Yerli: Uncharted 2 didn't do "justice to the medium of game"

VG247: Crysis 2 writer Richard Morgan may think it was "the perfect example" of interactive storytelling, but Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli thinks Uncharted 2 didn't do "justice to the medium of game".

Speaking with VG247 at the formal reveal of the first-person shooter last week in New York, Yerli says BioWare's Mass Effect 2 did a better job then the Naughty Dog actioner in terms of developing storytelling in games.

Chaostar5117d ago

Not this guy again! How many times are people gonna quote him in articles? Bashing competitor is PR by the book, its not really news.

zoks3105117d ago

So why did Uncharted 2 win so many awards if it did not push the envelope?

With all the professional awards this game have won it's safe to say that it is most likely the best video game ever made;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

and this is evidence that we cannot argue with.

nycredude5117d ago (Edited 5117d ago )

Crysis too better be the best game of the century because These guys are talking a lot of smack about all the great games these days. And what is all this about justice? It's fvcking video games!!!!!! What a douche company.

One more quote of anyone in this company talking shiat about anyone else's game and they lose a buyer here. Fvck them! I have too many games to play as it is.

iFLOWLIKEWATER5117d ago

The only gripes I have about UC2 is that, its a VERY linear experience, even more so than the first. And also, the game wasn't really at all difficult. Besides that, I think Naughty Dog created a master piece, I really "get" what they are trying to do with the medium. This is usually the case, more so than not, with all of Sony's 1st party exclusives. And I think most games on the PS3 are stellar is because of the price of developing for that platform, its expensive. The price of admission is more steep than that of the other platforms, so devs really have to hit it out of the park or don't waste time or resources...

Pennywise5117d ago

This guy needs to go to Lionhead Studios. If he keeps his trash talking up I won't even rent his stupid game.

MasFlowKiller5117d ago

was the comparison to Modern Warfare 2.

Modern Warfare 2 is trash from start to finish, i mean the story was trash, at first the online was trash (not as trashy now) but comparing uncharted 2 to Modern Warfare 2 is really and insult to good games, hell let the guy talk trash about Uncharted 2 just make naughty dog make uncharted 3 a better game, thatz competition.

but comparing it to Modern Warfare 2 is just a low blow

bnaked5117d ago (Edited 5117d ago )

OMG annoying crysis 2 news every day..

wicko5117d ago

Does anyone read anymore? The interviewer brought up Uncharted 2 and asked what he thought.

http://www.vg247.com/2010/0...

iFLOWLIKEWATER5117d ago

You're right...I didn't read the entire interview, just the excerpts that were pulled.

wicko5117d ago

Thank you, I was actually expecting commenter backlash and a million disagrees. Bubbles for you!

Brklynty15117d ago

Without them they would have nothing to prove... Uncharted 2 has collected over 30 GOTY awards, it did justice to something.

wicko5117d ago

Yeah, I disagree that Uncharted 2 didn't do gaming justice.. it blended cinema and gaming so well that half the time you didn't know which was which. Mass Effect 2 character interactions were basically interrogations, not the most realistic conversations ever, and I hope that their goal for the next game is to improve it. I certainly have more complaints about ME2 than Uncharted 2.

StanLee5117d ago

Holy sh*t storm Batman! It seems with every interview these guys at Crytek are encouraging controversy.

Christopher5117d ago

Comparing an RPG/action game to an action game in regards to storytelling? This is just as idiotic of a comparison as most of the game vs game comparisons here on N4G. If an RPG-based game can't do a better job with the storyline than a typical action game... I think that would be a sign of issues.

But, when an action game wins the following awards over Dragon Age: Origins and similar RPGs, it does say how far it progressed the medium in its genre:

- GameTrailers: Best Story
- X-Play: Best Writing
- GamePro: Best Storytelling
- IGN: Overall Best Story
- Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences: Outstanding Achievement in Story - Original
- Writer's Guild of America: Videogame Writing
- National Academy of Video Game Testers and Reviewers Corp. - Writing in a Drama
- International Game Developers Association - Best Writing
- British Academy of Film and Television Arts - Story

Honestly, ME2 is a great RPG, but when a non-RPG game wins so many awards for writing/storytelling... you really have no place to say anything bad about it other than your opinion on whether you liked the story or not. The people who rank and rate your games already spoke out about Uncharted 2, you'll get your turn.

zeeshan5117d ago

And you'd think that the industry PR reps would have learned a thing or two from TURN 10's crap, Activision's Kotick, Micro$oft's Greenburg and heck even Patcher. Don't talk SH*t about games that are loved by millions. Let fans or fanboys or diehard gamers or whatever you wana call them do all that but when you represent a studio, a company, you HAVE to be professional and give credit where it is due.

bnaked5117d ago (Edited 5117d ago )

@zeeshan

That's right! Post of the day..

TROLL EATER5117d ago

if mass effect 2 came out a month earlier it would hav owned 2009

FragGen5117d ago

He has a right to say this because Crysis and Crysis Warhead were brilliant stories worthy of standing beside the finest literature. Oh wait.... No... Nevermind.

Simon_Brezhnev5117d ago

Mass Effect 2 story and storytelling wasn't that great. You be either pick paragon or renegade choices and the story is generic.

morganfell5117d ago (Edited 5117d ago )

...so says the guy with a glorified tech demo. He has some guts to mention story line after Crysis..ho hum.

Cevat Yerli and Denis Dyack...separated at birth.

r0s3b0wl235117d ago

This guy is a retard! Uncharted 2 looks better than Crysis 2 for consoles and all the Crysis games were cheap generic crap!

nveenio5116d ago

Let's just wait and see how Crysis 2 turns out, shall we?

I didn,t know anything about Mass Effect 2, when I back then played Uncarted 2, doh.

Baba19065117d ago

he should talk about his own game not other games..... shut him up.

wicko5117d ago

Learn to read:

http://www.vg247.com/2010/0...

"What to you think of other narrative-based games, such as Uncharted 2? It’s very linear, right?

It’s another style.

It’s delivered in a very linear way.

Cevat Yerli: It’s another style, and I don’t want to talk down that game. It’s really great, and that’s an alternative style, but I don’t think they do justice to the medium of game. I think Mass Effect 2 is doing a better job to the game market, although it’s a completely different style to us, rather than Uncharted 2 or Modern Warfare, for that matter. It’s very [makes motion indicating a row of points]: it works, but that’s not our style."

He didn't bring the game up, the interviewer did.

FragGen5117d ago (Edited 5117d ago )

And then he proceeded to stick his foot right in his mouth. Regardless of who brought the topic up he's the one acting like an ass. So you can stop bringing up the fact that he didn't initiate the topic and also stop acting as if that is somehow a free pass for acting like a moron.

That way we can go back to talking about how idiotic his comments are when he's asked about competitors products.

iFLOWLIKEWATER5117d ago

Frag-gen, you're acting more like a moron than the dev...seriously. All the guy said was that UC2 was linear. And it is...

Christopher5117d ago

The problem with just saying 'it's linear' is that some stories are much better when they're linear. Being linear doesn't degrade the story itself, it just doesn't allow the player to make story-based decisions.

There have been linear storyline and non-linear storyline games since the 80s, so saying that because it's linear it didn't change the medium is the exact same as saying because it wasn't linear it didn't change the medium. They've both existed for a very long time in video games, so nothing done in that regard changes the medium.

Do you know where Mass Effect gets its storytelling process from? Look up Planescape: Torment, it's all right there. A 1999 2D RPG is the basis for their concept, and they've admitted it, so the medium hasn't evolved only survived.

kaveti66165117d ago

Now that's where you're wrong. You said that Uncharted 2's linearity only restricts the player from making story-based decisions. But I own the game, and love it, but I think that the linearity of the game was also very suffocating because it forced me to always make the same decisions with how I approached a group of enemies. And the fact of the matter is that with all of the beautifully rendered environments of Uncharted 2, all I could do was travel in a very straight and pre-directed path towards another area where another cutscene would play out, further fleshing out the story, and then I would just go off again in another straight path, taking down enemies.

In that respect, Uncharted 2 was a lot like most FPS games.

Cevat Yerli, or whatever his name is, was asked how he felt about Uncharted 2, and he answered very politely. He said it was a great game BUT HE didn't think that it advanced the medium.

So what's the problem with him having his own opinion about a game?

Knights of the Old Republic won over 40 GOTY awards but nobody ever said that it redefined the RPG genre.

Yet now the PS3 fanboys are using Uncharted 2's many awards as evidence that it defined the medium. It was an excellent game, but I agree with the Crytek guy.

Christopher5117d ago (Edited 5117d ago )

Nowhere have I said U2 defined or advanced the medium. My issue is with the method in which people approach the logic of the topic at hand.

You bringing up linearity in gameplay (point A to point B) has nothing to do with the linearity of the story, which is the topic at hand. Linear level designs, which ME2 also had in every single level, do not mean that the story itself is also linear in all respects.

ArcFatalix5117d ago

Even uncharted 2 was wonderfully told through ingame cutsenes.

Kratos Spartan5117d ago

I'm no longer interested in Crysis 2. You're not getting my money Yerli. You've lost my respect. You're being ridiculous.

wicko5117d ago (Edited 5117d ago )

Try reading the interview. The interviewer brought up Uncharted 2 and he gave his opinion, nothing wrong with that.

Kratos Spartan5117d ago

I don't need you to come in here like you know something I don't. My comment was more of a generalization of everything this guy has been saying the past few days about all the big games. He can have his opinion, but I've lost respect for it. For the fact the way he gives it.

wicko5117d ago (Edited 5117d ago )

Umm, it hasn't been Yerli that's been saying anything, it was the writer Richard Morgan. Clearly you haven't read the other articles.

shadow27975117d ago

He said Uncharted 2 doesn't do "justice to the medium of games". How is there nothing wrong with that?

It doesn't really matter who brought it up, he still said what he said.

Personally, I prefer Uncharted's storytelling over the boring, stale conversations in Mass Effect.

wicko5117d ago

I don't agree with him either but I still think he's entitled to his opinion. He didn't just rip on the game, he just doesn't like it nearly as much as everyone else.

chaostheory5117d ago

Actually what he meant is that he did not believe linear games do justice to the medium. While I disagree everyone is taking what he said way out of context (he also said Uncharted 2 was a great game right before it).

Currently playing Drakes Fortune on crushing, next will be to replay Among Thieves, but I'm sure it still holds up today.

P_Bomb1445d ago (Edited 1445d ago )

Recently re-platinumed 1-3. Uncharted 2 aged better than I even expected. I enjoyed it more now than I did a decade ago. It’s more polished than 1, tighter than 3 and Yemen in 3 was gorgeous. Shambhala out-prettied Ubar though. 60fps w higher res’ made for a damn good rerun.

Abnor_Mal1445d ago

Question: When you say Uncharted2 aged better than expected, are you talking about the original PS3 game or the remastered collection on PS4. I ask because I think that a remastered version of the game would look and play better than the original.

I doubt that the original ran at 60 frames, how many years old is the remastered collection anyway.

I need to replay the original trilogy along with the collection, not a fan of the collection trophy of beating levels in a set time and don't think the originals required that for platinum.

P_Bomb1444d ago (Edited 1444d ago )

@abnor_mal
It’s true that the remasters have upped the resolution and given it 60fps, but the base game is the same. The art design and base textures/physics/ animations are the same yet still look contemporary. More-so than UC1 which isn’t as tight, or UC3 in some cases which I found a bit clunky in close quarters.

UC2 level design was a great evolution in bringing the verticality from the jungle into rural/urban settings while maintaining smooth animation transitions. Drake still moves better than the ginger in Star Wars Jedi. Outdoor areas are better lit.

UC2 also has more action and better pacing imo, which helps when replaying a game 10 years later. Kept me engaged.

You don’t need to time trial for platinum. They stuck the speedrun trophies in a seperate extended dlc category so have no fear.

MadLad1446d ago

I thought the originals were good, but not great. I understand that puts me in the minority here. That said, Uncharted 4 was freaking fantastic.

Profchaos1445d ago (Edited 1445d ago )

Yeah I understand the hate for 4 prior to playing it I was firmly against it and felt like 3 wrapped things up already but now after playing it I think it was the best in the franchise.

Now I look back at two and I feel like I'm playing an on the rails shooter everything is so tightly scripted including the infamous train scene you simply can't make a mistake

Rimeskeem1446d ago

I think Uncharted 2 is a lot like AC2. Both games took the idea and basically improved it in every single way.

Movefasta19931445d ago

Uc2, AC2,Halo2, Soul calibur 2, Killzone 2, Infamous 2 , Dishonored 2 and a few more. The only negative thing I have against uc2, and imo it annoyed me,are the blue apes, uncharted 1 handled the super natural far better.
