Guardian: Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Review

Guardian writes: "The Bad Company sub-franchise represents DICE's attempt to add a credible single-player experience to a primarily online series of games, and the second instalment arrives, with impeccable timing, just as we've extracted every last ounce of enjoyment from Modern Warfare 2. Creditably, the only area in which Bad Company 2 demonstrably loses out to its much-hyped rival is visual polish – although it is still a mighty fine looking game, with particularly impressive particle effects allowing realistic desert dust-storms and the like. And it has two elements which Modern Warfare 2 lacks: destructible scenery, and a great stock of military vehicles into which you can jump and cause instant mayhem."

For the love of......Is no one gonna bother doing an in-depth review on the multiplayer? This is a multiplayer-oriented game. So, they just do the singleplayer and say, "Oh, too short. Let's give it 8/10."

And how the hell does BC2 'loses out' to MW2 in terms of graphics? The only thing MW2 have for it's visuals is the high-detailed gun models and overly-glossed characters. Environmental details look like crap.

-Alpha5172d ago (Edited 5172d ago )

Always. People will look at the surface and judge the game from their in terms of Multiplayer. Nobody bothers to actually see how the mechanics works, and it's really annoying. yeah, SP is short, but it seems like reviews focus on that as if that's the main feature with BC2.

In all honesty, I don't mind a 4/5, it's just that MW2 is a crappy MP game that, because the MP was reviewed at surface, ended up getting high praises. The same thing is happening with BC2 but the difference is that the story apparently doesn't hold up to MW2's set pieces.

Let's also be fair and realize that BC2's SP may very well be lame. It looks very meh, and in all honesty I don't care because MP is all I care about. Unfortunately, like I said, MP isn't ever reviewed in-depth-- EVEN IF that review gives MP a 5/5 or whatever score. I always find the reviews of MP games to be totally generic: "The ranking is rewarding, the classes are balanced, the maps are big". I swear to you that no review I have seen goes in depth with MP.

That is why I personally, when I write up a review for BC2, will make sure that the MP gets reviewed separately. Hell, I'll even do a follow up review because I think MP games should get that too.

socomnick5171d ago

It's the jaggies bro, the jaggies and bad gun models probably led to the graphics getting a lower score.

Hell Bf 1943 looks nicer to me than BC2 jaggies aren't that noticeable in that game.

evrfighter5171d ago

Battlefield series has always been multiplayer oriented. It's like doing a singleplayer review of Left 4 Dead...

Aphe5171d ago

Let's remember this is a review from The Guardian, they're never exactly in-depth when reviewing any game.

bjornbear5171d ago (Edited 5171d ago )

its almost as if the SP caused the "inexperienced" reviewers to loose focus on what REALLY matters on the game :

MP....oh well, i know how much I need this game (I need a FPS MP challange beyond KZ2 =(

...something solid and different to switch between)

@ alpha - preach on brotha!

I totally agree, MW2 MP was so shallowly dealt with, just being said " a solid addictive multiplayer"...

SO? Fat Princess has a soid addictive multiplayer but it is NOT deep...

We all know IF MW2's MP was looked at more deeply and longer (say like MAG) it would be SO brought down due to glitches and problems the reviewers DID NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WHEN SUPERFICIALLY REVIEWING

anyway, Hello Dexter Morgan...=D!! FTW can't wait fr new season!

@ socomnick

one factor is yeah, i understand you don't like BC2, you prefer MW2.

but you sound like one of my m8's, that rejects BC2 JUST BECAUSE he's better at MW2, and he can't STAND having to relearn new skills,

so he rather stick to MW2 because of his ability in the game, and is SCARED of having to learn new skills and not being the best in BC2

trust me, he loves the MP, and you would to if you saw it ingame (which i doubt you have) but he's scared...scared of leaving the comfort zone of a pampered simplified game into a REAL strategic far more expansive MP

these people I call "MW2 noobs"

but enjoy living in tht world =) you are just another head i won't be blowing off on march 9th onwards

goflyakite5171d ago

Gonna pick this up after I get ready!!

Excellent post Alpha-Male. Personally, the SP could be lame for all we know, but I pre-ordered BC2 based off the multiplayer, so thats what I'm worried about. I'll only be surprised if Gamestop doesn't give it a 9 or over. GS IMO knows games. I find it hard to believe that Gamespot would think that Modern Warfare 2 is better overall than Bad Company 2.

"Creditably, the only area in which Bad Company 2 demonstrably loses out to its much-hyped rival is visual polish"

"Compared to Modern Warfare 2, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has skulked into the fray well below the radar, but committed fans of military first-person shooters will find it in no way inferior gameplay-wise. If you see yourself as a true, hardcore gamer, you'll be needing a copy."

So really, the only con the reviewer mentions is GRAPHICS and everything else is fine. He doesn't realize that a game in which you can destroy 97% of ur environment can't have Modern Warfare 2's superior looking gun models.

TrailerParkSupervisr5171d ago

MP never gets a good disection. Even in the Rainbow days when I brought home R6BA, R6V and R6V2 I immediately went to MP and dealt with the SP at a later time (when my network was down)

Actualy, I don't think I ever even played Rainbow 6 Vegas 2's story mode....

GamerPS3605171d ago

I am not sure but GamePro gave this game 10/10. Whatever the case, I bought 2 copies for PC and PS3. I just love battlefield game :)

divideby05171d ago

most I am rating the game is low 8s based upon spending a lot of time with the PS3 beta, 360 demo and the PS3 demo..game is really meh to me...I have to wait till fall for a shooter....MAG and this game just didnt get it done for me

LordoftheCritics66d ago

Spec Ops: The Line was super dark.

Incredible story.

SheenuTheLegend65d ago

all the games in the above list are bang on. this is the only reason we need backwards compatibility and physical presense of games for the upcoming future, no matter what.

Yi-Long66d ago

Honorable mention to the excellent Driveclub, one of the best racing games of all-time and one of my favourite games ever.

melons66d ago

yes! incredible rain effects; so good to drive along in rain with your Spotify playlist blaring

Skuletor66d ago

I really wanted a MotorStorm using the same engine, Driveclub is easily one of the best looking games on PS4 and I'm surprised they didn't even give it a PS4 Pro patch.

ravens5265d ago

Yes indeed. May just install it on my PS5. You know, physical copy and all.

monkey60265d ago

I adored Driveclub and the Bike expansion. I also loved Motorstorm. Evolution shutting down was a crime

Outrun Online Arcade, Sega Rally Online Arcade, After Burner Climax... all good stuff. I keep my 360 hooked up to play these as well as the TMNT games that were also delisted.

Skuletor66d ago

I have quite a few of these. Timed licenses suck.

Terry_B65d ago (Edited 65d ago )

wow...I have all of them except the Nintendo ones either in physical or digital version.

Also..Deadpool the Game is missing on that list.

I had no idea that Bad Company 2 was still running, and only now that I know, I want to jump on! 😥

SonyStyled140d ago

I was able to find games in the Vietnam dlc on ps3 the last week. There were articles on here about the server closure when it was announced in April

DaReapa140d ago

BF1943 is the only online MP game that I was genuinely interested in. Been playing since launch 14 years ago. Hate that I couldn't put in as much time to play as I'd hoped for during the final week.

Inverno139d ago

I got really into 43 when I bought Bf3, and preferred it. Everything that I disliked or found annoying about Bf3, wasn't an issue in 43. Too bad they never bothered releasing it on PS4 or PC.

1nsomniac139d ago (Edited 139d ago )

Dead Space 2...... I wasn't even aware that had multiplayer. Nevermind that it was apparently one of their best multiplayers!

anast139d ago

Once people stop buying micros, these companies close the doors.

Xenial139d ago

Dead Space 2 multiplayer had been hanging on for years - I'd boot my PS3 up to see some familiar names in lobbies. This will definitely be missed!

Battlefield Legacy - Sunsetting Announcement

EA: "As we close in on 15 years since the release of Battlefield 1943, and Bad Company™ 1 & 2, we are announcing that their journey is coming to an end."

darthv72404d ago

This reminds me... I have ME on my PS3 hdd. Never really played it, but it was free.

XiNatsuDragnel404d ago

Digital future ppl is good they say nope imo

Eidolon403d ago

And it still says nothing about being able to downloaded even when it's off the storefront, that's a huge ouchie for some who somehow still have it in their backlog...

Shane Kim403d ago

Dont make it an issue when it's not. If you haven't played it in 15 years, chances are you'll never play it.

isarai404d ago

That all digital future sure looks great!

zidane1341404d ago (Edited 404d ago )

Online game servers shut off eventually all the time. Doesn’t matter if you have the disc or not. Even if you have the disc, it’ll be just paperweight unless the game lets you connect directly to a friend or LAN play.

isarai404d ago (Edited 404d ago )

Read the article bro. They are delisting the games, including mirrors edge which is an offline game. Online servers i can understand, not being able to buy/download the games anymore? Completely separate issue, especially seeing as how some these games had lengthy sp campaigns and not just mp.

zidane1341404d ago

@israrai, you can still buy the disc for less then 10$. Hardly a loss.

TheEnigma313403d ago

You shouldn't have to buy the disc, that's the issue.

OhReginald403d ago (Edited 403d ago )

Some brilliant minds created servers to keep these old online games alive. A lot of ps2 and ps3 games that had there servers shut down a long time ago have been restored by fans to keep it going. Warhawk, killzone 2, socom 2/ confrontation, resident evil outbreak series, etc.

DankSinatra403d ago

The disc still exist. I don’t understand the issue. You guys are upset about that “all digital future” yet these games are not “digital only”. Hell digital only is a minority in the gaming world and so far we haven’t moved into it, the only digital only games are games as a service or online only games, which end up failing in the end.

This is no different than a store that stops selling old games, just go and buy a copy somewhere else. So which is it, you hate all digital or you like it? Make up your mind.

isarai403d ago

Talk about missing the point entirely. I'm not going to sit here and explain it to you, figure it out.

DankSinatra403d ago

Talk about whining about something and not wanting to explain from an off handed sarcastic original comment.

I got the point just fine. You’re literally complaining about something that has an easy alternative to it.

ManMarmalade403d ago

I don't think you got the point

DankSinatra403d ago (Edited 403d ago )

@ManMarmalade

No I got it, it has to do with the push towards a future of all digital and reprocussions of losing games. Something I already stayed that hasn’t happened nor is it large enough right now to cause any issues as the games that are all digital are online only to begin with or make up the minority of games

So I’ll say it again, the disc still exists for these games that are over a decade old and can still be played easily. You guys are contradicting the whole “we don’t want a digital only future” crying when the dude I originally responded to stated:

“Read the article bro. They are delisting the games, including mirrors edge which is an offline game. Online servers i can understand, not being able to buy/download the games anymore? Completely separate issue, especially seeing as how some these games had lengthy sp campaigns and not just mp.“

So again, which is it? Do you hate all digital or do you want it?

Inverno404d ago

On PC I don't think it's much of a problem but I'm sad to see BF43 being shut down. I haven't played it in a while since it's stuck on PS3, but i preferred it way more over BF3. It was the lack of invisible barriers which made it better for me.

badz149403d ago

BFBC2 was still the best overall package offered by the franchise so far IMO

porkChop403d ago

Absolutely. BC2 was such a great game. It's a shame we never got BC3.

P_Bomb403d ago

I had a great run on Bad Company 2. Pound for pound, as solid a BF package as there’s been.

InUrFoxHole404d ago

Does anyone play the last BF anymore? I searched crossplay servers and it was 20 people the most on all the servers? Can never find a game

SonyStyled403d ago

The last BC you mean? I was still able to find 10v10 on ps3 2 years ago on NA servers during the evenings. I have all the free and paid dlc installed, but there want any matches in the Vietnam dlc.
