Well technically games were going below 720p anyway since games like COD 3/4, Halo 3, etc were already under 720p. I don't know if Microsoft gave an official reason but so far this seems to be a popular theory.

They are journalists (yes, even in videogames press), not publishers PR staff

They have embargos which can be described as a "gentlemans agreement" where you agree not to release anything until a certain date. The most that can happen here is you are blacklisted by the company.

The other is an NDA, if that is broken you could get fired and sued into oblivion.

NDA's are rare, embargos are more common.

The game releases in a couple of weeks...it's not poor video from reputable sources trying to promote the game BUT the idiotic PS3 community that's to blame for this...They will stop at nothing to try to discredit and hurt the sales of this game....It starts at the top, with the pathetic and desperate Sony commercials and end with the sad and lonely PS3 fanboy with nothing good to play....Sony getting there a$$ handed to them this yr...Little PS3 kids feeling left out....

I guess those rascally magazines must have knowingly used some magic compression technology that only blurs anything that isn't on-screen text, and actually goes a step further by scanning each frame to find polygon edges and selectively recalculating color distribution on pixels along those edges.

Wow, I wouldn't be criticizing those magazines, I'd be congratulating them on discovering some amazing new selective compression technology.

Seriously folks ... maybe by the time the game is released they'll be running it at 720P native but there is absolutely no doubt (again, from proven, impartial sources who are trusted by game developers) at the time those videos and screens were made the game was running at 540P.

Seems like some fanboys are really reaching. Remedy state that the game is 720p. It's now bern proven that gamepro and the other gamesite use an unapproved Low quality vid fir hits like the bias sites they are. And Noe fanboys are reaching because the dev didn't say it was native. When have any dev say they're games are native. Or does this new rule only apply to 360 games. Cause I know a couple of Sony games that are sub-HD. And this whole native bs wasn't an issue. Looks at MGS4,SF4

Did you know that Metal Gear Solid 4 runs at 600p? Do the PS3 fanboys care about that? Nope. They say it's one of the greatest games ever made, and are sure to point out that it is a technical achievement.

Have there been other games that run on 360 at 720p? Gears of War? Gears of War 2? Forza 3? I guess, it's not impossible for 360 to run games at a higher resolution, but maybe running Alan Wake at 540p with 4xMSAA means the game will have better effects and less jaggies. And I also hear the 360 has a decent upscaler. So, what's the problem?

yep i know .. i know about the resolution of most game i have ..i don't care about that ... BUT i'm not the one who started it ..i'm not even one of those who enjoyed the thought of alan wake being less than 720p ..

But let's be serious .. it's a technical race ... and so far , when each high profile title fail to be ahead , the ps3 fans laugh .. because not so long ago , it was the 360 fans who were laughing ...

the 360 is not the technical marvel some people believe ... that's something i can't change ...but mind you the last game i finished was final fantasy the cristal bearers on wii ... i'm planing on spending some days playing monster hunter tri..

i don't care about HD when the game is good ...but sometimes you'd expect more from projects that ate millions of dollars to be given birth ..you'd expect something after all this time spent devellopping and the cancel of the PC version ...

The reason mgs4 was semi hd ( they call it like that ) is because 98% of the cutscènes were real time ... That's not the case with alan wake ...

The problem in this case is not that the 360 can't do HD ..(it can) but the fact that some high profile games can't .. alan wake might have a good reason ..for all i know like mgs4.. but i'm not the one who put alan wake in front of the technical race the ps3 games and the 360 games are having ...

last time i checked, max payne most certainly wasn't 720p native on consoles, but that didn'nt stop it from being a badass game. honestly, the videos and screens look phenomenal. if you own 360 and you don't pick up this game cuz of "teh 540p" then you just need to quit gaming. i wish people would just focus on the many, many good points about this game rather than taking one possibly negative aspect and running with it

We'll have to wait and see if it's just more PR using the output resolution as their touted resolution or not.

Not all games on the 360 and PS3 output in 1080p. AW has been in development for around 5 years, since before the 360 had an HDMI cable. It's likely they haven't added 1080p support.

The XBOX 360 upscales anything to 1080P with the scaler chip. My TV tells me the resolution it is in when I push the info button. So your comment is fail. He was talking about upscaling, not running in 1080p native as very few games do that on PS3 or 360.

some of it has been around for a while; ie, most gaming publications highlight the titles/franchises that don't necessarily need to be pimped to high heaven; the Final Fantasies, Halos, Metal Gears, etc, while ignoring, denying coverage of games that could actually USE the exposure; the Beyond Good and Evils, Zack and Wikis, and Demon's Souls; as an aside, Demon's Souls didn't get ANY real coverage/praise until it was released.

while a lot of it is really new to this generation: ie, the blatant console bias going on. read any story about the PS3 during 2006-2007, and the insane level of vitriol, spite, and misinformation being flung about at the console, and taken out on it's games, in particular games like Folklore and Heavenly Sword, genuinely quality games that got ripped to shreds by the gaming media for "issues" that are present in a LOT of games related to their genre.

also, every PS3 title had to individually justify the price of the PS3, but no one ever looked at the software library as a WHOLE; as in, sure, the PS3 is $600, but it has great games like Resistance, Motorstorm, Virtua Fighter 5, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Folklore, Ratchet and Clank Future, Uncharted, and Unreal Tournament 3.

instead, it was ALWAYS, "well, you wouldn't buy a PS3 JUST for Resistance. it doesn't justify spending $600 on a console, but hey, spend $400 on a 360 instead because Gears of War is AWESOME!!"

for the record, i bought a PS3 for ALL of the games i listed above (as well as some games i KNEW were coming, like MGS4, God of War 3, Team Ico's next game, etc), not just for ONE title. i don't think, for ANY console, that a single title justifies it's purchase. i bought an Xbox last generation for Fable, KOTOR I and II, Ninja Gaiden, etc. i got a 360 this generation for Fable 2, Mass Effect, Crackdown, etc.

the gaming media this generation is so focused on hits to their sites, and sensationalism that it's negatively shaped the current gaming culture.

what used to be genuine joy and mirth when discussing video games has turned into jaded cynicism and negativity. maybe it's because the internet exacerbates things, but it seems like EVERYONE is always complaining about SOMETHING this generation. no gamer actually seems to be satisfied with anything.

take Alan Wake for example (since this article is about Remedy). Alan Wake is looking FANTASTIC. i'm excited for it, but instead of people being genuinely excited by a game that is actually looking really, REALLY good, they have to find faults in it. flaws. something to pick it apart. the game has become a console casualty, like Heavenly Sword and Folklore, but the big difference is that most gaming sites favor Xbox 360 exclusives, and most of the nitpicking of Alan Wake is coming from the fanboys, not the gaming media. the same can't be said for Folklore and Heavenly Sword, which were ripped by the media.

who CARES if Alan Wake is 720p or not? all that matters in the end is that it looks nice on my HDTV (it's a 40" set, but i'm pretty sure it will look fine; all my other 360 titles do), and that it's an engaging, entertaining game, which all signs are pointing to that being the case (i watched the first 11 minutes of the game, and it has me intrigued).

this pixel counting, sour grapes having, vitriol spewing of this current gaming culture needs to die a quick and painful death.

Activision may be killing the industry in it's own special way when it comes to exploiting the market with shoddy games, but it's the gaming COMMUNITY that are making the industry not fun to discuss.

i can't even go to a forum and talk about how awesome a game is without it degenerating into a flame war.

i can't criticize a game or developer that the industry holds in high esteem (ie, Valve) because the fans will get all sensitive and start hurling insults.

i MISS talking about gaming with people that actually LIKED video games.

in high school, most of my friends had Super Nintendos while i had the Genesis. they'd tease me for not having an SNES, and being able to play Super Mario World and Chrono Trigger, and i'd rag on them not being able to play Sonic, but it was all in good fun, and we all ended up getting both consoles anyway, and were able to enjoy what both platforms had to offer.

i'm not a fan of Microsoft, but i AM a fan of Bioware, Lionhead, and Remedy, and they are developing games for the 360, so i'll support their 360 efforts.
