Halo: Reach - Gutting The Engine

EDGE:

"Halo: Reach will run on what Bungie says is a completely 'gutted' version of the Halo 3 engine. No area of its working has been left untweaked: "We are definitely bending the Xbox as far as it'll bend," the developer claims. And this is what is allowing Reach to achieve its larger levels, greater detail and more epic battles.

Creative director Marcus Lehto, executive producer Joseph Tung and community director Brian Jarrard tell us how they've built on the technology which powered Halo 3, the challenges they've faced in refining the classic Halo sandbox, and Halo's place in a post-Modern Warfare world.

For our full account of Bungie's last Halo, pick up the magazine, out on UK news stands now, and soon to hit those in the US."

I'd like to see some gameplay footage already.

BeaArthur5208d ago

Same here. I would like to see multiplayer gameplay but any gameplay would work at this point.

LazyRobot5208d ago

When some of the bigger games start coming out this year I am sure we will see a 'flood' of them coming in

Saaking5208d ago

So far it looks great and from what I've heard it's really early footage (am I correct?) If that's true, then I'm really glad they decided to make a whole new engine. It'll really show in the final released game.

StanLee5207d ago

I thought they built and entirely new engine from the ground up? They're still using the same engine. It doesn't matter how much it's gutted, they will only get so much out of it!

Rush-Sykes5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

There you have it people StanLee has spoken, Bungie got it wrong and there game is limited because they used some raw data from the old engine.

Seriously dude ever though maybe Bungie has a better idea how to develop games then yourself? I mean they don't have a bad track record. You will only get so much out of the 360 anyway due to hardware limitations.

Do you think when EPIC made the Unreal engine they didn't keep some choice data that they thought relevant from the old engine in it? Getting good graphics is all about pushing that hardware that little bit extra and polishing what you have.

The Engine age ain't all that important I mean look at Left 4 Dead 2 any idea how old the source engine is? But with that little bit of polish you and pushing that hardware the extra mile you get a great looking game.

Raf1k15207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

Let's hope they get as much out of it as possible.

Is Bungie owned by MS? Since it's their last Halo game I'd love for them to create a sequal to Oni and make it multiplat.

Edit: @Rush-Sykes, You make a good point as Source is built on the Quake engine.

kalebgray925207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

but then again its only 70% done... killzone 2 changed so much in its last 2 months of development hopefully e3 we see the full potential of halo reach... graphics wise

edit: and plz enough of the graphics dont matter.... they do... they aren't everything but they matter a lot at least 40% of the game's greatness comes from graphics then 40% gameplay and 20%online experience/ story for fps's.... your online can't be great with weak graphics/gameplay so no online is not everything

D4RkNIKON5207d ago

Overhaul of the Halo3 engine.. Graphics aren't everything.. unless we are comparing multiplats am I right? Don't expect this to look anything close to the level KZ2's graphics were, at close to a 2 year release difference too. I can't wait to see some KZ3 footage, heads will roll.

niceguywii605207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

KZ3 will be forced to be a corridor shooter with basic level design if its going to up KZ2 or better put, KZ3 will be just like KZ2. KZ3 won't have large scale battles with 3 story tall machines running around with ground and air vehicles all fighting at once with four player co-op in mini open world environments. Funny guy. I think this is where haters lose credibility trying to compare a Corridor FPSs with Action FPSs

BeaArthur5208d ago

Personally I am hoping for improved AI.

Karooo5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

this and alan wake will be the 2 gems for 360 in 2010.

FiftyFourPointTwo5207d ago

Yep, it sure does seem it'll be the best Halo game, but will still be nowhere near KZ2's level of absolute epicness.

-MD-5207d ago

Stop using Killzone 2 as an example of a good game, it was a terrible awful game with too much motion blur, annoying controls and bad AI. Uncharted 2 is a much better example of what a 'good' game is.

dustgavin5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

You shouldn't be talking about graphics when Halo runs at a 640p resolution with horrible AI.

"Halo: Reach will run on what Bungie says is a completely 'gutted' version of the Halo 3 engine. No area of its working has been left untweaked: "We are definitely bending the Xbots as far as they will bend,"

Fixed. :)

-MD-5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

It's probably a good thing that I didn't mention graphics at all in my entire post then.

Your reading comprehension abilities are exceeding your parents expectations.

dustgavin5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

So, where do you think motion blur fits in with gaming then? The controls? The audio? It is an effect that is meant to enhance the graphical appearance of the game.

No wonder your mother is so ashamed of you....she has been crying on my shoulder about your ignorance all day.

Stay in school, baby bot.

There's the mom comeback.

There is the generic reply after having no comeback.

DARK WITNESS5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

well, with all the great games to play, before you know it the beta will be hear.

I have am really honest, I have double feelings about this.
One of the things that got me really excited about Reach was the fact they were using a New engine - and when they said new, i thought they meant "NEW". If i go by what i just read, it sounds like it's not the case. Ok sure they have changed/ upgraded/ tweaked... everything etc, but it still does not come across the same.

I remember similar things being said about halo 3. when the first vids showed up about halo 3 they talked about it using a new engine. Then it turned out it was a heavily modified halo 2 engine.

I suppose it depends just how far they have gone. I suppose it's just a play of words, but in the end... I like the idea more of it being a "new " engine, Not Halo 3's engine gutted and rebuilt etc.

either way, what really has me hyped is the sound of the campaign in Reach. It sounds like a real return to the awesomeness of halo CE which i have been waiting for all these years. Halo 2 and 3 were great for their online stuff, but i didn't play the campaign in either of those games half as much as i did Halo CE. I put more hours into halo CE then i have most rpgs.

interesting interview. I agree with them about the AI, I think people really underrate some of the things the AI does in the campaign specially from Halo CE. till this day I still think it holds its own against some of this gens games. people have this thing about halo being all about MP, which it is in some ways, but then they miss all the little awesome things that go on in the sp.

anyway, can't wait, bring it on !

Raf1k15207d ago

You're right but I think everyone will welcome the much improved visuals in Reach.

Ghostsmoker5207d ago

and it already looks really good. There is a lot of time to improve the graphics again.

DARK WITNESS5207d ago

@ Ghostsmoker

I agree, and i am not saying the game looks bad now or is going to end up looking bad, when it comes to a games engine, it does more then just graphics. I wanted to see other changes, maybe to stuff like Physics, lighting, AI etc.

one thing i didn't like in halo 2 and 3 for example was the physics of the warthog and other vehicles. to me they just didn't feel as weighty enough and didn't react as well as they did in halo CE, something I was interested to see if or how they would change.

indeed lets wait and see.

How'd fallout not make the list. Atleast over cyberpunk, tales , and halo. Fallout been around since what 96 98 and has 5 6 games into it. It's full of lore when you play it. I'd even add star ocean to a point.

robtion481d ago

Agree Fallout should be on there.

MadLad481d ago

And somehow Planescape Torment doesn't even make the list.

Crows90481d ago

Hollow knight surpasses these.

shinoff2183481d ago

In lore? I must be missing something

Crows90481d ago (Edited 481d ago )

Yes in lore. Easily missed... absolutely. Never played a game that had me loving the world and lore behind it as much as that one. Most of course wouldn't be able to experience it since it is a more difficult game.

DarXyde481d ago

I can't speak for all titles on this list, but by the time you get to Dark Souls III, the lore is a bloody tapestry of intricacy

Crows90480d ago

Played them all. Im not saying the games on the list dont have good lore...I just think hollow knight had more lore that is hidden but present and more easily explored and accessed. The souls games have tremendous lore but theyre mostly hidden and stay that way unless you look for it and research it. The lore is not very accessible.

DarXyde480d ago

Crows90,

I think that's a somewhat fair assessment. For me, the Souls games are less upfront about the lore, but it does invite your fascination through NPCs, items, locations, bosses, etc. There's this kind of natural progression where the picture becomes just clear enough by doing the essential tasks, but it really makes you want to explore every inch of the world.

TheColbertinator481d ago

Suikoden and Legend of Heroes also have massive lore setups.

agent13481d ago

narration is more important than lore i'd rather watch the story and characters in a more cinematic way instead of searching for notes and stuff that's why i love sony exclusive games like uncharted and gow and hate from software games

shinoff2183480d ago

The article was top ten lore in video games. I think they did a bad job picking games out. I know what you mean though. I just like a variety of games and genres.

Awesome news - so can we look forward to playing Halo: Infinite with no online issues circa 2033?

just_looken566d ago

"You can download the improved Reach AI mod at Mod DB" This was a mod 343 did nothing so the online will be fixed in our dreams.

SullysCigar566d ago

Par for the course with 343.

Profchaos565d ago

They did say they had a 10 year plan for infinite we just all assumed it would be DLC could of been a 10 year netcode rollout.

But seriously this is a mod the community won't be able to modify infinite in the same way

Cikatriz_ESP566d ago

Combat Evolved was the best campaign, and it's not even close.

just_looken566d ago

You should have tried this version of reach when it first came out remastered for a year there was no sound because 343 could not locate the sound files.

It was a special challenge.

badz149566d ago

more like the bunch at 343i are simply mentally challenged

ACEMANWISE566d ago

Well I guess 12 years is faster than most fixes. I guess this is a cheap way to "remaster" something nowadays.....by just fixing something that used to always be broken.

zidane1341566d ago

Did you even read the article? This is a mod to improve AI from back almost 2 gens ago. Nobody is claiming this is remastering anything. Yeesh.

Crows90565d ago

Halo is dead. Microsoft has other shooter franchises it cares more about now. 343 are no longer Xbox golden studio. They are likely to shift things around or even close it all together and give the IP to someone else.

343i decided to pummel the IP into the ground...and when they see it didn't quite look like Glenn's face they decided to just keep on pummeling. Not sure if Glenn is the IP or the fanbase in this case though.

Profchaos565d ago

343 were never the golden studio they were a hastily thrown together b team when bungie said we want to do something else cya

Crows90565d ago

Well ...I didn't want to say it but I agree. Makes you wonder why Microsoft gave them the IP and didn't keep Bungie or any of the talent they acquired from any studio.

CobraKai565d ago

“ Halo Infinite, Halo 3, or Halo: Combat Evolved. It’s hard to say which of the sci-fi FPS games offers the best experience all round.”
He lost me with Halo Infinite.
