When good game consoles go bad

Sony's PlayStation Network is on the fritz. Microsoft's Xbox Live network has had its problems. And there was that one Wii system software update that was turning consoles into pretty looking paperweights.

It's that time when we dissect failures in digital entertainment technology when we have to ask the question: Is it too soon to blame digital rights management?

Two console generations ago, problems like this would have been inconceivable, or at least wouldn't have had the kind of domino effect they do today. The current PlayStation bug (which is believed to be due to the inclusion of trophies in firmware v2.40) affected games, rented movies, and access to both Netflix streaming and the company's online storefront--all things that continue to work without issue for users of the newer PS3 Slim hardware. You'd simply never get this kind of problem back when the only thing you could use your system for was to play something off a disc or a cartridge.

Honestly, HOW MANY ARTICLES DO WE NEED ABOUT PSN NETWORK BEING DOWN? We get it! When XBL is down there's 2 articles and it's done. PSN is down one day and everyone acts as if "PS3 is teh doomed".

-Alpha5172d ago

It's talking about how gaming is "owned" today by the companies, it's not necessarily trying to drive the Sony issue to the ground.

Fishy Fingers5172d ago

PSN is down? Wow, must of missed that, busy reading all the gaming news I guess ;)

Nineball21125172d ago

@ Red2Tango... get the sand out of your you-know-what.

My god, you ppl throw all kinds of tantrums around here.

It's an article talking about all 3 systems and some of the problems they've had.

*smh*

Trying to be sensible and level-headed around here is damn near impossible...

The games themselves are the best they've probably been this generation, but the gamers (at least on websites) have got to be the worst they've ever been.

ReBurn5171d ago

Two articles and done? Are you serious? You mean an article every two minutes, right?

Maybe now that the PS3 has had a goof maybe we can put these silly hardware arguments to rest and play some games.

ChickeyCantor5171d ago

"When XBL is down there's 2 articles and it's done. "

Going by your reaction, you like so many other just wanna "read" or "see" what you want to read or see.

Both sides get flamed hard. And all of you can pretend like some victim since you are so far up MS or Sony's @ss, its not true at all that one side is getting flamed more than the other.

Not some attempt at sabotage or spreading false info either, nor does it really dwell on Sony's current issue.

Seraphemz5172d ago

enough is enough though... whether good or bad..

all i want now is the one telling me that its fixed.

Godmars2905171d ago

Except its a non-issue now.

ReBurn5171d ago

Unless it is specifically fixed it isn't right to say it's a non-issue. Because as things stand now this can happen again on 3/1/2014. I want to know that with the next firmware update there's no chance of this happening again.

Szarky5171d ago

Hahaha guys imagine all the fanboys crying if the internet was as big as it is now back when you had to blow into your Nintendo cartridges to get the game to work!

"OMG Nintendo makes you give blowjobs for your games to work"

rakunado5171d ago

bubbles for you sir.

Do you know how many times i had to blow into my Zelda 2 gold cartridge to actually run the thing! Gaaaah

Zelda Replay: Majora's Mask

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "Is Ocarina of Time as legendary as I remembered it? For the most part, yes. In spite of a handful of missteps — a few obtuse puzzles, some tedious backtracking, and a clunky stealth sequence — I don't believe the last 23 years have been unkind to it. Ocarina remains a brilliant example of the medium, a landmark game that shaped the future of its own franchise and 3D gaming in general. After more than two decades it retains its inventive dungeon design, challenging puzzles, dynamic combat, wistful storyline, unforgettable music, and empowering open-air freedom. I feel confident calling it one of the greatest games of the fifth generation, even if I'm no longer prepared to list it among the five best games ever made."

Pure unadulterated fun. They don't make them like this anymore...especially not the triple A industry.

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell Of Ar Ciel Retro Review – Love Conquers All

Gary Green said: You’ll be forgiven if you haven’t heard of the Ar Tonelico trilogy. The previous two games arrived so late in the PS2’s life-cycle that they simply went unnoticed. While most were tinkering with their shiny new PS3s, Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia and Ar Tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica were being ‘returned to sender’ by your local Game stores. Luckily, you won’t need to have played them to understand and appreciate this third and final chapter, Qoga (pronounced k-yoga) tells the story of a racial war between humans and Reyvateils, a breed of biologically produced female cyborgs capable of reproduction, while still having a digital mind.

Oh my god. I kinda wish this would get a remaster on PS5, it would be awesome. One of my favorite games on PS3.

That and 3D Dot Game Heroes. It's a shame that some stuff is stuck on PS3.

Knightofelemia1d 16h ago

Ar Tonelico 3 is good I still prefer the first AT game. The music is solid in all the games and Akiko Shikata is a very talented singer bringing life to the game. Only annoying part is well I find is Saki I always choose Finnel or Tyria. KOEI so needs to HD remaster the franchise along with Ar Nosurge and Ciel Nosurge since it never came to North America. I would day one the Ar Toneliceo games and Ar Nosurge if they were remastered.

TheColbertinator1d 15h ago

I still have the limited edition of Qoga unopened. Unfortunately it never went up in value like I had hoped all these years.

Used to own all these quirky JRPG on ps3 good times. Wish I would have kept them all

Pacific Rim Pinball comes to Pinball FX

This could be fun as they make great tables. Go big or go extinct. Prime your senses for a neural handshake and step into the cockpit of a Jaeger. It is on you to cancel the apocalypse when Pacific Rim Pinball comes to Pinball FX on May 16.
