Remedy explains decision to release Alan Wake on Xbox 360 only

VG247: When Microsoft announced at X10 that there would not be a PC version of Alan Wake, it was explained away that the game was best suited for a larger screen – like a television.

According to Oskari Häkkinen, head of franchise at Remedy, playing the game on the telly is more of a preference than anything, as the company has a long history with developing games for PC.

Speaking with VG247 in London this week, Häkkinen told us that the decision to axe the PC version was more about focusing on one platform at a time than anything else.

I've been excited about Alan Wake from day one, I was just afraid that it wasn't going to see the light of day for awhile there. Everything I've seen now from the screenshots to the trailers just seem to reaffirm to me that this one is going to be worth the wait.

Still too bad no PC version. I know plenty of people who have big monitors and surround sound on their PC's. Couldn't they let the consumer decide if they wanted to play it on their PC's or their home theaters rather than taking that choice away?

King_of _the_Casuals5180d ago

I must say that I kinda like exclusives because they generate more buzz. Take BioShock as an example....it was a Godly game when it first released because fanboys worshiped it! Then it went multi-platform and the series has lost it's luster. Same for many other games.

Fanboys may be bad in a general sense...but they do serve a purpose for Develops if they use them properly.

But can't wait for Alan Wake....looks sick!!!!

Good decision

-Microsoft could pay more money than a PC version could make (it's not a multiplayer, stacraft, The Sims, Sim City, Valve or WOW game, so we know that Alan Wake wouldn't sell well on the PC, 80k at best)
-Focus solely on 1 platform (more quality in less time)
-Less money to spend with a PC version
-More chance to make this game a success (some x360 owners could just pirate the PC version because they wouldn't lose anything, but on the x360 they will lose their live accounts, which is a big problem)

I hope this game will be a success, because it seems to be an incredible game!

sniper-squeak5180d ago

What if they DO release it on PC later (just like MS did with "GTA IV: Episodes of Liberty City") to make sure as many people as possible pick this game up on the 360 first... or shift as many new 360's

Hisiru5180d ago (Edited 5180d ago )

It's possible, but I think that Microsoft won't let that happen just like Gears 2, Fable 2, Forza 3, Halo 3, etc. I believe that Microsoft realized that they need some "x360 only" games, games that you can only find on the x360.

Episodes from Liberty City is a different story, it's just a deal for timed exclusivity but Alan Wake is a game published by Microsoft (Microsoft is actually helping the developers with resources).

IdleLeeSiuLung5180d ago

However, for developers (and publishers) it is clear that consoles are considerably more profitable and has less piracy issues.

It makes perfect sense for a small company, with only 50 employees to focus on one version of the game. I thought most respected game studios creating games for a console usually have around 100 employees or more?

Hisiru5180d ago (Edited 5180d ago )

They won't kill this market just because of 1 game, and the Windows 7 broke a record (best selling OS) even without Alan Wake.

Also it's not Microsoft who is killing the market, it's the piracy.

ProjectVulcan5180d ago (Edited 5180d ago )

For me, Remedy really owe something to the Pc gamers who went out and bought their early DOS/Pc games like death rally, and Max payne, and Max payne 2. I dont see how remedy would be here today if it wasnt for PC gamers. Alan wake needs to be ported onto Pc, even if its in 6 months or so like the Max payne to console port.

If you take years and years to create a new game, then you may as well maximise your sales potential. How long can a port really take even with a small group of people used to the platform, when the game is totally completed on console? Surely a few months of porting for maybe another million PC sales makes more sense than immediately starting out on another project which at this rate will end up on the next gen machines anyway wont it? Lets hope that remedy push microsoft for this before being forced into dishing out a bunch of DLC

thehitman5180d ago

Bioshock was developed for the PC and the 360 version was a port as FYI. Wouldve been no difference between bioshock and AW.

IdleLeeSiuLung5180d ago

I didn't mean to say that one game would kill the PC market. It is more of the general receding support for PC games coming out.

If MS doesn't support their own market, who will?

Chubear5180d ago

Wow, now that's got to win "GOTD" nomination for Biggest weak assed excuse of the decade.

JokesOnYou5179d ago

"Speaking with VG247 in London this week, Häkkinen told us that the decision to axe the PC version was more about focusing on one platform at a time than anything else."

-I thought the general thinking has always been that its better for a dev to focus on one platform to ensure they make the best game possible, yet when a dev does it in favor of a 360 game people cry foul.

CernaML5180d ago

Seriously. Many of my friends play their 360 on a 19" TV screen. I usually hook up my PC to my 42" plasma screen. Ironic eh?

PLAYstar5180d ago

90% of the xbots don't even know what is call HD! They are so last-gen with the xbox360 and still stuck on their SDTV.. What would a SDTV big screen for?? Remedy's camp look stupid for coming up with such excuses. INFACT ALL M$ CAMP DEVELOPERS SOUND THAT STUPID!

BeaArthur5180d ago

As long as any great games is on the PS3 or the 360 I'm good. I know I miss out on some good PC games but I am just not prepared to invest the money into PC gaming that it would take to have a top of the line gaming computer.

SKUD5180d ago

How about you keep your opinion to yourself. Trust me I am doing you a favor because your comment just makes you look like an idiot.

Hands Up For Games5180d ago

It sucks for PC Gamers that there version has been canned, however, the most important thing is that the Game gets released! Remedy are a small studio (theres only 50 of them!!) and because of this you cant take forever to make a Game without costs escalating out of control.

Sucks for PC Gamers, but at least Remedy get to make their Game an we get to play it. THAT is the most important aspect in all of this.

dirthurts5180d ago

For people who don't own a 360, the game mid as well not come out at all. Either way they won't get to play it, unless the poney up for a 360. But I don't think any pc gamer will want to do that. It's hard to step back. Not that the 360 isn't fun, I love mine. It's just not where the pc is.

Hands Up For Games5180d ago (Edited 5180d ago )

Thats true dirthurts, but there have been many Games that I have eagerly anticipated in all my years of Gaming only for them to be shelved or scrapped (hello Vapourware).

About a year or 2 ago, there was talk that Alan Wake might be like one of those titles and turn ino vapourware, again its a pity the Game is no longer PC but at least it will be released.

Ive got a PS3 and 360, my PC is for online and poker only, so at least ill get to play it ;)

dirthurts5180d ago

Pitty that game will probably never make it : (
Hey, you can't go wrong with poker. I still kick the mine sweeper sometimes when I'm waiting around. Plants vs Zombies is a good pc game that will run on anything, including netbooks. You should check it out if you like casual stuff too.

dirthurts5180d ago

So they're saying they just can't handle two platforms. That's pretty weak.
I was going to buy this for pc, but now I'll just rent it on the xbox. Shame too. This would have looked great with the power of a pc behind it.

Kind of a goody story...

On a serious note, that is why I try activating gift cards asap. It's happened to me where the store didnt scan it right where the card was unusuable. Happened at Wally World.

gigoran811d ago

wait, that place is real? national lampoon wasn't kidding?

Tacoboto10d ago

I just bought two of the MonsterVerse Godzilla movies on 4K - both had digital copies expiring in 2023. Both were actually expired.

I'd be surprised but it's WB, of course they'd actually expire them

Knightofelemia11d ago

Usually most of those redemption card have an expiry date on them. If they expired all buyer did was buy recycled paper. And some of those codes are country locked to certain countries. I buy a card from the States I can't use it in Canada.

Chocoburger10d ago

Dumb and silly story. She wasted her money for no reason.

Is it really that hard to go to Steam or GOG. She spent $240, when its currently 70% off on GOG, and only costs $4.49.

Gee, I wonder, should I spend $240 on eBay, or $4.49 on GOG? 🙄

Rynxie10d ago

Most likely she wanted to resell a few or most of them. However, it was a too good to be true situation.

Profchaos10d ago

So in short she paid $240.00 assuming usd for a bunch on unactivated game codes.

I still don't understand why I guess cause there's not a physical version and she wanted something for a collection or art project.

Rynxie10d ago

No, most likely to resell. However, she ended up getting screwed.

Asplundh10d ago

This is Alan Wake 1, it had physical copies.

A thermos is upending the Alan Wake community

Remedy has Alan Wake merch on sale, including a pretty blue thermos. Unfortunately, things haven’t gone according to plan, and many players who want a thermos find themselves without one, though it does appear that Remedy is attempting to fix things. Nevertheless, it has resulted in a lot of upset, illustrating just how much the thermos means to Alan Wake fans.
