick best connection then i rare if ever get lag.

Ummm, just the other day, I saw over 1 million on. I was surprised, because I thought the surge had come and gone as well. Now I typically see around 500,000, and OFF PEAK I see 200,000.

Don't get fired up if someone disagrees with you, because your numbers are NOT hard. Unless you are hanging out online 24 hours a day, there is no way possible for your numbers to be HARD.

If there were only about 30,000 people playing and the game was laggy every five seconds, then I'd be pissed. The entire Xbox/Xbot world rests on one single fragile pillar - Halo.

If Halo isn't hyped 24/7/365 days a year on every single forum across the Net and every Xbot reviewer at sites like EGM and 1Up don't hand out 10/10 reviews and trash all other fps on other platforms the entire Xbox world risks crashing down in flames.

One thing that the Halo series has had going for it is its long life. Most shooters tend to fall to the side after a few months or so and a new release. But the Halo games have had lasting power like Counter Strike, and Goldeneye, and the Unreal series. Everyone won't appreciate these games, but a lot of people will. Halo 3 actually has a lot of replay value, and I think that when it comes down to it, that is one of the driving forces behind the high review marks. Sure, its not the newest experience around, but why in the hell would you change a winning formula if its worked so well all these years? Is it the best game ever created? Maybe not, but its extremely fun and millions of people are satisfied. And how can you call a game with that type of appeal overrated? And how can you call something overrated if you don't even know the actual multiplayer player count? Have you played it before?

I feel as though bungie is getting a lot of flack for this when it should not. Yes, the game is open for more action. Here is my point though, you finished the fight! The Halos' didn't fire, you blew up the ARK so no new Halo's will be constructed. The Profits are all DEAD! The Halo are is done, it's finished. It doesn't mean that we need to close the book on a universe that is sure to be so rich in story telling potenial.

The mele is the same. it takes away a certian amount of shield/health. If you dont shoot the person enough your mele wont kill em, but since they were shooting you extra while you were meleing them, their counter mele klls you. I have the same problem sometimes too but that is my fault not the games. Its the same for everyone, the person has to be signifagantly hurt befoe the melee will kill them. Unless you melee them in the back cause that is a one hit kill.

Personally, I think most of the complaints are "nit-picky."

The weapons/map/playlist design is about taste. Even though I liked Halo 2's playlist better, that can and will be changed in the future. As can weapon balance.

The 640p thing isn't really a big deal for an ordinary layperson. However, the reviewers should have picked up on that and adjusted their reviews accordingly. But for the avergae gamer, (the average gamer still doesn't have an HDTV) it is not noticeable.

Frame-rate issues are a big deal although on the relatively few times I play Halo 3 I don't notice that many frame-rate issues.

The melee thing though is a big deal. I have had that happen to me alot. I thought it was lag. If that is true then it is going to rebalance the game away from melee attacks.

So far overall I like Halo 2 multi-player better but these complaints (other than the melee) about Halo 3 are not bad enough break the game.

The melee thing has been annoying me for a while, because I seem to always be on the losing end of the melee battle, even if I'm the first one to strike. My friends and I would really like to see a new Turf map; that was one of the best maps from Halo 2.

But it has it´s flaws, my biggest complaint would be that they changed the wepon strength. I mean if you are used to certain wepon from Halo 2 it´s really annoying if they made them weaker, not double duable or harder to use. They shoul only have added wepons, not changing what worked. I've played this nearly everyday. I've had one game with lag. I have had loads of head shots that have killed people straight off. And I haven't had any framerate issues either. Thats just my experience and I can't speak for anyone else but I'm more than happy.
If you have a 360 and play it, enjoy it.

Even if you are up to a second late on your melee, if you have more health than your opponent does you will be the victor… now this is one thing which DEFINANTLY needs to be fixed. The amount of times I strike my opponent first but die as a result of their delayed melee is unbelievable it happens so often and is extremely frustrating, especially after finding out lag isn’t the factor; it’s the games actual code."

Sure, they have a half decent reason for cutting us 80 pixels, which allows more resources for the lighting renderer, but that isn’t good enough. This is supposed to be a HD Generation Console running 720p native at least, Microsoft’s top AAA title couldn’t even do it.
Okay, we admit 80 pixels isn’t going to make much of a difference when up scaled to 720p by the Xbox 360, but it does create a lot more Jaggies than usual."

I think the new melee system was designed to give people with bad connections a chance. It also forces people to do other things besides shoot, hit, repeat. The melee attack isn't a guarentee anymore. You don't know how much health your opponent has. It's better to save the melee for opponents with their back turned. The system isn't better or worse, just different.

Melee is the main problem i have with the game. In his example hes right to critizize because the actual remaining health at that point shouldnt dertermine a winner when there both so low. The player who intitated the melee first should win, ive gone through this many a time in halo 3 :( Another thing about the weapon system is that the sounds of you weapons register in the game even though the enemy isnt damaged. For example if you have a shotgun vs a grav hammer. In most cases the shotty always wins. But sumtimes i shoot very close range, the sound registers and i die, without the enemy being injured at all. If you werent meant to win, then dont register the sound bungie.

Many millions old, very active online - the game is a success. Should not have gotten 10/10 reviews - but in the long term the reviewers and the magazines is going to take the knock for that as they lost the reputation and influence.

Bottom line - with all the hype, a good enough product - they sold a ton, made their money - many play it and is happy. They did not screw up much.

The 720p issue is a non-issue if the game looks well and performs well. Only for the tech-minded it is an academic issue. Sure there is better games out there - but that is not the point. Any marketer will tell you that you don't need the best product to be the best seller. You just need to market well and have a good enough product. And from the marketers point of view, convincing reviewers to look on the product favorably - anything goes. It is up to the reviewers to keep their integrity - because not the marketer - but the reviewer will loose their reputation and marketability.

Bungie stated that they do two rendering passes at 640p, and of course a lot of people who thought that most games only do one rendering pass got really impressed by this fact.

The problem of course is that the majority of PS3 titles right now are doing 4 rendering passes at 720p~1080p. Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Killzone, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear, Ratchet, Uncharted, Motorstorm, and Resistance are just a few others that rely on multiple rendering passes. The reason of course is for anti-aliasing, 4X MSAA being the standard for next-gen titles.

Halo 3 has a big problem with anti-aliasing since it only does two render passes, i.e. 2x MSAA, which is essentially worthless. Bungie got away with taking advantage of ignorance; most people don't know this stuff, and probably wouldn't bother with it anyway.

Do I think this game deserves the high scores that it got? NO!!!
The only game in the series that deserved such praise was the first Halo. Why? cause it started the trend of trying a bring a killer FPS to a platform that has never seen it, the home console. The first Halo is the only game to have completed that task, Yeah 2 and 3 have built upon the success of the first one and improved upon it, but with the exceptions of a few improvement its more of the same that we saw with the first one. This list should be taken with grain of salt to any fan of the Halo universe, I for one am not one, but this game has in a way propelled developers to try to make something just as big and for that Halo is a great addition to the history of this industry.

As for the list like I said no game is perfect, but I will take cry baby statues with #4. In a world where you win a face to face melee duel cause you hit me first is a farce. Having not played the game but many like it, I hate when I can shoot somebody 10 times but they get close enough to land a melee attack and they win. If it was a sneak attack I can understand, but if we're fighting face to face and I have done more damage to you and I happen to land a melee after you I should still win for the simple fact I have done more to deserve that win. Bungie got it right with that change. I shot you more, your close to death and am not, I land melee, I win, sounds right to me.
Better then I shoot you close to death, you happen to land a lucky melee, you win, that is cheap.

I agree with most of the issues listed, ESPECIALLY #4 (please change it back to Halo 1's style), but I had to laugh at #7:

"The Energy Sword also uses a new combat system, if two players strike at the same time, the weapons will clash doing a minimal amount of damag e to each player. This takes out the skill of this weapon, before the fastest strike kills, now you have time to “block” you don’t need to even lunge."

Since when did the sword take skill? If anything, the new clash system gives it "more skill", if any, because you leave yourself and your opponent without shields and open for scavenger kills. The weapons seem fine to me. Shotgun beats Mauler, Mauler x2 = Shotgun, the AR is nice, the Needler is just right (finally) even though it can be annoying at times. You don't see people fighting over a Needler. In the end, it's still a weapon that's only really affective when 1 on 1. My only gripe is that it still gets past an overshield. The only weapons I hardly see used are the Magnum and SMG. The Magnum is slow and hard to get those 4 headshots on someone, especially when dual wielded, and the SMG is just plain weak compared to the Spikers. And yes, the hit detection on the Sniper Rifle does need to be fixed.

I disagree with #1. MC did finish the fight. The story with the Covenant and the Flood has come to a close. With one swoop, he wiped them out by blowing up the Installation. It's the end of a chapter in the Halo universe. The Legendary ending just leaves it open for a new chapter that doesn't necessarily involve the Covenant or Flood, or even indicate that a sequel is definite (though we all know it's coming).

It's like complaining that I can't pick something up with the gravity gun in HL2, or that I can't take control of dog.

I like the swashbuckling, it makes the games more fair, it gets annoying at times but it teaches you to make sure you can win the melee if you go in for it.

Yes some weapons are cheap, mostly the mauler, but that's something you need to get use to in any game, like the awp in CS. Or railgun.

also, the only time I've ever had any fps problems is whenthere's 8 of use all throwing nades into the same spot and guns litter the ground, same with lag, it's only happened occasionly.

Maybe the online play (I think only DMC had some sort of online out of those 4) adds a lot to the score because it adds literally hundreds of hours to your play time, also making it excellent value for money. Playing Halo3 online is an absolute blast. I absolutely LOVED ICO as a gaming experience but it wasn't perfect and I wouldn't want to play through the same game again and again.

Halo3 is getting a LOT of attention because it's a hugely advertised and anticipated title. If you play any game for long enough you can come up with a list of gripes. The bottom line (as said many times above) is that the good points about this game outweigh the bad - why is that so hard to understand?

Anytime you have more than a 2v2 game (and oftentimes even that small) with people you don't know people feel like they need to go off an be the lone wolf, not caring about the team...then it just comes down to people picking off other people's kills.

Strategy in a 40 player game requires teamwork, which most gamers are inept at. Halo is awesome because if you're good enough, you can be the single player that turns the tide for your team...then if your team is good enough, it's force to be reckoned with.

With 40 players, if you play in a team like you need to, you may never get that moment of glory. The dynamics are just too ambitious for a dev to pin down. Whereas Bungie has honed the balance to the point that the best really do survive, and you won't see any shortage of players making good and creative use of the full arsenal of the game.

My point it doenst matter what you buy for team based gameplay (they all have it) If your going to be a fanboy then be a fanboy, don't do that hiding in the dark and popping your head out to make a "subliminal" PS3 point.

The game have such a hard time to fit on a DVD lol Xbox = old scrap. No games on PS3 have that problem with 50gb blu-Ray.

- Bungie quit MS, we can you really do a HD game on a dvd.
- No multi-language game (cause DVD is full)
- Off-line take 5 minutes to complete, I know a Xboy fan that buy it but dose not have internet and speak french, he spend 60 for nothing, should have rent it.
