Mass Effect 2: Mineral Scanning Is Terrible

Joe Juba from Gameinformer writes: "Like most of the gaming world, I'm playing Mass Effect 2 right now, and it is awesome. The story, combat, and structure are all even better than the original which is high praise from me, considering how much I love Mass Effect (it's part of my 1000 Club). So far, there is only one area of the game that falls short and, by "falls short," I mean "totally sucks" the mineral scanning.

Here's how it works: You approach a planet, initiate a scan, and hold the left trigger to start getting readings. Then, you spend the next 20 minutes meticulously (and at a glacial pace) combing the planet's grid, keeping an eye out for spikes in a seismosgraph that indicate the presence of a mineral vein. When you find one, you send out a probe, collecting some of the resource. Repeat that process about 30 times until you've tapped a planet's minerals. Do this until you can't bear it anymore, and then you can return to the main story. Sound fun? No, because it isn't."

Yeah it is the only thing in the game that is really annoying, yet you have to do it to progress in the game. It would have been much better if there were only 5 massive deposits on each planet, whereas you can actually use 30 probes on each planet on both big and small deposits.

Still, it's a lot more realistic than the last game where you just go over the planet, and it does an auto scan.

Marceles5202d ago

Yeah I hate checking a planet and it says "Rich" lol...that means I'm gonna be there for awhile. Especially when I run out of probes while I'm scanning a rich planet in another galaxy without a fuel/probe depot nearby.

Cueil5202d ago

use the hit and release techneque and upgrade your scanners early... you get the 2nd upgrade from the assassin... also stop scanning for a few seconds to let it reset and start scanning again... if you don't come up with anything on half the planet move out... don't waste time scanning planets you'll have plenty of time to do that when you get the final upgrade and move into the last third of the game

Mining is stupid and tedious. A bad part of an otherwise awesome game.

It doesn't even make any sense in the story. Why wouldn't Cerberus just fund mining colonies that supply shepard with all the raw materials he needs for the mission. They obviously have the money.

Instead he has to scan planets for himself. LOL! Like he has nothing important to do.

No you don't, i never did it once in the game (PC Version)

*SPOILERS*

If you don't do it, when you enter the omega 4 relay some of your squad mates die. (My theory) because you didn't purchase the upgrade equipment for your ship. Still haven't played it a second time so i wouldn't know just my theory.

ryuzu5202d ago

This is common technique to make RPGs longer - coolecting herbs, killing rats etc. Makes SP games longer since everyone would trash it if came out at 6 hours long...

r.

DMason5202d ago

Its supposed to be boring. It would be way too easy to upgrade and level your armor and weapons up if it mining was super easy and fun. This is the whole point. If you buy the upgrade for the ship, mining is super simple.

MiloGarret5201d ago

HAHA, what!?!

Scanning is one of my favourite things to do in the game, lol. Feels very satisfying, to me, when I see a "rich" planet littered with flags and the scanner says "DEPLETED".

On the other hand, I'm one of those people who likes cleaning (my house/office, not other peoples crap), so...

JokesOnYou5201d ago

Why would you mine the whole planet, I simply send out 3 or 4 probes on every planet and move on, Rich planets I send out 6 or 8 and move on, it takes me 2 or 3 minutes tops, and I upgrade all the time, easy stuff,, my bud loves mining so he purposely scours every planet. That would bore the hell out of me, thankfully ME2 lets you choose how to play the mining game since its not neccessary to deplete every planet...I haven't depleted one, and I have all the nice upgrades, so I don't really understand this complaint.

If the scanner was bigger it might not be so bad, but it is really boring the way it is now

Julie5202d ago (Edited 5202d ago )

bigger or a bit faster , i already finished the game and i have every upgrade (probes/fuel/scan speed), and is still way too slow (the planet scan i mean), i spent hours scanning planets D: i love the game is awesome the characters are awesomely deep but i rather have the Mako back than to spend hours with this slowpoke scan :3

Btw in a new game+ my upgrades do carry on , or i must scan all those planets again? o_O

Cueil5202d ago

pull and release your trigger... you can cover a great deal of distance by not holding down on it... also scanning every inch is retarded... why would you waste your time doing that? There are tons of planets and it doesn't take combing through every planet to get all the upgrades

Jampy1515202d ago

when you star a new game+ they give 50000 of each resource and a new power

Julie5202d ago (Edited 5202d ago )

50k is too few , the doctor "thingy" (for not to spoil) is 50k platinum alone :3 Btw i am not complaining (i even got the "No One Left Behind" achievement :)) i love the game too bad all my fishies died i forgot to feed them! D:

And i really liked the Mako :p

Ye it's not so great. But then you find a big ass spike and you're like YES!... and then for the next 20 min you're bored out of your skull. Then you find another big spike... and repeat

Cueil5202d ago

personally I'm a bit addicted to it... the only part I hated was getting the med bay... eezo is hard to find to untill you get your final upgrade on the scanner

CobraKai5201d ago

Finding that huge spike is oddly satisfying, especially when it's a combination of multiple minerals.

005202d ago (Edited 5202d ago )

At least it's better than driving the mako around finding the minerals, but I wish it was optional and didn't have such a big role.

DustMan23d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
