Bungie: Halo: Reach for Us Is Not Halo 4

Bungie has reaffirmed Halo: Reach as a standalone entry for the series, stating that both spiritually and in terms of content, "Halo: Reach for us is not Halo 4."

"It's not a continuation of the Master Chief story, nor is it the start of a new trilogy. For us, it's a completely standalone game," says executive producer Joseph Tung.

I thought of it as Halo 4 simply because of the hype and amount of work they are putting into Reach.

No doubt Reach is going to be the biggest Bungie project since Halo 3. As for Halo 4, I suppose it will make a good alternative. Considering the fact that Reach will "upset hardcore fans" as Bungie said it, it is interesting to see how Bungie is alternating between different styles.

Regardless, the Halo universe is very interesting and very impressionable. Maybe one day Bungie can do something different (and multiplatform) but Halo is pretty much a household name this generation and the game is easily iconic so no doubt that it's going to go on for a long, long time.

?

edit:thank you.

deadreckoning6665201d ago (Edited 5201d ago )

WOW, so technically that means that there can be another Halo since Reach is a new franchise in itself. Same that thing that IW wanted ta do by not including Call of Duty in the title of Modern Warfare 2.

@Dance- Please no. I hope Reach exceeds Modern Warfare 2 to the point that IW is forced to revamp their franchise considerably. Modern Warfare 2 is STILL a campfest IMO.

edhe5201d ago

Anyone thinking that it was Halo4 obviously missed the end of Halo3 legendary.

Bungie have a massive universe to play with in the Halo universe, the Chief's story is the endpoint for the covenant conflict, Reach is nearer the start. There are plenty of stories that can happen in the covenant war [just look at the short stories coming out on the dvd/waypoint] not to mention the colonial wars pre-covenant which the spartan-IIs were made for in the first place - and then there's the forerunner's stories, nevermind the stories that could take place after the Chief in the new glactic order with the prophets defeated, Brutes shamed and the elites set free.

Compare this to gears of war for instance, which has a backstory with the pendulum wars, the renaissance before that etc - but it was never really explained what all of these things really meant, or whether or not Sera is their origin planet or if the Human race in Gears is
space-capable but bound to Sera due to the wars.

The Halo universe has been fleshed out as much as it really needs to be to become close to the star wars universe for having extra fiction able to be written in, take KOTOR, Jedi Knight etc etc. I believe Mass Effect's universe is at least as vibrant as those other two. It's easily imaginable to see many different timelines and/or gametypes in that universe - i'd love the people that made freespace or freelancer to get their hands on the ME IP for a trilogy of their own.

Gotta love serious game universes :)

cervantes995201d ago

I agree with you in regards to the Mass Effect Universe being incorporated into a Freespace type of game. That could be EPIC with a great back story.

Have a bubble for your foresight.

:)

Pre-emptive damage control.

markbob5201d ago (Edited 5201d ago )

do you really need to actually read that article. They are talking about hardcore fans that read the "source material."

This is because Bungie is not going to completely follow the "canon" set out in the book "Fall of Reach."

I am interested in what Bungie may create next outside of the Halo universe

webeblazing5201d ago

of course its not they said it wasnt and im glad this is bungie last halo and that they telling how it started b4 they hand the series over cause i think the can do more and i think they got a lot of ideas that wouldnt fit with halo ( i know they gotta be tried of making halo games) game play

Christopher5201d ago

Perhaps not due to the storyline, but I'm hoping that the gameplay really makes it a completely different Halo game rather than just Halo 4 or Halo 3: ODST 2.

DTClown5201d ago

that Halo 4 has been in production for over 2 years now at GearBox. Halo Reach is not Halo 4. Halo 4 will be Halo 4. Someone go put Randy on the spot and watch him squirm. =)X

Chubear5201d ago

they want to go out in a bang. They've had to play ball w/ MS and throw forth a very kiddy experience time after time while they see other developers pushing new stuff I'm sure they wanted done in halo.

This halo is the one game I think they feel they can just go as they have always wanted to do before it goes solely into MS's new Halo development studio.

I found this statement from a Bungie developer - "..Of immediate note will be a darker, more gritty world where enemies are scary rather than animated children's toys." to be very telling indeed.

Finally, Halo steps into Big Boy territory.

edhe5201d ago

Why thank you!

ME's rich universe wets my pants.

Government Cheese5201d ago

I still hope master chief makes at least an appearance.. maybe at least playing as him in the final level or something, that would be sick

Convas5201d ago

Did Chubear just make a comment that made sense and showed cohesive thought processes? How could this be?! What's the hell is going on here?!??!?! APOCALYPSE NOW!!!! Proves that even a Troll can make sense when He wants to.

OT: Ermmmm, Halo 4, or it's equivalent is currently under development by 343 Industries for release on the Next Xbox Console (Launch Title FTW). Anyone who thought Reach is Halo 4 spiritually (or story-wise for my lesser brained associates) has clearly been living under a rock.

milkage confirmed.

"Of immediate note will be a darker, more gritty world where enemies are scary rather than animated children's toys."
"animated children's toys"

You mean...you mean...power rangers?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Dance5201d ago

Halo Reach is going to be this year's Modern Warfare 2

-Alpha5201d ago

And what makes you think that?

Reach already has a beta which, for the multiplayer, already makes it so much more better than MW2.

As for the SP, I trust Bungie more than I do with IW.

The fact that it's exclusive also makes me think otherwise.

Solidus187-SCMilk5201d ago (Edited 5201d ago )

but im sure REACH will be of better quality and more substance.

It wont be all kill streaks and Flashy Icons. Reach online will take some skill and teamwork. Ohh and will have less glitches and FAR better support.

Im sure it will have great co-op features and Im wondering if it will still offer 4 player splitscreen online matchmaking like halo 2,3. etc.

Also the SP will be more than 5 hrs long.

GeoramA5201d ago

I wonder if will even be close to HD this time...doubt it.

Karooo5201d ago

come on bungie take 3 DVDS if you want but make it equal to PS3 standards.

I know there is another halo coming in 2011 and another one when xbox 720 launches.

But atleast give the bots a great halo game they are waiting since 2009 for games.

nefertis5201d ago

halo 1 and 2 was awesome but after that the franchise seem stale to me. Playb3yond.

How'd fallout not make the list. Atleast over cyberpunk, tales , and halo. Fallout been around since what 96 98 and has 5 6 games into it. It's full of lore when you play it. I'd even add star ocean to a point.

robtion475d ago

Agree Fallout should be on there.

MadLad475d ago

And somehow Planescape Torment doesn't even make the list.

Crows90475d ago

Hollow knight surpasses these.

shinoff2183475d ago

In lore? I must be missing something

Crows90475d ago (Edited 475d ago )

Yes in lore. Easily missed... absolutely. Never played a game that had me loving the world and lore behind it as much as that one. Most of course wouldn't be able to experience it since it is a more difficult game.

DarXyde475d ago

I can't speak for all titles on this list, but by the time you get to Dark Souls III, the lore is a bloody tapestry of intricacy

Crows90474d ago

Played them all. Im not saying the games on the list dont have good lore...I just think hollow knight had more lore that is hidden but present and more easily explored and accessed. The souls games have tremendous lore but theyre mostly hidden and stay that way unless you look for it and research it. The lore is not very accessible.

DarXyde474d ago

Crows90,

I think that's a somewhat fair assessment. For me, the Souls games are less upfront about the lore, but it does invite your fascination through NPCs, items, locations, bosses, etc. There's this kind of natural progression where the picture becomes just clear enough by doing the essential tasks, but it really makes you want to explore every inch of the world.

TheColbertinator474d ago

Suikoden and Legend of Heroes also have massive lore setups.

agent13474d ago

narration is more important than lore i'd rather watch the story and characters in a more cinematic way instead of searching for notes and stuff that's why i love sony exclusive games like uncharted and gow and hate from software games

shinoff2183474d ago

The article was top ten lore in video games. I think they did a bad job picking games out. I know what you mean though. I just like a variety of games and genres.

Awesome news - so can we look forward to playing Halo: Infinite with no online issues circa 2033?

just_looken560d ago

"You can download the improved Reach AI mod at Mod DB" This was a mod 343 did nothing so the online will be fixed in our dreams.

SullysCigar559d ago

Par for the course with 343.

Profchaos559d ago

They did say they had a 10 year plan for infinite we just all assumed it would be DLC could of been a 10 year netcode rollout.

But seriously this is a mod the community won't be able to modify infinite in the same way

Cikatriz_ESP560d ago

Combat Evolved was the best campaign, and it's not even close.

just_looken560d ago

You should have tried this version of reach when it first came out remastered for a year there was no sound because 343 could not locate the sound files.

It was a special challenge.

badz149559d ago

more like the bunch at 343i are simply mentally challenged

ACEMANWISE560d ago

Well I guess 12 years is faster than most fixes. I guess this is a cheap way to "remaster" something nowadays.....by just fixing something that used to always be broken.

zidane1341559d ago

Did you even read the article? This is a mod to improve AI from back almost 2 gens ago. Nobody is claiming this is remastering anything. Yeesh.

Crows90559d ago

Halo is dead. Microsoft has other shooter franchises it cares more about now. 343 are no longer Xbox golden studio. They are likely to shift things around or even close it all together and give the IP to someone else.

343i decided to pummel the IP into the ground...and when they see it didn't quite look like Glenn's face they decided to just keep on pummeling. Not sure if Glenn is the IP or the fanbase in this case though.

Profchaos559d ago

343 were never the golden studio they were a hastily thrown together b team when bungie said we want to do something else cya

Crows90559d ago

Well ...I didn't want to say it but I agree. Makes you wonder why Microsoft gave them the IP and didn't keep Bungie or any of the talent they acquired from any studio.

CobraKai559d ago

“ Halo Infinite, Halo 3, or Halo: Combat Evolved. It’s hard to say which of the sci-fi FPS games offers the best experience all round.”
He lost me with Halo Infinite.
