Do Gears And Halo Still Matter?

While the last entries in both series managed to move decent numbers, it does seem as though both critical and general interest is waning. ODST and Gears 2 seemed to have a good start out the gate, but within a week or two, they quickly faded from view as other titles took the spotlight.

Halo Wars was known as an RTS since day one..only the internet haters pretend that no one knew. That's like saying people got burned from Heavy Rain because they had no idea it was going to be a QTE game.

With that said it still sold 1.7 million copies..destroying any numbers for any console RTS..and it turned out to be one of the best experiences for Halo fans ever..in fact it had the best cutscenes in Halo history

Don't even speak on Gear of War..both games sold 5 & 6 million..more than ANY PS3 exclusive ever..so does that no PS3 game matters?

Halo 3: ODST which I was the only one to predict last year..outsold every single exclusive on both systems in 2009...

So does that mean that Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 don't matter?

Look we get all the hate for both of these games..because they are incredibly successful games that have not been matched by the PS3 thus far in term of popularity..

But why do blog site after blog site try to suck up to 360 hater world and write articles like this..

Halo Reach will have thousands upon thousands of fans at Midnight launches waiting in anticipation for the video game equivalant of Avatar..The game will break all kinds of sales records..and we will be glad to reference THIS article and the comments that follow.

Gears of War 3 whether it is released in the 4th quarter or the 1st quarter of 2011 will DESTROY anything in it's path when it drops..breaking it's own record set during the sequel..

Halo has been one of the biggest games when talking about multiplayer.
Check it out. Halo has been the most played game on XBL for 07/08/09, and after 2+ years of release, it still pawns any PS3 exclusive, period. Just check out all the MLG PRO tournaments they have every year! Thats taking Halo 3 to another level!

Gears of War 2 might have some lag issues, but it doenst prevent it from being a top notch game. Matter Fact it still manages to remain among the top ten most played games on XBL.

Currently Halo 3 is the #2 most played game on XBL, and thats because MW2 bearly came out, but just wait untill Reach comes out, and its going to murder anything on its way!

I wouldnt be surprised if the Halo Reach Beta itself took out MW2 from the number one spot!

pardon me for saying this, but people who own a 360 will buy just about any game that comes out on their 360 (I own a 360, but I don't buy into that). Best example, Halo: ODST......
While the PS3 doesn't have as a robust on-line exp. as XBL, Sony sure as hell have tons of 1st party exclusives that just pretty much slaps the MS camp silly......
Listen, generally speaking, if you want to just play online with your buddies with mindless killings, than the 360 is for you.
If you want new original ip's that pushes the boundaries, than the PS3 is for you.
If you want to play with your kids, than the Wii is for you.

Exactly but it's impressive for an expansion Halo ODST to sell 5 million or so when it got a lot of hate for its price yet still managed to sell well. As for Halo Wars it sold Im sure its around 2 million now for an RTS which is not a popular genre in consoles so that is still impressive. So for an expansion and a spin off to sell that well is impressive.

As for gears 2 its on its way to sell 6 million I hardly call that fading away it's selling faster than gears 1 did and that has sold over 6 million so yes they still matter.

300 000 might not seem like a lot to you, but there is no other game in console history that has managed to maintain such a large player-base.

like the guy above me, last time i logged on to Uncharted 2 there were less than 5000 players online. theres even less playing Killzone 2. Halo 3 came out in 2007 yet it has more people play it online in a single day than the amount of people that play probably every PS3 exclusive added together in a month.

also of note is that according to the official stats on Killzone 2s website, not even 2 million people have played it online to date (1 983 431 players on the leaderboards, with OVER 210 000 of those people not even recording a single point score-wise, which means they didnt even get a kill, with most of those only showing they only played a match or 2).

in fact, quickly scanning over the full leaderboards, its not until you get down to about the 500 000 mark that (working from last til first) that you even start seeing people regularly playing 50+ matches.

I feel like a 12 year old when playing games like killzone and gears, mainly because the dialog revolves around vulgar dialog and poorly scripted stories.

Halo is one of the few mature feeling games out there because it doesn't attempt to be overly bloody, overly violent and overly vulgar.

And people stick to good games, children if anything are likely to move on faster, hence why they develop more fads in a given time that a similar adult population.

Certain games always sell. But it doesn't mean people care about them. Some people (most) are sheep when it comes to certain franchises. Take Final Fantasy for instance. I planned to buy the game as soon as it was announced. I bought the game as soon as it was released. There are millions of others just like me. But that doesn't mean the game matters. People were downplaying it from the jump. It didn't matter as it once did in the eyes of many. But we still bought it. Look at how many people still play MW2. Even though it is unbalanced, full of cheats/hacks/glitches, and as unrealistic a shooter as there is, people buy the hell out of it and play the hell out of it. Halo is no where near as cool as it was to people that aren't in love with it. But that won't stop millions from buying it and loving it.

the thing is that Halo was NOT run of the mill at its time of release - it was a breath of fresh air. no other shooter, especially on consoles, had done what halo did.

halo 3. Number 2 on most online players. Gears 2. Number 9. Halo ODST Number 16. How do they not matter when people still play them? If I put in my copy of killzone 2 will there be more players than ODST? If not does that mean that Killzone 2 doesn't matter?
