Metroid Prime 3 Outsells BioShock - Over 400,000 Copies

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption bests former overall sales leader BioShock in its first week of release, becoming the week's single best-selling software title across all platforms in the United States. With few major Wii releases on the horizon, Corruption's place atop the chart is likely to remain uncontested over the next several weeks as well. Positive buzz from upcoming titles like My Sims and Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Party could bring a reshuffling of chart positions in the near future, however.

Just because the Wii has sold the most doesn't negate the PS3 as the most powerful console. The Wii has sold loads because it's cheap and is seen to the casual audience as a trendy gadget.

By all means the sales don't make the Wii the best console around. because technically it definately isn't, but it makes it look that way. Look past the sales figures and look at what you get for your money, then look back a few years and you'll see that even the N64 can beat the Wii graphically on some games. For example, Crusin' the Wii title of the series looks really bad, I'm not just saying it has bad bits here and there, the N64 and Wii titles look identical which is a sign that the Wii is holding tech back rather than propelling it into this new generation.

I have no problem with the DS, it's great and deserves its top spot.

As for the game outselling Bioshock, does this mean Bioshock is worse than Corruption? No of course not.

It's the showing of a single game for a console compared to a variety from the competitors. Metroid 3 will sell tons for a while and when it gets old the Wii will have a new title to keep the fans happy but there'll be a long wait for a game that hasn't got the familiar Nintendo family characters painted all over it. Show me a good future Wii title that hasn't got the same characters from the past in it then I may consider the Wii being a better console.

Currently the Wii is just offering recycled crap, sorry if that sounds harsh but that's what's been admitted by many dev teams (not in those exact words obviously lol), they have admitted that they can pump out cheap games for the Wii and make easy money even though the titles aren't very good. It's the truth, Nintendo will get very rich and claim to have won the next-gen 'war' even though the offerings are everything other than next gen...

The problem with bioshock was the fact that its a new ip so it has to open ground, while metroid prime is the conclusion of two prior great games. This is the same reason Halo3 and MGS4 are gonna sell faster than an umbrella on a rainy season.

I have both Bioshock and MP3 (yes, I'm a wii60-er, looking to add the PS3 as soon as it hits $400), currently playing through MP3 as I beat Bioshock last week. The controls on MP3 are fun and different (my first FPS for Wii), but I am dissapointed that the game has taken much more of a linear feel as opposed to the more open ended world the series has been known for. Plus, it hurts it -for me- to be trailing the wonderful experience of Bioshock, which I believe really pushed the boundaries of what a videogame can be (i.e. thought-provoking, immersive, and fun).

Regardless, they are both great games that get this gamer's seal of approval. The only question is will they be enough to fill the gap to Halo3 or will I have to breakdown and get a PS3 for some Warhawk mulitplayer mayhem. This is going to be a great fall/winter for gamers.

He is comparing Bioshock's opening week numbers (week ending Aug 26th) and assuming it sold 400k again this week (week ending Sept 2nd). So pea brain sees that Metroid sold more then Bioshock this week so it must have sold over 400k! Too bad the idiot doesn't realize games usually drop to 20-30% of what they sold the first week the following week. It is unlikely that Bioshock even sold 150k copies this week. I'm not saying MP3 didn't sell 400k but there is absolutely no proof at the moment.

For Bioshock to be OVERALL sales leader(not sales leader in the week of so and so, but overall), it's TOTAL sales so far have to be compiled, not week by week sales. Bioshock likely got a huge number of sales on its first week, then they waned (just like you said). For metroid to, in it's first week, best Bioshock , Metroid would have to have sold what Bioshock has so far. Since Bioshock has sold about 400,000 copies, it is only logical to say that Metroid has sold OVER 400,00 copies and no less.

I agree. I really dislike the commercials they're using for the game. Not only was the original August trailer disappointing (in my opinion, at least compared to the first CG trailer they used a long time ago) but now it's a condensed version that doesn't explain anything about the game. No one can see what separates Bioshock from the rest through their TV ads.

The new HDMI-enabled 360s come with harware modifications, along with the extra heatsink. It makes a huge difference, as the heat coming out of these Xboxs is barely enough to warm a flea. In short, hardware issues are less of a concern nowadays, and the 360 has too many good games to pass on if you are loyal to your gaming needs and not to a company.

Metroid's sales are impressive no doubt, but they frickin' should be! This is a huge Nintendo franchise that's been around since the mid-eighties, and Corruption is the first Metroid to see action on Nintendo's game starved Wii. Beating what is technically a new comer, that seems to be selling on good reviews and word of mouth alone is not something to yell about at the top of your lungs. On that note I'm glad to see both titles do well.

It's actually quite simple.

With the ridiculous number of Wii's that are sold, there are so very few great games on it. You have mario, zelda, resident evil and now metroid. People have had the other 3 for a long time now so of course they are going to get metroid. The selection on the wii is pretty small, and the install base is freakin huge. Whereas on the 360, the selection is huge, and the install base is just slightly less than the wii. Average owner for the 360 can't afford to get EVERY good game for it, but that's not the case with wii owners.

Plus marketting for bioshock hasn't been too good. It's mostly word of mouth.

I personally find that I'm playing my 360 a LOT more than my wii. Especially blue dragon right now. Damn I love that game.

I used to be a Nintendo fan, so that's why I find it funny you call me a "fanboy". I like all companies equally, but I don't have to like everything they do. Their consoles are not perfect, but the Wii is the one that is more distant from perfection. No it's not. It's actually a disappointment for people who have been playing the franchise for 20 bloody years, since it's a spawn of the Metroid series. Nintendo is only using the Metroid name to salvage the franchise, and squeeze as much profit as it can do, like any company would. If it was really CORE TO THE BONE, it would have sold better than the last three mortal kombat series, which were disappointments critically speaking! The mortal kombat series have reached millions of sales even in the latest iterations which weren't as memorable. I'm betting the lack of online play turned everyone off, since it was always EXPECTED to have an online mode to begin with.

And just to clarify some points:

I say Metroid should have had online play unlike Bioshock, because it was EXPECTED to have modes that you found on the DS, except optimized for Wii. It turns out they dropped it. System Shock 1 and 2 NEVER had multiplayer options, so it wasn't really expected to have a multiplayer option to begin with. Furthermore, you don't really need complete isolation in Metroid, as you do in Bioshock.

I also say Metroid, since it's supposedly so "CORE" according to sidar, it should have sold more, since its fanbase should be huge. It should sell at least half of what Halo 2 sold on its first weekend, given it's a long running series with a huge install base on a console with not so high game saturation, a lot of momentum, cheaper than its rivals, and of course, a higher target demographic (Teen and up) than Bioshock (Mature and up)

Mario Bros. was the best selling game of all time, when Mario was new. The first Pokemon games are right behind it, so it passes all sequals in any franchise as well. Heck, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl may very well not overshadow Nintendogs.

On the other hand, Halo 2 outsold Goldeneye, and DKC2 beat out the first RE.

New IPs offer something new, while we know what to expect from old ones. The reason new IPs don't sell as well as sequals is because the new IP isn't as good, not because sequals flat out sell better.

So they sold a game to about 4% of everyone who has a Wii in a SINGLE week in a SINGLE country and that's bad? There are actually about 4.4 million Wiis in America, so 400k MP3's sold is about 11% of the people who own a Wii! They sold to 11% of people who might buy it in a week, and its bad?

The most popular game for the PS2 was GTA: San Andres, which sold 14.9 million copies, this to an instal base of 115 million? That's 13% of people bought it, the most popular PS2 game. Working off the American instal base for the Wii, and the America sales for the Wii, MP3 has almost matched that first week.

I don't see the problem when a game sells to 11% of the people who can buy it in one week.

A game with a higher install base will just sell more games. DO you think if anyone could just go out and buy a Wii only 400k games would have been sold the first week? No, more would have, of course, because the numers say for every 10 Wiis out there, there 1 person bought MP3, so far. If there were, say, 1 million more Wii's, there would have been about 100k more games sold. The demand being so high for the Wii, though, should give MP3 longer legs, which is even worse for your arguement.

Bottom line, though, is that reaching 11% of your audiance in a single week isn't bad.

Who's forgetting about the other PS2 games? I could do it with others, but I was being kind enough to take the best selling PS2 game. Others get well below 13% of PS2 owners buying them. Final Fantasy X got only 7%.

MP3 reached a very good number of people in a single week, no matter how you try to cut it. It could break a million in America alone, a mark most games don't get over the world! And, as you said, it's getting these great numbers without a huge install base, yet.

First: Metroid is a 20 year old franchise. Bioshock just came out; it's actually selling very well. Bioshock is not overhyped; ALL reviews say it's good. Not the case with Lair, or even HS. Third, to the Wii fanboys; Metroid= Nintendo, Bioshock is 3rd party (it could release on PS3 or even the Wii). Of course, with Ps2 graphics for the Wii. The first party game you should compare Metroid is to Halo 3. Talk to me in a few weeks, to see who outsells who. Or better yet; go play. This wars are stupid. Its good to see Wii finally get a good game. But not just a good game, a great game. Wii has sold lots of consoles, but for what games to play on?. Only main reason why its sold tons was because parents only buy their kids the cheapest and funnest game console they think their son and or daughter will enjoy the most, typically speaking that is. There are some parents who will buy them any system they want, but like i said, typically, they stick with the cheapest system, usually being nintendo product. But now Metroid is out, we older gamers now have a reason to turn on our Wiis and play something else than WarHawk on our PS3s and BioShock on our 360s.

But one thing ive been thinking, the title states "Metroid Prime 3 Outsells Bioshock - Over 400,000 Copies". Well, Although it is great for the Wii, it is not something to be all happy for in the coming weeks. I mean, Congrats to Metroid on beating the biggest 360 game of the summer, but it wont last long. As you'll agree, come September 25th, that statement will prolly read (this is just estimate so dont flame me) "Halo 3 Outsells both BioShock and Metroid - Over 2 Million Sold On Day 1" . But the thing is no one will really care that much, cause its obvious no game will get this much attention and sell this many, unless it is Halo 3. So im just saying, Congrats to Nintendo and Metroid, but it shouldnt be taken to kindly as in 3 weeks, it will change and then most of the 360 - Wii owners will be saying "Metroid what?". j/k.lol

Where are the number of copies discussed? The chart says that for this week's numbers Metroid Prime outsold Bioshock. That is, Metroid Prime sold more copies in it's first week of release than Bioshock did in it's second. This is obvious and is the same way that movies work all the time... New movie comes out the next weekend and knocks the former #1 movie to #2 for that week.

I love both of these games, but I think this is spreading misinformation until we have better confirmation of the exact numbers (NPD for instance). Also, I think the numbers from the article that this eventually references are just Amazon numbers, which is really just a small drop in the bucket of total sales.

If I had to guess why this is true I would say that while there are more than a few games to choose from right now on the 360 there's basically nothing other than Metroid on the Wii. Also Bioshock is a very M title and Metroid isn't, giving a broader potential audience (tens of thousands of kids who are finally tired of Wii Sports).

YOu're forgetting that most people think Wii is for casual gamers, while MP3 is a hardcore game.

The simple fact that in one week it sold to 11% of Americans with Wiis should show that the Wii is not just a casual system.

I've seen more commercials for Bioshock than for MP3 (I've only seen one for MP3, and about 20 for Bioshock), and I had to remind a few friends that it was out.

First off I play all three consoles. got them when they first came out. So I enjoy games from all three systems. I will say that BS was overhyped and overrated. Because the people that they reviewers said it was a great doesn't mean it was. I choose games base my own opinion. I am sure not all the reviews can be wrong,but they just are opinions. Playing BS was not a horrible experience but I had better with other games. MP3:C is a great and will sell well for the next few weeks. I was actually disappointed when the first prime was announced and they moved away from the third person view. But playing the prime series for myself I enjoyed it.

GoW was awesome and so was GRAW. Halo 3 will outsell everything.. LOL But thats the 360 only truely big seller. Thats their franchise character. Most likely their only true at that. Yea they other games that did well, but I am saying that Halo is the franchise that they always count on to do well. Kinda like mario, metriod, and others for ninty. Metal gear, final fanyasty, and others for sony.

This whole thread is crazy. I own both games and they are great. It's about time the Wii got something new that wasn't a mini-game fest. Bioshock isn't over hyped either. Well I guess 10/10 would be much but it's still a AAA title. I would expect Metroid to sell more because the franchise has been out since NES. Bioshock is the start of a new one and doing very well.

One factor that has been mentioned but not really realized is that not everyone is over 18 and free of parent's restrictions. The rating on a game doesn't just prove what audience it's marketed to, it proves what audience can even buy it (unless you've got those uninformed parents, lucky you). If I was even old enough for my parents to let me TOUCH Bioshock, I might think about it. Still, I prefer the less-gore, more-exploration approach from Metroid. Nothing against Bioshock; I saw the trailers and developer walkthroughs and I hope the concept is expanded and used in more franchises.

Just so you know, as far as MP3 goes, the controls almost make the game. If it was not on the Wii, it might be a bit of a letdown. However, the aiming and interactions that take place give you a level of immersion that is hard to achieve on your standard console. Bioshock, from what I've seen, has done well to also create this immersion through its setting. I'd say they did a very good job.

The storyline of MP3 is also pretty good. The prime series hasn't done the best job of keeping the Metroid feel, which *cough listen up Boots cough* is about being completely alone and without help on an unfamiliar planet. Prime 2 failed horribly in storyline, but Prime 3 tries to pick it back up with more character interaction. I think it's a nice change for Metroid, but I hope they go back to the coined "One girl in all the world" feel after this little Prime excursion.

Gameplay? Prime 3 battles aren't a chore. I have a lot of fun beating the heck out of space pirates now, unlike in the first 2 where I'd let out a huge sigh when they played the music.

Maturity? From what Boots said, I think he's missing a key element in the Prime series in general: Phazon. I mean, it's no where near Adam, of course. Compared to the mutagens used in Bioshock, it's very toned down. Still, it was a market decision to keep it teen. The corrupting effects of Phazon as a mutagen are the namesake of the game, however. Even the supposed wonderful Galactic Federation starts using the declared toxin to enhance weapons and shields, despite warnings of 'Phazon Sickness'. The scenes detailing Samus' own corruption... amazing. One scene actually made me stop and think for a while... it wasn't as much as a spoken moral conflict but sort of a "We become our enemies" type thing. Essentially, the Spiderman principle: with great power comes great responsibility. So don't tell me Metroid has no theme. It's not a flower-and-gold-coin affair that everyone seems to think Nintendo's about. That's one game guys, seriously.

In closing, congrats to everyone. Whatever you bought, you made the right choice: you purchased a high-scoring, immersing game that will not disappoint. I would also encourage you to keep the gamer infighting to a minimum, but that might be too much to ask for.

Totally agree with you. MP3's gameplay, storyline, and the presentation of that storyline has made it an incredible game for me thusfar. FPSs aren't really my thing but given Bioshock's great reviews and supposed nontraditional gameplay elements, I will probably play it eventually.
